neat! 3 phase power, explains why some of the lights went out. Same thing happened at a mall I used to work at,store next door had about 1/3 of its lights out, seemingly at random. no arcs though!

Not necessarily huge. Few ten kilovolts equipment which takes up very little space (youknow, the pole transformers and stuff) can still do tremendous arcs when shorted phase to phase. Im pretty sure this was the case.
