This song definiterly contains a message. I totally agree with barbarac102. This song represents freedom from being off drugs or not using them to begin with. What Curtis is saying is REAL.
There have been many poets who have done their best to tell it like it is: Curtis Mayfiled, Bobby Womack, James Brown, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Gil-Scott Heron and many others. When will the people pay attention to the world around them and learn The Man need them on the highly dangerous dope to make a living. Check out the words to "Across 110th Street".
"it's a terrible thing inside, when your natural high has died"...DAMN!...now that's real talk...a poet and prophet that was way ahead of his time...i miss u much Mayfield!
An important reference Curtis makes is to the "man" who is not Priest, who wants to quit "the life". The man was actually high level NYC narcotics officers who were stepping on the French Connection seizure. When the Golden Triangle stuff came into Harlem via Bumpy Johnson's successor, there were thousands of OD because the Asian dope was 20 x more potent. But the man could just as well be the CIA today.
I heard this song from Snoop Dogg's before this version but I think the original is greater. Very nice lyric is my inspiration. The man can't put no thing on me!
@KIDAmnesiacBends yeah and that powder is cut with kerosene, baby laxatives, diet pills, baking soda, and whatever the fuck else a random fuckhead wants to put in it to make a dishonest dollar.
It's been a long time since I heard this song. As I listen to the words, I am realizing how much Mr. Mayfield infulenced my thinking and as a result my life. Like bluekrypton I saw so many people and families go down because of durgs and or alcohol. I love my natural high. I love being able to live thorugh the hard times without tthe use of drugs or liquid courage.
Thank you for posting this wonderful reminder of where a great many of us came from.

@steelcross101 You know I think da word Cool need to be rexamined. Our youth r workin off a very negative energy rite now.1 thing is dat they have no shame. Some how we need to hit the youth in da heart. They need to feel emotional pain to da extreme.Where they wud have no choice but to submitt to wat think is GOD and acknowledge that they do need the guidance of the Elders. They need to be slowed down long enuff 4 sum kinda change to set in.Thats my theory on it.
It's a bit jumbled and filled with a lot of n-words but your message is right on. People are tripping off of these drugs and throwing their lives away. Keep it to the reefer, youngsters! And even then keep it cool and don't go overboard!
the first time i saw this movie i was 23 in 1972 a father of 2 kids at the time and i was going thru the same shit with my wife the fucking junkie. she sold everyting i ever work hard for and i was angry for a long time because her life was in the hand of the pusherman and it was killin me. and when i saw this movie he was talking to my wife. she died in 1976 at the age of 30 frum a drug overdose. i miss her and i love her very much but when i see my daughter i see my wife the same woman
@MD64577 Thankyou for the share brother....I've got that mess myself. My heart feels You, and if nothing else.....At least You saying your word, Me hearing it....Two...means were not alone! 1LOVE! GOD Bless!
I grew up in the late 60s and early 70s. Turned 18 in '73. Curtis Mayfield was one of my musical and political heroes at that time, he always sang and spoke the truth. I will miss him always. Stop hating and start living!
Seriously one of his best tunes. Get goosebumps listening to this again. I was lucky my brothers had this album so grew up listening to this. Amazing amazing jam.
Thank you for sharing, FunkFeverClub. Curtis Mayfield was a poet whose message against self-destruction helped counter the increased use of drugs in America at the end of the Vietnam War. As you know, this and other songs of his were not solely entertainment, but cries out to people to be aware of "the game" and to stay alive. So many did not listen then, and sadly, so many are not listening now. It's sad that, even generations later, how some people just refuse to get the message.
Compliments to Curtis who inspired me with his heartfelt lyric. Ever since i heard is sweet sounding soulful singing voice. There's a magical sensation i experience while listening. Bless you Curtis you live in my heart forever
For me this is easily one of the greatest songs of the 20th century. The melody, the timely lyrics, the sweet, pure vocals, the tightness (and looseness) of the musicians playing in harmony, the brilliance of the arragement and masterful production by Curtis Mayfield. He was and is one of America's greatest gifts to music. An artist for whom the word 'genius' is an understatement.
Beautiful lyrics....perfect for the state of affairs our laughable "democratic government" has put us in: a pit of deception and lies. Creating chaos to incite controversy....divert our attention away from the truth, i.e.: 911 and Iraq war......the United States Government is complicit in the senseless murders of 3000 people in the WTC....murderers.....911 was an inside job!
@kimbyfaires Idiot... I came here to enjoy great 70's music.. and i got a foolish malcontened 911 statement like that! Ya I guess the Mumbai attacks, USS Cole and African embasseys were "inside jobs" too! oh and man never landed on the moon... pffffft
Curtis Mayfield no doubt was one of the best song writers in America up until his untimely death. His music gave people hope direction and inspiration during the civil rights era, songs like "Moving on Up" or "We're a Winner" spoke volumes at that time and still does so today. My brothers please take time and listen to Curtis's messages and lessons -- We need to pay heed before we leave
@RunLikeHellIV ppl say that about pac..but i can show you many lines where pac talking about guns..and shooting blacks. i mean..come on..have you ever listened to 2pac?
@RunLikeHellIV you never listened to a lot of tupac i take it - i have every single song he released, and like it or not he DID rap bout shooting people
@mcRioRemedy The impression I got from him is that his later albums were more about helping the world. I'll admit I'm not the biggest Tupac fan. I do know of some of his more aggreesive songs though. I like to ignore them :P
@RunLikeHellIV he was a bit of an enigma, just when ye thought, o.k., hes getting sensible with his raps, he drops anutha gangsta track. but i think its his gemini in him, he had to please everybody, the good and the bad, the men and the female, the black and the white. his positive messages are some of the best messages i have ever heard in my life. in fact so much so i look up to him as a role model. but i admit i like his gangtsa rhymes too. i can picture every word like a good film. R.I.P.
@mcRioRemedy Speaking of 2pac, one day I had watched a documentary about 2pac right after watching a documentary about John Lennon and I said to myself, "Wow, these 2 guys are exactly the same."
Neither were physically imposing men, but feared no one. They had a massive following bc of their charisma. Both preached peace, but also had an anger toward the world. They were both passionate about everything they did and you could hear it in their words. Both were often hypocritical.
My first time hearing this song and I must say I love it. The song the bunny hop, samples this song, I new it sampled a song, but I never knew what song until now. You just gotta love Mr. Mayfeild!
@BlaqueReign25 my mom just played this for me and i started singing the bunny hop lyrics and i told her they sampled it and she said see all this new music comes from old school its so crazy
@nblpresident It is crazy, my mom has done that to me before she was playing Donnie Hathaway The Ghetto and I started singing Too Short's version. A lot of these artist are barrowing from the old school, sometimes it turns out good and sometimes not so good. In this case I like the Bunny Hop and this song. I love doing the dance to it.
Real shit,1000% pure, when will we learn people,i love this real shit curtis mayfield was giving to the people back then tho it didnt work, only if they woulda listened carefully
@tuftybox1821 The horn is ill too it remind me of the costume party in spider man and his amazing friends when everyone was dressed mostly in spider man and green goblin suits
Growin up during this time I saw many go down. I never tried the stuff and watching I knew I did not want somethin that would make me lose myself and sell my body, mind and soul. Curtis told the truth.
This is a very beautiful song I loved as a young teen and I so do too now. If you want to hear another smooth song by this artist listen to You're so good to me.
This song is like a declaration of freedom from someone who was once a slave to drugs and now is clean and sober. we need more songs like this one in our current pop culture (are you listening Lindsay & Paris?).
