Odd, except for a few pillow words I don't speak German but I find the German version of this song more compelling than the English version.Maybe it's just because Nena becomes even more exotic and beautiful in an unknown tongue and when she breaks the fourth wall seems to look right inside a man.

My opinion is, that she is talking about war-99 luftballons were the planes that came from horizon to bomb Germany. Civilians saw in them hope and end of the war-thats why they are in the shape of ballons.
