Well, you can't expect the director to follow Meyer's book exactly. She's not stupid for letting the director make some alterations so the movie can be better. I think the illusions are a great idea- it'll help the audience understand exactly what Bella is going through.

I don't think its a bad thing that their filming it as Bella having visions of him. It's not actually she see's him but it's a form to show when she's hearing him. Think about it, what gives more of an emotional effect, just hearing the voice over or actually hearing the voice over and seeing him there? Chris W. explained it better. "She doesn't see him, where we chose to make it more visual for the audience to bring the concept to light that she's hearing his voice".
