I first heard this tune played on the pipes by two pipers of the Scots Guards, at the wedding of Angus Ogilvy to Princess Alexandra, televised on the BBC in the 60's, which I recorded. I have played the tune myself ever since; but now, thanks to your clip, have learned more about the tune, and I shall play it with even more fervour than ever I did before. Thank you.
The Earl of Argyll burn the Earl of Airlie's house in the summer of 1640. Prince Charlie's rebellion was in 1745. So why does the song connect the two?
The earlier versions of the song relate to Airlie being a supporter of Charles 1st.
The Earl of Airlie of 1745 was a jacobite and as folk songs go they change over the years with a wee bit added here and there. So the association with Bonnie Prince Charlie would have come from that.
Nice tune though made the hairs on my neck stand up first time i heard it
@glasgow1234 A year after Airlie's house was burnt down by the 8th Earl of Arygll (ie 1641), Charles I elevated Argyll (not Airlie) to marquess. "Charlie" was clearly on Argyll's side.
Besides, the singer talks about drawing swords for "prince" not "king" Charlie, inferring some form of revenge for this act of barbarism. Clearly the lyrics in this song confuse historical facts (and Charlies) to support Brit-bashing. Emotion over fact.
Great tune though, I love playing it on the bagpipes.

you hear so often of patriotic men, loyal men, strong men...not so often of women who have withstood just as much as, if not more than, their men.
"I'll not come down, nor kiss you, she said,
Though you won't leave a standing stone at Airlie"
Lady Airlie, weep not for your fallen lord, nor for your fatherless sons.
They all should be proud of such a noble heart in their presence.

@Bonjordie I guess folk songs don't need to be factually correct.
You are right, this is a great tune. I love playing it on my pipes.

@UrukEngineer The "Charlie" mentioned in this ballad is King Charles I, not Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Bonnie bonnie day to you too! As Alice said:
"...if I don't make haste, I shall have to go back through the looking-glass...back into the old room-and there'd be an end of all my adventures!"
Sending my 'curiouser & curiouser' happy thoughts through the looking-glass.
