  • This is why I hate refs. They make stupid calls like that. -__-

  • and the puck hit him before he dropped the stick , anyone who thinks otherwise is by far the biggest moron on the fuckin planet

  • he didnt throw it, he dropped it to get his blocker up. B.S. call

  • just saw this and like he didnt throw his stick he put his blocker towards the puck...his stick didnt even move towards the puck

  • just a quick question... where would hockey be without referees?

  • Raycroft sucks. Smith is the best.

  • raycrap in shock!

  • WHAT??? That stick did not even touch Hejduk. I'm a big Hejduk fan but I still think this rule is stupid. Mike Smith saved that with his bare fist...kung fu hockey!

  • @Runaholism it wasnt about the stick touching him, it was a rule to prevent goalies from laying down thier stick to block to puck, and is called entirely by the reffs perception and cannot be argued. so his call is final

  • Go Raycroft!

Either way the refs are braindead

  • I'm not a fan of either team but that really is a bullshit call. Smith goes for the pokecheck and misses and then drops his stick while trying to react to make a blocker save. I don't know how you can call that a thrown stick when the stick didn't even leave his hand until after the save was made.

  • @PKO17 watch the vid again, you can see the stick is dropped and the puck deflects off of the stick up into the blocker. That is what the ref saw and why he made the call, which is the correct one.

  • @wyckydsceptre2099 OK, I can agree that the stick had already left his hand by the time he made the save. I don't know the exact wording of the rules but the referees should understand that the spirit of the rule is to prevent dangerous and/or non-hockey plays. Yes, the stick left his hand, and yes, the puck did hit the stick while it was out of his hand. But that was obviously not an intentional throw (why would he throw his stick at a puck that he can reach with his hand?).

  • @PKO17 Oh, I totally agree with you but the ref is obligated to make the call that way. The reasoning is to prevent goalies from dropping their sticks in order to take away the bottom part of the ice. If you allow it, then the ref has to judge intent which is impossible.

  • @wyckydsceptre2099 yeah if you are high, it was all blocker no stick, and then he dropped the stick.

  • @carsarelife602 pause it at :54 seconds and tell me that puck isn't hitting a dropped stick. Be real, no bullshit tampa bias

  • @PKO17 exactly!!! and here's something that bugs me about this call , why , seriously WHY would it be an automatic goal ? that's fuckin rediculous , just have the player take another shot.. dont GIVE HIM a goal

  • Ha you are an idiot. He did throw his stick. I don't even really like the Avs per say. You're just a blind idiot.

  • hedjuk comes thru again

  • Go Av's, And that puck did deflect slightly off of the goalie's stick just enough to tip it up to his blocker and make the save otherwise it would have slid right under his pad, I'm not saying he threw his stick at the puck but when the stick dropped it knocked the puck up off the ice and off of Smith's blocker.

  • What a goal go Avs

  • whatever...even it if wasn't a goal Avs still would've won

  • Total bs. He was trying to move his stick to block the shot but accidentely dropped it. I'm not a lightning fan though i'm just saying that that goal was not a goal. lol at raycroft's batting the puck after the shootout save

  • lololol fuck the lightning.

  • haha i remember watching this game (avs fan) it was definitely a bad call at the worst time for the lightning .....oh well go avs lol

  • Go Avs, Lightning got pwned

  • bull fucking shit

  • shudent be a goal. did the puck go in the net? no, so no goal

  • hahahahaha

  • Its a hockey game, not a big deal

  • i was at this game- it was so unfair!

  • Freeze at 0:42. You can clearly see the shaft of the stick as left Smith's hand while the puck is still on Hejduk's stick.

  • If it wasn't a shootout that would be a penalty shot

  • All I can say is, if you guys think he didn't lose his stick until he hit the ice, you have horrible monitors and eyes.

See at 0:39 and 0:50 how he re-grips his stick at the very butt end. Then at 0:54, see how the end of the stick is not even close to his hand anymore. The stick is already out, and the puck is just leaving Hejduk's stick . At 0:54-0:55, if you watch carefully, you can even SEE the puck hit the flying stick and RICOCHET OFF THE STICK and THEN into Smith's blocker arm.

  • are you a goalie?...do you understand how you hold the stick?...now do you understand how you pokecheck?...put two and two together...everything you described from 39 to 50 is what a goalie has to do everytime he pokecheckes...sometimes, especially when coming across your body while simultaniously dropping to butterfly, you lose your stick...it was a shit call

  • @xRIKTERx I myself am a goalie and i totally agree with you, i have purposely dropped my stick on breakaways to make blocker saves, if the stick is not thrown at a player it shouldnt be a called a thrown stick.

  • dude STFU

  • Bullshit call.

  • that wasnt intentional he was tryin to swing his arms to get momentum to slide across and make a great save :) im sayin this and im a flames fan well obv ^^ i should hate TB but that was no intentional

  • he threw his arm out not his stick his blocker even made the save then when his arm hit the ground the stick flew out he never threw the stick just his arm

  • how do we cheat

we play fair we get called on everything none of the other teams we play do though

  • Throwing the stick is illegal... OK. But why can't goalies throw their stick if they like - as long as it isn't dangerous, i.e. straight at another player. In that situation, it wasn't dangerous, so why can't he do it if it stops a goal?

  • Go Avs!!!

    Lightning Suck!!!

  • This is great, because your own video PROVES the call is the RIGHT CALL, if you have a large high quality computer screen. In HD mode, a pause at 0:53 shows the stick OUT of his hand. Watching normal speed at 0:54 shows the puck ricochets off the flying stick, and THEN into the blocker.

And even if the puck hadn't hit the flying stick, the goalie still violated the rule. The stick didn't fall down, it flew outwards. That is throwing, whether it was accidental or intentional.

  • @TatteredTornNFrayed

if he didnt lose his stick he wouldnt have gotten the save. and he didnt throw his stick. you make is sound like he chucked it at him. it fell out. good save

  • uh if u actualy LOOK u can see that it simply slides just a little bit then when his arm hit the ice his stick came out he did not loose the stick till after the stick was made it Should have scored as a save

  • @TatteredTornNFrayed

    Your a dumb ass

I'll tell you what happened he LET GO of his stick so that he could reach back even further.

God you people who think they know everything piss me off with your retardedness.

  • wow

  • whine whine whine

TB fans, how is it that you always get top 3 draft picks every year but still suck enough to get another for the next year?

  • Whining or not, it's legitimate. The Lightning have consistently had bad calls made against them, hence the complaints. I've been watching them closely since 2003. Questionable goals against them have been allowed. Goals that should have been awarded were disallowed (Look up "Steven Stamkos Shootout vs Kari Lehtonen Refs Toronto Suck" -- just the latest in a series of horrible calls). Out of 20 or so reviews, I've seen them go TB's way maybe 3 times. They'd have better luck flipping a coin.

  • umm... minus the goal against them in overtime of the stanely cup finals that would have ended the series and was over the line on the replay. seeing as that one actually mattered ill say they should suck it up.

  • I think you're talking about the shot in Game 6 before OT. If the puck was so clearly over the line in the replay, then the refs should have made the right call, and you can bet that they would be more likely to get it right on the biggest stage of the game: the Stanley Cup championship. It was overruled because it wasn't conclusive, and you couldn't see the puck cross the line from the top-view, which is way more understandable than some of these other blatant wrong calls.

  • Even so, Calgary had another shot to win the game in OT and in Game 7, and there was no guarantee that the Lightning couldn't tie up the game before regulation after pulling Khabibulin.

  • Besides all that, look at the Pittsburgh Penguins. They played badly from 2002 to 2006, which allowed them to get high draft picks to pick up Crosby, Malkin, and Fleury throughout that period. They just last year won the Cup, 3 years after their last high draft pick. Getting one high draft pick doesn't mean you're going to turn your team around instantly, especially considering it's a team sport and a single player, no matter how great, can only do so much.

  • ya tb fans are gay

  • so TB gets hedman rather than duchene...

  • What a bullshit call.

And, this is coming from a fan of the Canucks.

  • Comment removed

  • get over it

  • he let his stick go after hejduk shot

  • terrible call at its best..

  • terrible call

  • the puck wouldn't have hit his blocker if it didn't hit his stick. it would have gone in.

but..... i don't know if he threw it. kind of looked like a drop to me

    i'm an avs fan btw

  • i don't even see where the grey area is. its completely obvious at .53 the stick has left smith's hand and the puck hit the stick. it isnt even hard to see. the only issue is whether or not he threw it,but u cant blame the refs for the call his arm was going in that direction and the stick flew out of his hand

  • hahaha that was soo sick what raycroft did at the end he made the save and tossed the puck into the crowd hahaha

  • hahah i remember seeing this when i watched that game it was so funny hahaha iw ill say it was a bullshit call but it doesnt matter because mike smith still sucks and milan hejduk still kicks ass

  • mike smith sucks?!?! you gotta be fucking kidding me! look at his stats except for wins and loses before he got hurt. top 10 in gaa and save percentage. mike smith is one of the top up and coming goalies and will lead the bolts back to the playoffs this season. go bolts

  • alright maybe he doesnt suck but hes definitely not good either hes decent at best but usually mediocre if the lightning make the playoffs this year it will be because of steve stamkos, victor hedman, vinny lecavalier, and martin st. louis not mike smith

  • Incorrrect, sir. Unless you're the Detroit Red Wings, you need good goaltending to be successful, especially to make the playoffs. Mike Smith will definitely be one of the best goalies in the league once he gets his concussion issues under control.

  • alright keep telling yourself that hes mediocre at best

  • who whoa whoa buddy, I hope your not taking a shot at my teams goaltending .. Maybe it's not the best in the league or anything but it's still good. This was an off year for Ozzy. Also I think that Wings goalies get overshadowed by the depth of the D-Men, Lidstrom, Rafalski, Kronwall, Stuart, Ericsson, Lilja and that tool Lebda.. Best in the league :)

  • Oh, for sure. I mean depth isn't usually referred to as sick, but it's for sure sick. My point being that they don't need great goaltending to maintain a playoff spot, look at the year dom retired. They both were not lookin so hot till Osgoods last run in net. Osgoods smart, and theres definitely pressure in Detroit if you're a goalie, but if you really take an in-depth look at him in net, his team takes away nearly every scoring chance, not every shot, but most quality scoring chances.

  • I agree, I think Smith is a really solid goalie and Tampa Bay is learning not to purchase their team during the offseason.

They got some nice pick ups this year, Tanguay, Ohlund and Kurtis Foster. They also drafted Victor Hedman, I think Hedman will be a much better player than Tavares ... sorry Isle fans.

Not to mention Stamkos has a year under his belt after a fine rookie season, Also Malone, Lecavalier and St. Louis are still there.

I think Tampa might be able to make the playoffs.

  • Im an avalanche fan and i thought that was a really funny call but to be honest he had made the save, they shouldn't have ruled a goal, maybe a second shot for Hejduk, but not a goal.

  • i think the refs actually think of ways to fuck up the NHL

  • I am personaly an avalanche fan and i thought it was so fucking funny that it was a goal but it was a good call for the no save but the goal not good

  • BULLSHIT CALL

  • What a bunch of bull shit he droped his stick after he saved the shot

refs are a bunch of shit heads

  • omfg you guys are retards ever heard of Betting everyone wanted a better team than lightnings to win and try to get to the fucking play offs god are you all retards all people care is money when they bet in a hockey game

  • i am a avs fan but i also realy like mike smith either way it was the right call if he held on to it would have been a great save

  • Avs where going to win anyways

  • haha

  • It;s the rule, stick left his hand in the act of making the save. It's a good goal, it has nothing to do with whether his stick touched the puck.

  • go avs woooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!! refs are refs dont be babies about it

  • wow that's bullshit.

  • I saw this replay in 3 different angles...the save was made by the blocker way before his stick went to the ice.. went for the poke check and had to release the stick due to the angle that his arms and body were falling to the ice

  • i saw this replay in 3 different angles.. the stick was out of his hand before hejduk even shot the puck. refs made the right call

  • dickwade he didnt throw the stick

  • pwned

  • Im not a fan of either team so my view is impartial. I think it was the rigth call by the refs. Hasek used to always "drop"/put his stick down on the ice so he could make a save with his blocker. Its an illegal move.

  • I can claim to be impartial to. it doesn't mean a thing.

  • but he had the stick in his hand then it hit the stick, hit his blocker, then the stick fell, he didnt throw it?

  • hahah i fucking love raycrofts reaction

  • ditto

  • thats fucking shit!!!!!!!!!!!!they should have won that game!!!!!!!!those fucking refs pulled the game just like the refs did in the world series with the rays!!!!!!!!!!lightning are an awsome team and they deserve that win just like the rays deserved to win the world series.

  • :54 in.. the puck obviously hits the stick, rewatch it and notice the puck changes direction/starts fliping differently, tossing the stick was the only reason it was not a goal

  • or maybe your an idiot because the reason the puck didn't go into the net was because it was clearly saved by the blocker, and the only reason the stick looks like it "was thrown" was because smith hit it with his glove at 0:43 after the save.

  • ya. those refs need to stop smoking their fucking weed. im so pissed that thgeir that much of an idiot.

  • Comment removed

  • i think you should watch it again

  • he would of scored even if the goalie didn't throw his stick

  • the stick didn't touch the puck..

  • WOW. Your just as retarded as the officials...

  • (Reply to jake9450)

  • i am not a lightning fan but i am also not a fan of sucky calls, especially wen it results in a win 4 the other team

  • im a lightning fan and that call pissed me off so much, i almost threw my remote at my tv. thats gonna be, hands down, the worst call of the season. the refs seem to always fuck over my bolts. the ref who made the call should be fired and the rules concerning reviews in a shootout need to be changed so the people in toronto can have a say in calls like that to make everything fair for the teams in shootouts.

  • Correct actions by the referees!

    1. How can you prove that the stick was thrown not intentionally?

    2. The puck hits the stick first, then the blocker!

    3. The goalie acted not according hockey rules by throwing the stick, that's why the goal should be counted, if to allow remake the shot, then goalies will be throwing their sticks "unintentionally" every game.

  • that rule makes sense but it doesnt seem to me he threw it, he dropped it (what it looks like to me)

  • Not even worthy of a redo imo. It was a clear save.

  • i am from colorado.. but I really dont think he threw his stick.. it should of been a re-do

  • How does a non goal count as a goal??

    It should be a redo.

Even though he never threw the stick. Rip off.

  • get over it avs win you lose pay attention to the next game not like the lighting are gonna make very far this season avs are not that great this season either but forget it it happened game over deal with it

  • I hate Mike Smith, I think he's a punk, but that's a horrible call. I wouldn't say Worst Ever but it was atrocious that a linesman can change everyone's mind like that and it's not reviewable.

Phil Esposito went nuts on XM Radio today about it.

  • what channel is that on?

  • alltitude

  • in there video is 2 thinks i hate!refs and martin St. Louis fail!noo...

  • thats bullshit theres a difference between dropping your stick and throwing it. it looked like when he extended his stick hit the ice which forced the stick out of his hand

  • The video is so fuzzy on here. It's so much clearer in High Def.

I know that if more people had a chance to look at it in HD they would see the things I'm pointing out.

  • I spoke too soon. Watch between 40 and 42 seconds over and over again. Watch the toe of Hejduk's stick, and the heel of Smith's stick. You will see Smith let go of his stick a fraction of a sec before Hejduk finished his shot.

  • I've been a hockey fan for almost 30 years, and a Lightning fan since 1992. That's the worst call I've ever seen.

  • i was there....bbbbuuuulllllsssssshhhhhiiiiiitttttttt call

  • I was there too, and was embarrassed by the actions of the coach, throwing the stick on the ice, and of the fans, throwing crap at players and refs.

The video replay that they showed didn't help matters either. There was NO WAY you can tell from the overhead cam that the stick was out of Smiths hands before the shot was taken.

The side view shows the stick falling to the ice before the shot was ever made. AND the goal cam shows the puck deflecting from the falling stick to Smiths blocker.

  • Pause the video at :41-:42

Smiths stick is 6 inches out of his hand, and the puck is still on Hejduks blade.

Smith made the INITIAL save with his "dropped" stick. THAT IS BULL!! The only reason the puck hit his blocker is because it caromed off his scuttled stick.

  • Balls- it hit the stick first.

  • i was there absolutely bullshit!
