  • This song has such a bittersweet effect on me. I love it because it's such a lush tune, but it's nostalgic. This was Phyllis's breakout tune into the mainstream music scene. Her voice is truly missed.

  • One of the greatest female artist ever and never realized her value....smh! Sad

  • This song is one of the greatest long songs of all time. There isn't many songs that have the background music that speaks to the soul like Norman Connors does. Go ahead Phyllis.

  • Will never be another

  • nice female jazz

  • We took Phyllis for granted, but I know I appreciated her.

  • The loss of this woman, was a serious one for any lover of pure singing talent!

Smooth, silky, velvety, and a touch or power to throw in the mix, if needed!

  • oh gosh, why are tears coming to my eyes... Saw this lovely lady in perform in Richmond, Virgina... she was coming out of a doorway and I was going down some stairs, as I turned to say hello... I lost my footing and fell down the stairs...very embarrassing for me, but hurt foot and all I was able to see a class act...what a voice, what beauty and style - where have all the flowers gone why are they all leaving us too soon ... RIP Phyllis Hyman

  • @essiusc CAUSE GOD WANTS THEM FOR HIMSELF !!!!

  • She didn't want to change the world she just wanted to be your girl. All of her failed relationships got her in the end, she didn't even tell her best friend Anita Baker at the time, what she was about to do. She felt that was the only answer, it wasn't, now that I'm encroaching my 40's I understand a little more of what she was going through. Her music lives on.

  • @Tacoma1993 please stop you made me cry. i knew about her b/c i saw her on school daze. she was just stunning looks and voice. then i watched her unsung and i was hooked

  • She leaves her mark on this as only she can. R.I.P. Phyllis, we miss you.

  • mmmm got to be the best version...

  • this young lady will never die, she lives forever in our hearts and minds...annointed and appointed for all who has ever been in love and lost.

  • @MsChelz1 Bet you said the same bout Whitney, Vesta, etc.

  • I have not heard this song in a long time.

  • I heard the sad news of her death listening to the quiet storm; then my eyes had their own storm, the tears would not stop!

  • Oh my God! Her voice is so silky smooth! She literally put me in a romantic mood. Beautiful voice!

  • here by order of goonerholic

  • many an artist has done this piece..like the true artist she was Phyllis puts her own distinct signature here.

  • I can't choose a favorite song by Phyllis...She seems to put that special something in anything that sings. R.I.P..... we miss you sooooo much!

  • I was luck enough it see her one evening at the Blue Moon in New York, New Years Eve, waiting to get in when there was snowing and a line around the corner. Plus no one complained, well always be my all time favorite singer and performer...

  • I looove this so much. I love phyllis hyman <3

  • I'm 23 yrs old and I remember my mother loving her growing up. Such great talent. May she R.I.P.

  • My God, I was lucky enough to meet her 6 months before she died. I have it on tape and I will treasure it aways!

  • My now husband and I saw Phyllis in a small intimate lounge in West Palm Beach, FL about 30 years ago and the crispness and sincerity of her voice will never be forgotten. With the postings of her songs, those of us who appreciate music can smile because we know what we know! She is surely missed but her music lives on.

    pianomom1000

  • Wow, what a sweet arrangement of this classic Stylistics tune! She really does have great pipes, a true song stylist.

  • Beautiful song and GORGEOUS singer !

Came to know Phyllis Hyman in Hawaii while dancing in the clubs and serenading this song in my apartment to all friends and neighbors. Very sorry to lose this VOICE so early in life but we have this recording and many more of this wonderful songstress.

  • THIS IS BY FAR, MY FAV RENDITION OF THIS CLASSIC..SHE IS MAGICAL..LIKE SILK...REAL...

  • thank you!!! ps you uploaded two days before my tenth birthday!

  • she's the bomb! i miss her sooooo much.

  • This is one of the best songs Ive ever heard...hands down.

  • How can you dislike this song? The first few words that leave her mouth will leave you speechless.

  • @nikkipoo132000 The two that voted her music down are either hearing challenged, or fools.

  • @BigNice001 or something. Its weird how people complain about not hearing good music and then once someone presents it to them, they don't like it. Smh

  • Love it !

  • She committed suicide, due to depression!! What a shame!! She left a note saying "I can't take this anymore...I'm sorry"!! :(

  • Love her voice!

  • the comments here are so well said that there is nothing left to say, and yet i must weigh in. this song and ms. hyman's voice just blow me away. i love her rendition of this song. heard at least of couple of theories about why she decided to end her life. don't know why she did, but i am so sorry that she is gone.

  • When I first saw her in concert she opened for Peabo Bryson. She was so wonderful that the main attraction felt like a let down, and I was hooked from that moment on. Loosing her was like loosing a friend. A great talent gone to soon. I can not imagine how it must have felt to have such talent and never get you due. R.I.P and thanks for sharing your beautiful voice with the world.

  • This brought tears to my eyes!

  • beautifully sung

  • This was one of the most beautiful voices ever! You are truly missed Phyliss.

  • i miss you phyllis...

  • classic...

  • My mom's favorite singer. Such a beautiful woman. She died too young. She was so sad, and i believe depression killed her, but now the angels get to here this beautiful voice.

  • I remember back in the 70's my sister brought this home on a 45.I remember I thought the singer had one of the most beautiful rich lovely voices I had ever heard. I would play this over and over. That was the first time I heard Phyllis Hyman. In later years became a die hard fan and bought everything I could find of her. She was one of the greats.

  • SHE HAS A VOICE THAT MAKES ME FEEL SO ALIVE AND INSPIRED I HAVE BEEN IN AWE OF MS HYMAN SINCE I WAS A LITTLE GIRL AND STILL TO THIS DAY I FEEL EXTREMELY BLESS

  • i luvvvvvvvvv her RIP phyliss you are dearly MISSED ALOT

  • this is real music

  • I like this version of Betcha By Golly, Wow the best. If I am not mistaken, this was either released right before or right after her death.

  • @edwinachikere ... Actually, this song was released in 1976; she died in 1995 -- suicide -- just a few days before her 46th birthday. It is from the Norman Connors album "You Are My Starship." The album also features the title song (".....Starship") by Michael Henderson.

  • Classic sound, classic voice I love this redition. Thank you for posting

  • Boy do I miss her personhood, however her voice is timeless.

  • Whenever I hear this lady's voice the tears get heavy in my eyes. And I am a grown ass man but I miss Phyllis so much.

  • (continued)... She sang what seemed this long version (some compilations give you a version about 1½ minutes shorter). The audience was mesmerized. The back-ups sang the song all the way "to fade." At the end you could hear a pin drop. Roar of thunder; standing ovation... The audience JUST... FELL... OUT!!! Half of those in tears... I know... I was one of them. Damn-it, I miss Phyllis and her music so much!

  • I was so fortunate to see her many times in concert. The first time I heard her sing this song in concert was at the now-defunct Circle Star Theatre, 30-minutes south of San Francisco. She was 6-ft-4-in tall; wore 4-inch red pumps to match her red dress; hair in her trade-mark up-sweep. She looked like a bronze statue that had come to life, if only to sing this song. She sat on a large speaker; cordless mic in hand, long legs dangling; under a mirror ball with the stage rotating...

  • @SouLoveReal Sounds like the experience of a lifetime!

  • AWESOME!!!!! NOW THAT'S THE WAY YOU START OFF A SONG. THE SINGERS TODAY START OFF THEIR SONGS AND THE FIRST NOTE IS TOTALLY OFF KEY AND THEY JUST CONTINUE TO GO OFF KEY.

  • I've heard it said that she had perfect pitch and that she could get a song right-THE FIRST TIME, try that you later day wonders!

  • @Darrell1019

THESE SINGERS TODAY CAN'T EVEN GET THE FIRST NOTE OF THE SONG CORRECT AND IT JUST GOES DOWN HILL FROM THERE.

PHYLLIS STARTS OFF WITH "THERE'S A SPARK OF MAGIC IN YOUR EYES". THESE SINGERS TODAY WILL FLUBBED THAT ENTIRE PART AND THEY WOULD HAVE JUST CONTINUE TO MAKE IT WORSE. THEY WOULDN'T EVEN BE ABLE TO HIT THE "THERE'S" RIGHT. PHYLLIS SUNG EVERY NOTE OF THE ON POINTE...EVERY NOTE.

  • @MIMI88998899 Thanks for you note of accord. Don't worry, someone will come along (LATER) who can take up where Phyllis left off. That one AIN'T here now!

  • @SenseUality Prince's version was good but the video was a bit weird

he had nothing compared to this version

  • I miss you so much Phyllis. Your voice speaks to my heart each and every time I hear your voice. Love is eternal and forever... and you always be with us. I love you so very much.

  • R. I. P Phyllis, you are an angel~!!!!

  • Diva of all Divas..Her voices touches my heart and soul and frankly makes me cry probably because every note is sung from the heart and because we are all connected by a fine thread feel what she must have been feeling when she sung it. Worth checking out her all her songs..all of them are sung with the same resonnance that pulls the strings of my heart..miss you.

  • WOW!!.. There are no words to describe Miss Hyman.

  • My favorite Phyllis Hyman song- this song is everlasting...

  • I MISS HER TOO R.I. P PHYLLIS!

  • This is a lovely song, very well done!

  • Gary Bartz on alto saxophone.

  • Everyone needs to thank Norman Connors for bringing out Ms. Phyllis Hyman. That voice of hers could stir emotions from a Vulcan. I have loved her from the very first time I heard this song back in the late 70's. I miss her so much and only wish she was here with us today. Love you girl!!!!

  • @vesuviuspro Couldn't of said it better, V!!!!

  • @vesuviuspro Yes INDEED!

  • The only thing that can be said about the vocal delivery of this song: classic. The Stylistics did an outstanding job, but Norman Connors and Phyllis turned this thing into what can only be described as a MASTERPIECE. Love you Phyllis, RIP.

  • Phyllis Hyman was an beautiful singer. She will never be forgotten

  • HAVE MERCY, JESUS, and Living All Alone, breaks my Heart.

  • Lady your one of a kind, still miss you, your old friend

  • I had the pleasure of seeing Ms. Hyman perform this in Dallas, Texas in 1983. She was a great singer and performer. Funny, natural and what a voice. Absolutely, clear and just as you hear it here. I have her albums so I always listen to her. She is one of our great voices and I wll always miss her.

  • I agree PrettyVillan

  • There are NO words to describe this song AT ALL!!!

  • R.I.P. Phyllis Hyman I'm so sorry you were so beautiful and talented!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Oh my ,do I remember when this one was released!

  • stylistics version was like "go to the studio and sing this script and call it a day. Her version "I'm gonna go to the studio, aww shit, sing this script, nope fuck it i come up with my own version. I dont got nothing else to do today...lol".

And that she did and if you notice, she puts more into it like keeps going and going from mid 4-minutes 'til the end of the song. When it ends you will catch your safe saying "keep going strong". She did the damn thing. Dueces

  • it's an amazing song from a great singer!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and the video is awesome , too, thanks for sharing , love Kate

  • This song reminds me of my Baby, he is sooo fresh literally, not a man that has been around Robin's Barn, not a rabbit that has jumped from hole to hole, simply authentic. He is a rare find. I never knew this type of love was possible.

  • @minikagura Good Point. Yes Phyllis left a mark for sure.

  • MY GIRL DID THIS

  • Phyllis was one of the most amazing performers I've ever seen live!...I saw her many times in NYC and she always delivered!.....Being 6 foot tall and with a voice as big as the Grand Canyon.....she was imposing and mesmerizing at the same time!.....What a performer!!!...R.I.P..... Phyllis....

  • Today is June 30, 2010, on this very day fifteen years ago, The Late Great Phyllis Hyman took her own life and it truly broke my heart. I grieved for more than a year. I had to pray, pray and pray over the loss. I couldn't believe it. I had just saw her six months early at the strand in Redondo Beach California and she put on and awesome show. Phyllis asked the audiance "What do you want to hear? and I screamed You know How To Love Me and she said "That's In The Show" I miss you Phyllis RIP

  • RIP sophisticated lady, true class and beauty

  • 15 yrs ago today, god received one of his sweetest sounding angels into his kingdom. I hope Phyllis received the peace in her afterlife that she couldnt seem to find/maintain here.

  • PHYLLIS HYMAN I MISS YOU AND YOUR MUSIC RIP

  • THE BEST GET IT PHYLLIS

  • @MultiHaughton God didn't take her... she took herself

  • @futurescholar91 - there is no God. Get your head out of your ass and grow up. Phyllis set herself FREE because the likes of you have destroyed our world with your religious oppression.

  • @Messylin THERE IS A GOD and soon we'll all behold his magnificence!

  • @chrisiam1968 - wake up and read Richard Dawkins! Anybody can write a Bible and call it divine truth.

  • great song

  • Phyllis Hyman, the beautiful 6 foot 2 inch soul and jazz diva who left us much too soon, but left us with so much beautiful music, like this song recorded with drummer, producer, group leader Norman Connors with Gary Bartz' marvelous alto sax solo.

  • One of the most beautiful songs and delivery ever produced. Phyllis was something else! True, raw talent.

  • smh the good die so young....rip my lady of soul...

  • Miss you, Phyl...we almost had that day shopping and sharing stories of Miami and the Checkmate Lounge. So close! Be happy.

  • Dedicated to a " Real Man" Francisco Rafael Arellano Felix

Who holds my heart and soul in his pocket.

  • I feel the same way...Wish Phyllis Hyman were still here. A beautiful lady for all time.

  • A beautiful song, and lady. Wish you were here.RIP

  • oooh!

  • Her voice makes me feel so.........cozy.......relaxed......comfortable!

  • This song is the best by the late great queen of jazz singer and actress ever. And it is better than the Stylics and the Sugababes. The most popular song from her other hits as well.

  • A serious slick-sweet soul diva if there ever was one: and there were others too, ya know... Natalie Cole, Syreeta (serious, serious Stevie Wonder vibe), Patti LaBelle, Jean Carne, Angela Bofill, Melba Moore, Stephanie Mills (starred in "The Wiz" on Broadway), the gals who sang with Dr. Buzzard, the gals who sang with Chic (Alfa and Luci)...a whole different fashion-vibe...and they had breasts, and hips! Lovely ladies with lovely, lovely voices. There like may never come again....

  • oh my gosh!!!! just hear the passion in her voice!!!! i'll never get tired of this song!!!

  • truly the best

  • This lady was a true gem if ever one existed, dearly miss her talent. Beautiful rendition of a classic.

  • I came upon this by chance and was enchanted.

  • WOW!!! I miss her.... RIP

  • I love her voice. She is so awesome
