The police use their discretion and most of the time people complain or make it so the officer ends up arresting them. The police use their discretion and most of the time people complain or make it so the officer ends up arresting them. There would be no story here if the professor didn't throw the race card and get in the officers face. This would've been just a 5 minute conversation and the professor would've gone home.

At the time of this answer by President Obama, he should have left his answer short an sweet that the investigation is ongoing. He probably heard one side of what happened and not the police side. Who is to say that the Harvard Professor "refused" to give his I.D. to the officers on the scene until after he was arrested. I think the President could have used different words or phrases in answering this question. He did not need to go into race especially if he said he was not there.

Here in the UK if one group or race of individuals in an area are commiting crime the police will target them. The police have numerous race related operations the most famous being operation trident which exclusively targets gun crime amoungst black people. Take a step back and ask yourself this: what's more important, you being stopped for your race or criminals getting taken off the street? Imagine if a member of your family was killed and it could have been prevented by a stop and search.

This was one dangerous situation. By Obama saying this, he now has the power to dub any legally forceful act of a black man as "acting stupidly." The media, especially CNN, portrayed this incident in a way that made us believe that Gates cooperated and the police officer mistreated him badly. I seriously doubt that Gates cooperated like everybody thinks he did. Even if this was the officer's fault, any cases we see similar to this in the future are going to be the white cop's fault from now on.
