You bring up a good point. The technique you were taught does work better for many people although young kids might find it more difficult. However if you do a flap ball change and are traveling I don't know that the lift & lower technique is the best, instead I would say you need to do the brush forward. Also keep in mind that the fast you go the less you lift behind you...it's sort of a natural progression to reduce the size of the movement as you speed up.
when i learned the flap,i was told NOT to pull my feet back but to lift my knees and take it from above,not from behind....and it works so much better...but everyone has theyr own way of doin it i guess
