Dear Mr Beausejour I would really like to play the harpsichord as I feel I have an affinity with it.Do you do masterclasses in the Summer.Above is a recording of the Gigue I made last night using my fairly rudimentary home equipment. What do you think? Happy New Year Rosemary
Two keyboards jacks are locked together so the plectra for the upper manual are actuated when the lower manual is played. This causes two (or more) strings to sound simultaneously, plucked at different distances from the bridge. This results in louder and mixed timbres: more nasal near the brdge and round. The upper manual could still be played separately, actuating only one set of jacks/strings. This means you have different volume, tones and levels available mechanically in a variety of mixes.
Such great skill is exercised in the pursuit of simplicity of utterance! Anyone can make this gigue sound difficult; it takes an artist to find the elegance and joy that are at the heart of this piece.
This harpsichordist really understands this piece. I've heard this gigue played all too often in a very hard, mechanical style, but this rendition is very sensitive and musical. Even though the harpsichord can't be played at different volumes, the musical interpretation nevertheless always comes through.
@JupiterIV : Yes. Like often in Bach, bipartite dances are often treated counterpunctually, with fugue-like expositions, episodes, inversions in the second part, etc....

The only thing i dislike about Bach and the Harpsichord is that there is no contrast in dynamics. Like Beethoven and Chopin, for example, would sound absolutely terrible on the harpsichord, but thats just me.
Seriously, if I operated an ice cream truck, I would have this playing to attract the kiddies. If it went in to the conciseness of one in 2500 kids as something of value in this world, got them thinking, it would be worth it.

Pirates of the Caribbean! I love this gigue! And the one from Partita No. 1. Ah, Herr Bach, kisses! Very well played, too! Thanks for sharing this.

word up, yo
i agree with KhagarBalugrak, this is a performance that is better than some of the more famous harpsichordists
the thing i like most about this performance is the implied rhythm of the piece, which many performers fail to capture
