One of the top matches in 1989. I was out of the country for most of the year (Navy) so I didn't get to see a lot of wrestling action. In this match, Eric won the match making the World Class Wrestling Association into the United States Wrestling Association. A classic match.
This was a great bit of business by Jerry Jarrett as he managed to book it where the tried and true World Class promotion was made to be the thing that everyone wanted to see destroyed even though it's almost always the tried and true that is the babyface side in promotional wars lol.
i liked the uswa but that just plain sucked.they couldnt find a better way to merge than kill wccw in the sportatorium? the fans deserved to say goodbye but to stomp on the world class banner 2 me is equal 2 stomping on the von erichs.btw i couldnt believe the fans in dallas actually cheered that.
Well if u listen to Jim Cornette's shoot on WCCW on Youtube it explains all the questions of why fans got turned off to WCCW.When u think of WCCW you think VON ERICHS.Fans were disgusted with the Von Erich's reckless behavior the last 5 yrs the drugs,no shows at house shows,suicides/deaths preforming terribly.Wrestling in Dallas made a comeback after this. How it all unraveled I'm not quite sure but I thought it was a wise move to put the Von Erichs on the backburner&have new stars n their place
U know I never thought about it like that, great point.when u put it like that i can definetely understand how they felt about the Von Erichs at the time
i remember watching this and the weeks episode b4 on channel 56 kdoc anaheim california at 12am saturday nights and actually shed a tear when they tore down the banner . man this is when wrestling was good and not the crap vince turned it into wish someone had these on dvd
you arn't the only one... i am so tired of seeing the same old awa matches, no blood, no brawls no nothing. i wish there was a way to contact espn classics to see when and if they are going to show some other wrestling besides old awa!!!!
Exactly, and personally, I prefer World Class. I grew up on it and rather watch that. It was a sad day when Jerry Jarrett came in and "Memphisized" the promotion.
I didn't really mind the "Memphisized" (as you put it) version of World Class, but it was sort of sad to see it end like that, especially with the fans cheering the name change to USWA. I think they ran some sort of angle where Akbar and Yamamoto had corrupted World Class and the only way to stop them was for Eric Embry to defeat them and usher in the USWA. It was a stupid angle, but they didn't have really any choice other than to make USWA the face as opposed to heel World Class
Don't worry about it. Actually, I remember the angle and yes, it was stupid. I mean, Eric Embry being the savior of the promotion? lol
If only Fritz had nationalized, it would've been around longer. I tuned out after the first edition of "USWA Wrestling" and so did the station where I watched it.
what ever happen to Al Perez??? he had potential....thumbs up if this guy sounds like Seinfield?

My 2nd (and last) Sportatorium card that I attended was when USWA was around. I still remember when they used those "Renegade's Rampage" signs..

I wish ESPN Classic in America would start airing World Class/USWA. Its cool they're airing AWA, but I want to see World Class

You are right, World Class Wrestling was a better booked promotion.

I agree. Bring back World Class Legends of Wrestling. If they can show AWA, they can show World Class.
acehighpat 2 years ago
Yeah, cuz if ESPN holds the rebroadcast rights to the AWA shows, they should hold them for Legends of World Class as well.

My guess would be that Tojo and Skandor would be running (and ruining things) if PY won instead of Eric.
