It is my hope that Greece will unite once again and join with the rest of the western world to defeat the heathen Persians one more time. Iran and the godless muslims of the east are on the rise yet again. It is my sincere wish that the free and democratic west will once more rise to the challenge and put down the mindless barbarians of the east. However, I fail to see a Leonidas or an Alexander today... we have the power but not the leadership. We should all pray for a general like Leonidas.
Correct me if im wrong but, in the end, wasnt it the athenians who eventually managed to defeat the persians? they used new technologies and strategies to do so and not pure brawn. at least that is what I remember reading :))
@aydooknow Athenians fought bravely in the battle of Marathon as well as in the naval engagement in Salamina but when it comes to Thermopylae this battle was fought by 300 Spartans who were the main soldiers along with 90 Mycenaeans,700 Thespeans and 400 Thebans.As for the new strategies Melteades was the one who thought of it in the battle of Marathon!
Also, Leonidas died before the battle truly ended. He was killed by a chance strike, and both sides fought for possession of the body. The Spartans ultimately recovered Leonidas' corpse, but were soon annihilated, having only numbered less than 100 by the close of the epic battle.
Of course, the ensuing Battle of Plataea was decisive. Although the Greeks were badly beaten, the Spartans, alongside the commanding officer, managed to break the will of the Persian army and sent them into full route. Of course, the defense at the Battle of Thyrmopolae was not only conjoined by just 300 or more Spartans, but another group of Greeks from another city state, who died valliantly at Leonidas' side to the end.

The Greeks held off a giant Persian offensive at Thermopylae. Ancient accounts had the Persians at over 1 million troops, modern day hypothesis figure anywhere from 100,000 to 300,000 vs over 1,000 Greek troops consisting of 300 Spartans. The Greeks finally defeated the Persians a year later at the battle of Plataea. Please learn some history.

@erik3423 It does depict the real battle without the super monster thing though but it does reflect what happened back then on a great percent,the basic plot of the movie depends on reality.Herodotus describes the battle and the Persian wars just fine.

@skatosauros Spartans were by far the best warriors, but the Athenians were the ones that ended the war. The Spartans and others kept the Persians busy and bought time for the Athenian Navy to arrive and destroy all of the Persian transport and supply ships, forcing the Persians to surrender.

@smoggyben Those are your opinions, and you are entitled to them. I do need to point out, that this is a highly exaggerated movie (good, but highly exaggerated) and the Battles of Thermopylae and Plataea looked nothing like this (with the exception of maybe the first few seconds of the Battle of Thermopylae where they're in formation). Also, the fact the spartans were wearing armor (unlike here) and the fact they had stronger shields and spears are largely what contributed to their success.

@dunkelfier Oh no doubt that this is just a glorified version of what happnened but not just the spartans most warriors throughout history who had to fight up close and use their strength to win are in my opinion much more worthy of recogition then modern armies.

@smoggyben And I'm not trying to say their stand at Thermopylae was not brilliant in terms of the military tactics at the time, the fact they used the landscape to their advantage and a relatively simple phalanx formation (along with having better weapons and armor) to hold off hundreds of thousands of soldiers shows that they were credible warriors. But most people who see this movie thinks Spartans are nearly super-human, as portrayed in this movie.

It's funny how they portray the Spartans as freedom fighters when in reality they resorted to conquering all of the Peloponnese and maid most of their conquered who were far enough away into enslaved people called Hellots. They literally did all the manual labor and got annual beatings to remind them of their status. In fact, this battle only had 5000 Spartans, accompanied by 5000 perioikoi (dependent allies) and then 30000 hellots who had no more then a spear and were considered expendable.

@Ultramarine998 I wouldn't say cocky, the Greeks were never viewed as a major power until after the fall of the Persian armies and have stayed divided into their city states until the end of the war when the Athenian Navy scored the final victory at sea. The Persians held Northern Ionian Greece after conquering the last empire that occupied it and even quenched the Ionian Revolt supported by Athens. Greeks even viewed Persia as an enemy for many centuries. Matter of time before war broke out.
