Zecora has the Supernaturals book. It was a separate copy from Twilight's, so she must have gotten the book from somewhere. And note that the mayor of Ponyville talked about "another year of scandal" if the ponies didn't wrap up winter in time, so perhaps Ponyville does have to look to Celestia if they mess up.
All you grown men who watch my little pony and obsess over it are ridiculous lol. Go out and get laid(by a chick, not a horse) or something. This show is made for little 5 year old GIRLS. Kinda makes you all give off a creepy pedophile vibe.
Or Celstia Had the Power to move the Earth itself, moving the planet requires greater magic, and Luna, Hence being young only has enough magical to move the moon
Oh, Queen, eh? Oh, very nice... And how'd you get that, eh? By exploiting the workers! By hanging on to outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuates the economic and social differences in Equestria! If there's ever gonna be any progress in Ponyville...
I think it's fair to say that Twilight's educational experience is sufficiently extraordinary that we cannot draw broad conclusions about socialist tendencies in Equestrian academia. It looks more like a medieval system of patronage, and the number of ponies specially sponsored by the Princess must by practicality be limited to a mere hoof-full. Certainly even in Canterlot the vast majority of higher education takes a more mundane form, though that is outside the scope of our direct observation.
They could have a base communist society, where anybody can ask for a government job that would help Ponyville directly, like RD's weather control. These jobs would be secure and have a flat timed payment. However they could offer the chance to create your own business where you would forgo this reliable monthly payment to make your own job, where you would have to support yourself. AJ's farm and Mr and Ms Cake's shop could be independent businesses.
There are definitely taxes. In episode 3, one of the pony extras offers to pay Twilight's taxes in exchange for her extra ticket. You have to listen closely, but it's there.
I don't think the Winter Wrap-Up is mandatory. Twilight states early in the episode that she simply wants to help. I think it's completely voluntary, but you'll look like a lazy dick if you don't. It's not a legal obligation, but a social one.
The weather service, to me, is indeed like the post office. But post masters still get paid. It is indeed a job. Twilight is't just a student, she's a protoge, hand picked. Celestia's footing the bill. AJ sells apples, Rarity sells clothes, Pinkie sells cake. Flutters is like a park ranger (gov job) and a vet (technical job). Cheerilee teaches. WWU is not manatory. It's a tradition. They do it out of pride for the old ways. It's not like jury duty.
Equestria is obviously an Aristotelian Monarchy. Also, you neglect the possibility of the ponies utilizing hoof-made algorithms to create snowflakes. Also, I didn't hear clearly the name of the series mentioned at 11:16, could you please clarify. Lastly, you are both huge nerds. But I am hardly one to throw stones on that point.
I don't think you guys are right about the socio-economic system being Ponyism, I think that between the nobility, public works and Twilight not paying for stuff, it might actually be Ponydalism. What you think is "community service", might be "duty to the lord" (that is princess Celestia) and involve things other than beautification of the demesne, that we simply haven't seen, since it's not something Twilight (who is obviously some soft of freepony/noblepony) would engage in.
You know, the only ponies who I've seen using money and dressing "rich" on any regular basis are earth ponies. My pet theory is, to compensate for having the short end of the stick as far as powers, the earth ponies have developed traits like greed and selfishness. This works well for them, but not for communism. In order to prevent the system from collapsing, earth ponies are allowed to operate under a limited form of capitalism. Apart from the earth ponies base "pony" nature allows it to work.
- Mining Ponies are probably like Pinkie's rock farming parents who probably farm rocks to make cement to build the skyscrapers in manehatten.
- RD seems to be a government worker, Twilight & Spike seem higher up as they do royal business. Fluttershy seems to be a municipal worker though, animals in Ponyville trust her, but animals in the Everfree forest don't know her, and the ones in the royal garden are afraid of her.
- Twilight's apprenticeship: Is her research on friendship part of her own studies or just busy work? She sends reports to Celestria, does that mean Celestria doesn't know this stuff or is it just to show Celestria she's not goofing off?
- If Celestria & Luna really do control the sun & moon...it may mean it's not hard to do or that Celestria is extremely powerful as she can pull double duty to do both for the last 1000 years.
- Appleloocia were Earthpony only too. So Earthpony = Colonists?
- Celestria & Luna appear to be a fourth type of pony, a hybrid of Unicorn & Pegasus. Both of them were alive 1000 years ago. So could it be possible that this 4th type mated with Earth Ponies and their offspring separated into Unicorns and Pegasus'?
- I think Fluttershy living in a cottage might be a special case....I'm unsure if other Pegasus live in houses. However when Pinkie went insane at Gummy's 2nd party, RD does enter sugarcube corner from a door on the 2nd floor! Pegasus' entrance?
- If it was a communist society, would you get those upperclass ponies at the Gala or Manhatten? They appear rich and snobs, surely they can't all be royalty.
- Everypony pitching in to plant crops does appear to be a community service. Applejack farm seems to be private as nobody in town comes to help except her friends. Makes sense as AJ sells her Apples. Although we do see other ponies selling other crops like carrots...does that mean there's other private farms?
@BlitzWing00 Ah, they'd have government jobs if it was a Communist government. Only in a perfect world would Communism work perfectly, and in ours it ended up being Capitalism with 3 major differences, 1. the upperclass was called the Proletariat instead of the Bourgeois, and 2. The normal working class people didn't know that they had less freedoms under Communism, and 3. The upper party members could pretty much get whatever they wanted.
My little pony ,an awesome portal t shirt, a Scott Pilgrim reference, perhaps one of the greatest conversations in the history of mankind? Why am I not subbed to these guys?!
@MeeraTheMooneyed I noticed the books in the display window during editing. I did not notice Fluttershy's books, but I note that at the time of recording, we had not yet seen the inside of her cottage.
I don't think it's so much that they "don't let nature run its course", so much as it's "They take care of climate change themselves and/or with magic in the same way that Princess Celestia has to raise the sun. It's normal for them. That's why the Ever-Free forest ain't natural, because the creatures and plants function all on their own, even the clouds move all by themselves!"
On the subject of taxes, in episode 3, when Twilight is being mobbed by ponies for her spare ticket and the benny hill chase scene is ending(right before she teleports), one of the background ponies says that they'll do her taxes for here. So clearly ponies have taxes.
there are tax in ponyville. in ticketmaster, when the group of ponies heard from pinkie that twi has a ticket, one of them says "i do your taxes!". but this could be just a joke.
@rsmith3813 I noticed that when I was editing. Note how I avoided showing her. ;^)
We recorded the three pilots waaay before the season was over: we're just now putting them up. Some of our speculation is quite premature. Once the first three pilots are out, the next set of shows will be much more correct.
You know, equestria could be rotating and Celestia is just scamming them all by saying she controls the sun and that therefore would allow her to control everyone.
supported by the fact that in Equestria, there are no "normal seasons" and the wildlife does not know how to take care of itself. A state like this would only be reached by an environment that did not naturally occur, but was in fact created. Therefore one could say that Equestria's stability is extremely fragile, as without the sisters or some equivalent, everything would fall into chaos.
I've thought a lot about the sun/moon thing and came up with a couple of solutions. One, The planet or whatever body equestria is on is normally Tidally Locked, and the coming of Celestia/Luna to that world turned it into a normal planet that rotates, freeing up over 85% of the planet's livable land.
Two: more likely, Equestria is some kind of artificial environment, and the Alicorn sisters are required to manipulate it's most important life support abilities. This is supported by (TBC)
This is an extremely pointless and over analytical show about a show that was designed for girls being narrated by a couple of geeks. I love it, and I want more. Keep up the good work, bronies.
I'd like to hear more on pony genealogy and genetics. As far as we've seen so far, parents of earth ponies seem to be other earth ponies, parents of unicorns are unicorns, and parents of pegasi are pegasi. This would suggest that they are, in fact, three different species, at least according to the biological species concept. Otherwise, interbreeding of the three different races would suggest possibly a system where an earth pony is the "default", whereas unicorn/pegasi alleles are co-dominant.
@haratofu But the problem I would see with a system like the latter is that ponies with both wings and horns would be much more common, even though Celestia and Luna seem to be the only ponies with both these traits.
@haratofu Lauren Faust actually said that all three types of pony can interbreed without any issues. And judging by the number of Unicorns, Pegasi, and Earth ponies being more or less even across Equestria, I'd say that each 'species-defining' gene has an even shot at being the dominant one. So, if two ponies who carried all three 'species-defining' genes were to have a foal, that foal would have a 1/3 chance of being either species.
The fandom needs guys like you. I pretty sure most of us can admit we have at some point thought about some of the stuff discussed in this video, but you guys go the extra mile and openly talk about it in that much detail. Please, don't stop doing this, k?
I wouldn't say Equestria is full on Communist, it appears to be Socialist at the most. The government owns the essentials: standard agriculture and the weather, and also manages the education system. But everything else is owned by entrepreneurs and other such business ponies. Applejack owns her own farm, and she appears to receive no aid from the government beyond weather.
@MattaTatta92 (cont) Applejack has mentioned that the farm is under some financial stress, but she hasn't asked for handouts. She appears to be the kind of pony who believes in earning her pay.
Twilight is Celestia's personal protege, which suggests that her expenses are paid for by Celestia, kind of like a paid apprenticeship. So Twilight isn't a good example for the education system as a whole.
The mandatory work does sound like a plan by Celestia to teach independance and cooperation
@MattaTatta92 (cont2) Chances are, Celestia introduced mandatory work shortly after Luna's imprisonment in the moon - as a sort of failsafe against Equestria being thrown into chaos if the Elements of Harmony fail to defeat NMM. And since it's been going on for centuries, it has simply been integrated into culture, and the reason behind it has changed from "In case NMM wins" to "Ensuring everypony learns the value of work and appreciates everything done for them".
@MattaTatta92 (cont3) To end my stupidly long comment, the matter of industry.
Because of the presence of magic and it completely covering science and what we call sci-fi, Equestria's Industrial Revolution is hard to pinpoint and, in some places, has been bypassed completely. There are machines, but only where it seems Unicorns are not common. Unicorns can walk on clouds thanks to spells, but perhaps Pegasi know weather-making better and so Celestia doesn't interfere with weather factories.
My only problem with the ponies controlling the weather, is that they've seemingly failed to take into account the fact that, if you're growing a monoculture crop, like clearly every farmer in Ponyville does, you will suffer from nutrient depletion in the ground; which, if they never let the land have a year off, (Or at least implement some form of crop rotation), Equestria WILL suffer from a massive crop failiure. Not even a good fertiliser would sort that out... :/
You did a very good job at this. But on the there being no pony hobos: We realised something Saturdayn Night in our podcast - At the end of Boast Busters - Trixie is a pony hobo. she loses all her clothes and her house in the usar minor attack and the main characters just throw it out - they don't repair it for her or anything.
I have never thought this much about ponies in my life. :) I might have to check out this show. I still say you guys remind me of the henchmen from the venture bros. (24 rim, 21 scott)

This is the sort of thing that piques my interest

That was fantastic.

Ah but there's a flaw in the podcast: Fluttershy was NOT in fact, the leader of her Winter Wrap-up group.
