First I dont know of any governing body that makes it an official sport and by that simple fact it isnt. I come from an American Kickboxing background and only have friends who teach MMA and I am unsure of any universal rules? In regards to olympics we already have every sport that MMA covers,except these people are better form fighters otherwise the MMA fighter could still compete individually with them but they cant or they would.. many arguments so best to do your own research.

Its been made into a sport, its a mixture of different martial arts, hence the name... sports inside on mma have to stay singular, for instance Judo is pretty inert in MMA, therefore you've got to keep this on its own as a singular sport, I've seen no-gi judo and the whole premace of Judo is the gripping on the opponant to throw or submit when the groundwork commences, gripping is awkward in no-gi, MMA would be interesting at the olympics.

If it is every put into the Olympics, I'll look more like amatuer shooto and less like MMA. MMA will never be in the olympics.

I'd actually be more interested in having general submission grappling in the Olympics so we can get bjj, sambo, judo, catch wrestlers (and other styles) all compete in no gi competition.

MMA needs a bit more seasoning as a style of combat onto itself. Too many fighters are still one-dimensional. A GSP or an Anderson Silva, sure, but there are still too many guys who just want to "stand and bang." (i.e. sloppy boxing).

I think as MMA is right now having it at the olympics would suck a bit, mainly because of the judging. You just don't have the standard quality of judging other martial arts or combat sports have. Then you have the problem that MMA is still sort of a first generation sport, the second generation is just now coming up. I think the sport is far too young and has far too many issues to be in the olympics.

@ahwowlovely yeah you are right. But you have to keep in mind that the olympic games take a lot of cautions with contact sports. Head gear is needed in Tae kwon do and boxing....i have never seen MMA with Head gear!!! anyway I'ld love to see mma as an olympic sport and if that is what we need to do to make it more popular and accesible to the world.. LETS DO IT!!!!

Would love to see it, probably won't happen. All combat sports in the Olympics are based on points. Boxing, wrestling, tae kwon do, fencing, they're all based on a points system. A knockout still counts in boxing in the olympics, but any olympic boxer will tell you that a KO is not what they're looking for. A full contact fighting sport like MMA will not make it through an olympic commitee.

BJJ is a sport that was created off the back of Judo, Judo is an olympic sport as we know, BJJ is primarily about groundwork and would be boring to some people who do understand what is going on, take into account that BJJ would be at other olympic events after Brazil and some nations don't have a massive participation in this event and off that logic the attendance would be lowered causing it to be canceled by the hosts.

i love mma, but it isnt really 60 countries deep yet. Just a handful: US, Brazil, Russia, Japan, and i guess canada. Maybe im wrong but i just dont think it will have enough competitors.

What about crocop for example. He barely knows wrestling or bjj, and with his punching and kicking did an amazing carreer in MMA.

It depends more on the competitor and how well he uses his art, than in the fighting backround of the competitor.

All the combat sports in the olympics have a complicated scoring system.

In wrestling you get points for a takedown, exposing back ect.

In boxing you get points for landing punches.

In mma they would have to come up with something similar... and much less violent.

They would probably have to wear head gear and plastic vests too.

@DhakaMMA Triathlon is a collection of sports already in the olympics as well; swimming, cycling, and running. However, there is a difference in that MMA is far more diverse than a triathlon. MMA deserves to be an Olympic sport but I think it is going to be a very long time.
