  • Excellent Videos. I'm a violinist and the suggestions are quite helpful for me as well. Thanks!

  • I dig those 3 charts.

  • Hello 7notemode,

great explanation, although (in my beginners opinion) very tough tunes. I would really appreciate if you talked about how to construct nice lefthand voicings.

Thank you very much for you effort

  • Loved your approach on "How to Swing". Yes very helpfull. I'm a sax player, dabbling in keyboards as a way to get a better undestanding of Jazz theory. Your graduated aproach is great, especially the singing the rythm and melody.

    Many thanks.

    Ciao

  • LittleGrasshopper, I'm glad you found it helpful. I have a link to download a pdf of the songs I used on my website.

  • Great tips and advice, I found the Parker songs immediately improved my sense of swing or movement altogether whilst trying to play one easy/ish one's "Scrapple From The Apple". Thanks 7note for sharing your knowledge. Esp the locked octave things which I also was looking into for difficult lines like Opus Pocus which should be up to speed about 2020.

  • Skyblueginger,

Thanks. Funny last line. Somethings will never be in my fingers, but you keep moving forward and enjoy the process. Regards.

  • This is great and you explain it very well. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, you're not only a very gifted pianist but also a very generous one.

  • Thanks raggafury.

  • These are really helpful as are all of your tutorials and other videos. Have you considered putting all the tutorials on a DVD? I would happily pay for this if it is available?

  • alanogthefirst. I haven't compiled a DVD yet. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • I wanted to ask you about how you learnt from your previous jazz instructor as you mentioned he had a great methodology of learning solos off of records. But I guess you have explained this methodology in these 3x videos. Very well explained and comprehensive!

  • You said it came from your first Jazz instructor who learned from Lenny Tristano. One of Lenny's more famous students was Rock Guitar great Joe Satriani.

  • tbcass, Didn't know that. Thx.

  • Thanks! I particularly liked your idea of singing an improvisation before playing it so that a more interesting phrase is developed - though perhaps more difficult to play.

Sometimes I wonder if jazz lessons should be preceded by druming lessons. Being able to divide time comfortably and sense the up beats has been quite a challenge for me, The abba-dabba-do method may be helpful, I'll be trying it.

Thanks again for your tremendous efforts to help us with the music we love.

  • desertlight, I think drummers bring that skill to the piano, a big advantage. Thanks for the comment.

  • wow, this is why youtube is important. I like the "stream of conciousness," which might be the best way to explain "swing." If someone tries to be too exact...too explicitly accurate...then I bet they'd have trouble explaining swing. Thank you for the time you put into this.

  • This is a gold mine right here. Every sentence's got a nugget of wisdom. Very well done, thanks!

  • in my jazz scholl i learned the swing feel with a 'tripleisation' of all. we had to knock the pieces with both hands:

    right hand: first triplet

    left hand: second triplet

    right hand: third triplet

left hand: first triplet of the second quarter note

    etc.

then pronounce an pieces by hitting the notes harder bur still knock all the triplets

did you something like that too?

but that's not quiet right. it's too waltzy, as you said! you explained it better!

  • stocksam, if I understand it, I think it is similar.

  • Wow! I didn't know all that, I just swing by ear! It's not only know the beats, you must feel the swing, that's the matter.

Thanks for all the info! Your videos are better and better!

  • Well...I am BLOWN AWAY!!! What a GIFT you have given. You have opened a door for so many. This is a gift of generosity!! Thank you!
