One problem with your definition of "lebensraum": the doctrine actually predates Hitler's coming to power in Germany by a number of years. It was apparently first coined by Friedrich Ratzel at the end of the 19th century. It was actually a commonly held idea among German peoples during WW1 and after. Even A.J.P. Taylor admits this in the book "The Origins of the Second World War."

Numerous historians have pointed this out. It was hardly a secret belief among Germans.

Unlike Mussolini, who was a fool, Pilsudski was shrewd enough to know forming an alliance with Germany would immediately jeopardize Poland's independence. Even Ciano, Mussolini's Foreign Minister (and son-in-law) was outspokenly against the "Pact of Steel" because after 1938 he realized HItler could not be trusted.

Pilsudski was also KNOWN to have actively sought a military alliance with the UK to offset Germany.
