I have finally just been able to watch this and I am mesmerized by The Trio Bulgarka. I must seek them out now. Hauntingly beautiful. Believe it or not, only within the last year have I gotten Kate Bush's back catalogue so I'd been completely ignorant to the Trio. Thank you Soho!!!
Mike, that's great news! I was a little worried that I was way off the mark by posting this as a response... but I reckoned "this is music that moves me" - and "what the hell" :-) I was at a loss to choose only one song. I look forward to discussing Kate in the future - and perhaps even The Trio Bulgarka :-) (Hope you had a great holiday!)
btw check out "My Beautiful Bulgaria!" by a YouTuber named v1kos. The song (which Stanislava tells us is "Devoiko Mari Hubava") wreaks havoc with those heart strings. I don't know why this music moves me as it does; but it does. It makes me go all mushy and want to place a teatowel on my head whilst I wail and bemoan all the losses in my life thus far, and then laugh about how happy I am to be alive and in a position to make the same mistakes again.
Thank you, Stanislava. I am very sincere about my admiration of this music. I loved some of the music in your favourties - especially "my beautiful Bulgaria!" which I have also favourited. Thanks for that! :-)
That's very kind of you - and don't worry about 'chatting' here. As far as I can make out it is frowned upon but there are no rules against it... so what the heck :-) I'll look for a CD first - because it will contain more beauties ... but if you know WHO is singing this particular version, then you could help me out there! :-D Thank you, Stanislava!
Glad you liked it, Joe. I really love the idea of introducing each other to 'new' music. That's what I love about the musical fraction here on YouTube. Follow one and you get to hear loads of other musicians... for free! :-)
Funny how when you subtract just one or two elements out of something, magic can somehow disappear. I felt that way about a lot of the solo stuff after ABBA broke up.
BTW, I LOVED Sensual World! "This Woman's Work" still gets to me every time without fail.
Your comment must be shorter than 500 characters! Yes, yes, yes. I bloody know!!! Crikey, your favourite YouTube artist strikes up a conversation on the magical elements of music, Abba and the solo works of the former members of Abba and Kate Bush and one of my favourite songs by her and I can't even finish a bloody sentence due to the 500 character restriction!
Seriously: Often the magic is due solely to the exquisite combination of different elements - so, yes - it loses some, or even all, of it's sparkle if a key element is removed. As for the solo works of Frida and Agnetha, I also think the collaboration of all 4 was the key to the magic.
BTW have you heard Kate's Ariel? I don't have the words to describe how wonderful that album is. But how about "Washing maaaaaachine" ;-)
Is that from Kate's early years? I confess I'm very 'unread' when it comes to most of her early stuff, although I have to say her original version of Wuthering Heights is my favorite over the one she did in '85.
If 'Ariel' was half as good as 'Sensual World' then I think I'm missing out!
Although I love Kate's voice before it broke I actually prefer the ending to the '85 version of Wuthering Heights. The double CD Ariel was released in November 2005 - and had been 12 years in the making. It's out of this world!! I defy you not to love it :-)
Guys, I am so bummed - on vacation and have crappy internet speed so can't even watch this video yet. But I'm dying to join in the conversation despite lack of time. I LOVE "Aerial", especially the song "Pi". All the bird calls and such on that disc make for such a gorgeous mood. Can't wait till I can actually watch this vid.
After having talked about it, I played Aerial (thanks for correcting my spelling - d'oh!!) whilst doing the housework. My favourite is Mrs. Bartolozzi - "waaaashing maaaaachhhiiiine". Though I do adore Pi too - obviously! Looking forward to your comments! Oh, I also listened to The Puppini Sisters' version of Wuthering Heights again today. I wonder what Kate thinks of it. I think it's Amaaazing!
I spent just over 7 years working for a retail music store chain here in southern CA, and although I do NOT miss retail, I do occasionally miss having access to all sorts of new music. Radio stations just aren't helpful when it comes to discovering things like what we're discussing here.
Thanks for reminding me that there is more out there than just my reliable old ABBA MP3s.
LOL - well, ABBA will *always* be on my turntable ... did I say turntable? I meant ipod, obviously! :-) I used to work for a CD wholesale company - so, I know *exactly* what you mean. I never listen to the radio nor do I watch much television (and never MTV or anything like that) so I rely solely upon friends to give me music tips. Or upon collaborations - it was Frida from ABBA who got me on to Kirsty MacColl. I think I'll introduce you guys to her one day soon. :-)
I don't listen to radio at all - I subscribe to far too many music magazines and rely upon album reviews, free sampler CDs and recommendations from friends.
I've received very few video responses in my time here on YouTube, and none more warmly than this one. This response alone validates my "Here's A Song" idea. Speaking of which, I need to select a winner... :)
Hey, nice insight on the Trio Bulgarka. Theres really something hypnotic and mystical in their beautifully harmonic singing, I like it... BUT its to be played in short doses anyway, lol! They could just drive you INSANE after a while ;D
D'oh! That would explain a lot. I often listen to the entire catalogue back to back; especially now I've put them on my ipod. The only part of this singing that I'm not to fond of is when they unexpectedly go "yip" as if imitating a small dog that has just been trodden on ;-)
Thank you !!!!

This is great music. If I find some of the croatian, or bosnian ethno music I will send it to you.

That would be great! My partner is Romanian, so he plays me some traditional and gypsy music from his country too. Thanks a lot, Dario.

I might have known you'd like it Liz.. I've not spotted a video of yours yet where I haven't been seduced by the music. Thanks!

:D oh and thanks be you don't know the words/language!!! It probably would interfere w/your 'comprehension' of the music's 'language' LOL
I have a musician to share here I think you'll like ...hehe once I find her in my unorganized messs.
And I have a feeling I'll be introduced to other new sounds (for me, anyway)...on your channel...thx for that!!!!!!!!!

The song from "My Beautiful Bulgaria" - "Devoiko Mari Hubava" is one of my favourite songs together with Strati Angelaki Dumashe.
