I thought a hypernova was when you had a star that was massive enough to create gamma rays that were powerfull enough to dissapate in pair production, this causes the whole star to implode as opposed to just the core (because normally the photon pressure from the core blows the outer parts of the star out) and results in the whole star exploding and not leaving behind a black hole.

For hypernova to happen very large star is needed, those stars mostly existed when the universe was young, smaller and thus matter density was higher. Probably, that there is no such stars in our galaxy, considering its age.

i read a paper in grad school about how a physicist went through the equations and found that a nearby supernova would immediately ionize earths entire atmosphere and the outer crustal layers of the surface of this planet facing the supernova...obviously extinguishing all life on this planet. but I forgot the distant needed for this to happen.
