I hate the fact that the human mind can't comprehend the astronomic scales.... I would love to try and visualize the explosion from a supernova.... But all I get is a nuclear blast :/
I thought a hypernova was when you had a star that was massive enough to create gamma rays that were powerfull enough to dissapate in pair production, this causes the whole star to implode as opposed to just the core (because normally the photon pressure from the core blows the outer parts of the star out) and results in the whole star exploding and not leaving behind a black hole.
educate me please, this might sound stupid, i know Google is there to help me out, but based on your opinions, 'LIGHTYEARS' is number given should be the speed that you should travel given that your travelling as fast as the speed of light..
@i16aj yea im afraid so...but since our sun is pretty much a small star compared to some of the others...it most likely will swell up into a red giant and then collaspe into a nuetron star before eventually given into its own gravity and creating a black hole..though some astrologist think it may not go as quite as that and may go super nova..but one thing is for sure my friend..it still has a billion odd years left so no need to worry..lol
For hypernova to happen very large star is needed, those stars mostly existed when the universe was young, smaller and thus matter density was higher. Probably, that there is no such stars in our galaxy, considering its age.
1.47: "A hypernova is just a supernova that is pointed directly at you" Ummm, no. A hypernova is from a star like a Wolf–Rayet star, with at least 20 times more solar masses than a supernova sun. It is a young, newly formed star and because of its mass, its core collapses directly into a black hole producing the tell-tale jets. They don't have to be pointed at Earth for us to see them either! Then again, this is 2008 upload
OK listen eveyone. This guy has good info, but he missed some things. Forst of all, the gamma ray bursts that come out of hypernovas are so bright, that no matter where you are in the universe, you will eventually see it. I heard a bout a hypernova 8.5 BILLION LIGHT YEARS away, and we finally saw it last year. Indeed, they are the brightest known things in the universe. Second, the explosion is caused by a black hole that forms inside that star. If you want more info, chack out the "Density of a
@chaos9115 Not nessicerly, well you see the closest star that could go supernova at the moment is IK Pegasi which is an white drawf star that is about 150 light years away. @andros4567 Type II SN would likely extinguish life at distances less than 10 parsecs (33LY...FYI α Cen is ~1.3 pc dist from Earth). Type Ia SN would likely extinguish life at distance from 20-30 parsecs, due to their high densities of ionizing radiation, huge flux of x-rays and GeV-TeV, in this variation of SN wrecking havoc on the upper atmosphere... and that which penetrates the atmosphere would likely cause much irreversible damage (e.g. mutations) to DNA in all exposed living organisms
i read a paper in grad school about how a physicist went through the equations and found that a nearby supernova would immediately ionize earths entire atmosphere and the outer crustal layers of the surface of this planet facing the supernova...obviously extinguishing all life on this planet. but I forgot the distant needed for this to happen.

fuck off you want a supernove in our galaxy we'd all be dead.

@SkiminStones actually, a supernova wouldnt kill us a hypernova will.....
