Dark Age Celtic Monasticism was almost polar opposite to this system at first. Bishops were often married with children, celibacy was a personal decision of consciance not a matter of vows, monks' clothing wasn't that much different from average people's, and monasteries were combination missionary stations/universities. Eventually they too got away from Scriptural mandates & gave in to unhealthy compromises with paganism and Romanism, required celibacy & other legalisms, and greed.
There is the funny story from the time of Martin Luther that as he was helping the head of his monastary organize relics that the abbot pointed out that they had ST. Peter's thighbone. Martin replied that two other monastaries had St. Peter's thighbone so that St. Peter must have been an oddly shaped man in order to have three thighbones.
