  • Great men in cruel and complex times.

  • heard this many times

  • I think we all agree that this is anachronistic. Some contributors regret its demise but falsely, in my opinion, claim that it once had a unifying character. I've asked my parents if they or their parents ever liked this music or identified with Aran Sweater republican types. The answer was a resounding NO. My family and many others have always been more influenced by events, culture and ideas from beyond the Emerald Isle. Nowadays so are the majority of the population.

  • Here we go again. Call me a Westbrit because I don't share an irredentist and outdated republican view of the Emerald Isle.

No, mate, you are out of date using these terms. Time to get over the past and start to live and behave in a more cosmopolitan way.

The demise of the Fianna Fail tent and all that it stands for represents the dawning of a new Ireland which is comfortable with being part of the globe and not some backward redneck and cringe-worthy past.

  • @Atruebornirishman You will most likely get what you want. You will reap the rewards of modernity, and, when these idols lie in ashes and shambles, one hopes that you may understand your folly.

  • @sam778395

But they're a bunch of losers. It's time that we Paddies started celebrating winners not extinct languages, lost battles and being the underdog!

We need new ballads to celebrate the Celtic Tiger, the Grand Slam, our nobel prizes etc.

  • @Atruebornirishman The Celtic Tiger was the main cause of our down turn. The Grand Slam? Yea that's smart, celebrating an English sport. Our native language is near extinct because of the invaders to our country. I hope your happy with yourself.

  • @markdaly21

Ireland is still one of the wealthiest countries in the world, largely because of globalisation, i.e. an end to parochial sports, language etc.

I love English sport, culture, tv and the people and do you know so do most of us Paddies of the younger generation.

It's only the old,, warped, anachronistic, irrelevent types who hanker for some mystical, mythical and dreadful past with Dev, paedophile priests, drunken leprechauns and the Dubliners/Clancies.

    Modern Ireland- we love you!

  • @Atruebornirishman don't lose the heritage though be glad you have one. I'm a yank and I suffer from the lack of a cultural identity, we have no actual heritage. you all are lucky enough to have a rich one which goes beyond all of the silly politics. Keep up with globalization, but don't stop speaking gaelic or stop telling stories or you end up like us yanks without an actual identity.

  • @ThatsMrProducer2u

I've just finished reading about Alex de Tocqueville while listening to Johnny Cash, eating my cheeseburger while wearing jeans and planning my Halloween party and wondering where I'll watch the next Boston Red Socks match.

Nothing wrong with being Irish but to say that Americans have no heritage????

  • @makesmiaircurl there's no singular cultural identity, not that that's a bad thing, simply as a white american I feel I lack the shared history, music, folklore, customs, ect. that cultures such as the Irish share. America is a mosaic, but I, and it's safe to say a fair amount of americans, lack a cultural heritage with which they can identify.

  • @ThatsMrProducer2u There are thriving local cultures with their own songs, stories, accents, sayings, etc. in the U.S. (Appalachian, New England, Louisianan, Mid-Western, etc.) that all people in those areas should be able to identify with. Also there are still strong remnants of the original colonial & early Republic cultures which produced many American tall tales, folks songs, Old Time music, and (it's nearest modern relative) bluegrass. Many Americans see this as too "hick" though. Too bad.

  • This and Flower Of Scotland will be on my playlist next Saturday. C'mon my Celtic brothers. Send those Saxons home with their tails between their legs!!!!!.

  • Culloden wasn't fought to establish Scottish independence. It was part of a dynastic war between the Stuarts (deposed in 1688) and the House of Orange and later the Hanoverians. Bonnie Prince Charlie wanted to be King of Great Britain. Scotland would have retained it's position as part of the United Kingdom.

Considering what a lousy general the Young Pretender was (having your army charge through a swamp against artillery is not a good idea) his possible abilities as king are dubious.

  • Rot in hell you Sasanach pig, and hope your rotten Stinking Billy burns with you. You needed us Highlanders to fight your bloody wars for you and to secure your empire. ALBA Go BRAGH

  • Since you have no "dog in this fight" maybe it's a fight you should stay out of. I don't see Ireland being in a hurry to give up their freedom because you think they're too "isolated and unimportant."

Scotland has fought for its independence for over 700 hundred years ...for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule...

The debate isn't over socialism. It's over Scotland having the right to decide her OWN destiny.

  • Speaking as a Canadian, if the Scots can get what Quebec has here more power to them. There is a reason why Quebeckers call English Canadians squareheads. We English Canadians are quite politically ignorant and lazy and the French take advantage of it. They run this country. Though I suspect the English in England are a wee bit smarter. And you wouldn't get "offical bilingualism" there. Gaelic wouldn't take over London like French over Ottawa. Vive le Quebec, stupid Canadians.

  • Tha anti -Scottish independence group seem to have lost sight of the only important point, that Scotland was not a province or a county, but a proud and independent country with a rich and glorious history of it's own , and that the scots see themselves as Scots , not as Britons. Asked the country of their birth 99% answer "Scotland" ,in fact I have never heard the question answered otherwise in all my 66 years. A passport that says "Passport of Scotland " would warm my heart, Alba Gu Brath !

  • Quite... but what does Scotland intend to do with independence once given? How will Scotland remain independent separate of England in the face of EU integration? If it doesn't, what is the point? To have a passport that reads "Passport of Scotland?" I am genuinely curious... not just arguing...

  • I believe that scotland would do most wonderfully on her own, with the pride of country the /scots people already have in ample quantity, they would thrive ,not perish , and would for the first time control their own destiny. Scotland would control immigration not Britain, asymmetrical federalism as we have in Canada where Quebec which has French origins controls it's own immigration and taxation,it might not have to be full independence.A simple change from United Kingdom to United Kingdoms !

  • Again, though, what is the chance that a SNP government would not, instead of following London, instead choose to follow Brussels? The other trouble is with this is that in a Federal system like Canada or Germany or the U.S, Citizens of one state can move between states... what is to stop immigrants (Polish or Pakistani) from simply crossing from England?)

    ---

Anyone with even the casual interest in Canadian politics can tell you that the bloc Q. got the best of the deal..

  • a nice wee watch post 'ore the boarder with rifles would keep them oot i'd say :)

  • And give ME one reason why Scotland should "follow" London? Scots are NOT English. We're supposed to stay under the English thumb just because YOU'RE worried about immigration? Oh, please.

Why can't the English ever admit the real reasons they want to keep control of Scotland?

Macangusagain is right about what the point is. Scotland is a COUNTRY. A country that deserves independence.

  • As a simple perusal of my profile might tell you... I am NOT English (or Scottish) and have no dog in this fight.

    ---

I still think that a Socialist state, (more socialistic than Britain under New Labour) is untenable and will rapidly become as isolated and as unimportant to the general EU as is the Republic of Ireland.

    ---

The point of the whole European project is to limit the independence of the small nations. s

  • The young Stuart did well, invading England before turning north, before Culloden. You're right, there were a few clans allied with Cumberland. The irony...Socts and Irish allied and fighting one another, English in the middle....and all either defending the German prince on the English throne, or trying to depose.

  • chorus

    "Tha tighin fodham, fodham, fodham"

    etc...

  • Although it was a tragedy, it should be remembered that there were probably as many Scots fighting with Cumberland as English. Likewise, there were many English (and French and Irish) fighting with Stuart. It was not really a Scots versus English battle, rather a Jacobite/Hanoverian conflict. Even though I like Liam, the version by Kat Eggleston is much better than this -- you can actually hear all the words!

  • I think it's important the listener knows what the song is about.

  • Brilliant rendition...song was actually adapted as the theme song of former Irish Taoiseach Charles J Haughey, with lyrics by Donie Cassidy

  • I prefer the Corries version but this isn't bad. Great song whoever sings it.

  • thank you very, very much for that.

  • Liam is in great voice & good to hear Liam telling the story of what DID happened to my country at Colluden where we were Buthchered Thanks Liam

  • yes sir, i now that ;D

  • One of my favorite Clancy tunes. Unfortunately you got the wrong lyrics, and if you actually listen to what they're saying, you'll see your lyrics aren't right. But nonetheless, a good song.

  • yes sir ;D

  • Not only our they great singers, they our great story-teller's. Brilliant
