Also, what's beautiful to me is he crosses the line from a previsible being, controlled by scientific laws and programs, to a complex being, which is what some call "having a soul" or something. He frees himself from everything, even from his own stuff, and can fly away.
A critical scene. Replicants have always been denied their humanity because they supposedly have no emotions let alone empathy for other human beings. Here we see Batty empathizing with Decker as he struggles against certain death. "Quite an experience to live in fear, isn't it? That's what it's like to be a slave." Decker himself doesn't realize he's a replicant also. Designed without super strength or agility because they want him to believe he is human with no clue that he isn't.
@montagminott I wouldn't have hunted Deckard in the first place. If I'd gone to Tyrell and learned that my lifespan could not be extended, I'd go out on a rape rampage in my final few days. :)
@IronRooRoo I'm not greedy.Crushing Tyrell's head with my bare hands and letting Deckard drop after getting a good look into his eyes would have been quite satisfying to me.But Deckard would have to do like Wile E.Coyote and bounce! This is non-negotiable!
@IronRooRoo In fact dude, I could never enjoy rape and rampage while Tyrell and Deckard were still alive and getting over! I'd rather rape and rampage their eye sockets.I'd leave women, children and property alone. But that's just me.
@montagminott Well yep, after Tyrell gives me that news I'd rape his eye sockets bad. And after torturing him for twelve hours before finally killing him, maybe then I'd go on a rape rampage.
I wouldn't care so much about Deckard, even if he killed my fellow replicants. I'd just spend MY OWN time as best I could. But hey, that's just me. I'm no Roy Batty. :P
@IronRooRoo Interesting, you'd spend 12 of your last remaining hours , torturing Tyrell(as opposed to a quick but excruciating death). You'd rape the "innocent",yet let a boy who earned his keep, hunting down your fellow replicants live to tell his grand-kids fancy John Wayne stories.Shhhhhit!(phonetically SHEEEE-id ).
@IronRooRoo I mean no offence, and these hypothetical scenarios don't mean a hill of beans. It's just that I've always felt that the of sparing Deckard's life, was the fatal flaw of this otherwise brilliant movie. In that moment Batty went from being a wrathful Man fully deserving of life, to a noble slave deserving of slaughter. The Movie at that point became a morality parable for well behaved slaves.Just my 2 cents.
@montagminott Yep, don't get me wrong I'm not saying your opinion is wrong by saying I wouldn't care for Deckard. It's just what I'd personally do if I was in Roy's situation. :)
I tried to copy the visual aesthetics of this scene for one of my finals at film school. I love this scene in Blade Runner and didn't really do it justice... but do you guys mind checking it out and letting me know what you guys think? Thanks. :) youtube.com/watch?v=YOphFl88U-g
One of the few movie scenes that send chills down my spine and move me to tears at the same time. Even after seeing it dozens of times, I still think Deckard is going to slip and fall. And the fact that Rutger Hauer came up with Baty's speech an hour before they shot the scene makes it all the more poignant..
It's kinda sad to see so many movies/games/etc. blatantly rip-off Blade Runner. And most fail to even come close to how brilliant and ahead of its time this film was. Pray to GOD Hollywood doesn't try to remake this. They'll fail.
replicants lived for 4 years. Humans lived for 80 years. The point of the movie is the struggle of humanity to achieve immortality by creating its own image. Roy is telling little secrets to deckard during the chase. If you see the movie you will notice that what he means is that life is cruel and irrational. And that you if you dont play you just die. He saved him in order to tell him his last words that sum up the endless struggle of humans for salvation through immortality.
"Quite an experiance to live in fear, isn't it? That's what it is to be a slave."
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die. "
"You've done a man's job, Sir. I guess you're through, huh?"
"Finished."
"It's too bad she won't live! But then again, who does?"
@wrmty56413 I agree. When I first saw Hauer's hand reach out and save Ford from falling I lost it emotionally. I didn't know what was going to happen to Deckard, would a floating vehicle catch him? Would he hold on until cops showed up and killed Batty, then pull him up? I just didn't know. Men get emotional over this because, as in war, one's manliness is elevated when you respect and even save your enemies life knowing your situation is lost. Then, as in this scene, your humanity wins out.
@wrmty56413 just one of those scenes aint it? like that scene from on the waterfront. the whole i coulda been a contender scene. anyone a little brother? or an older brother?
@wrmty56413 I'm gay, but besides that, I often cry in movies. doesn't have to do with that clichée of hard man don't cry and stuff. It's just about that.
@peterikarlstad Not existential really. The religious symbolism in this scene IS profoundly hard hitting. A larger than life individual with an old style nail through his hand saves a man who "had a belly full of killing (sin)" from falling into a dark abysmal death and subsequently alters his life? The bird, symbolising the soul flies off into the first blue sky seen in the film? Even the guys' name - Roy - means king, as in Christ the King - well, maybe.
@jilliebeans If you don't know then you haven't watched Blade Runner, and if you haven't watched Blade Runner why on earth are you watching the ending!? Go watch it! NOW! :P
@82hky82 he saved him in order to tell him those words before dying. The outcome of these lines is that humans can create virtual anything they want. But they can create nothing without creating a little "death" along the way. The salvation of humanity is beyond this world. Philip K. Dick is telling us little secrets. And if we notice a little closer we discover great realities that change our world forever. "Its too bad she wont live...but then again who does ...."
@equizaur He saved him because by then Batty has realised that ALL life is precious, even if his own is ending. Making him more humane than an actual human (Deckard). That's the pont of the story, it makes you question what alve truly is if a machine can be more alive than a man.
@Browncoatt22 interesting note, Deckard isn't actually human - he's a replicant as well. But yeah, that was definitely the main takeaway - humanity is defined by actions and morals and not genes. Absolutely fantastic movie, I wish I had been old enough to truly understand it the first time I watched it.
@TheMasalaBalla I believe Deckard is human. That's the whole point of the story. A man is taught how to truly be alive by machines. Putting into question the whole idea of what it truly is to be alive. If you make Deckard a Replicant then the whole point of the story is ruined. So I think Deckard is human, but I know other people disagree. But if you watch this movie with him as a Replicant then it's good, watch it with him as a human and it's a masterpiece.
Still you left out the best part, as he lies there spent & bleeding in the rain, Deckard's thoughts on why Roy saved him:
Deckard: [narrating] I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life; my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-Beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain. Time to die."
...funny how all these people that upload the classic "tears in the Rain" scene speak so highly of it but ALL the uploads are in crappy 240p resolution! FAIL!!!...
Incredible, my favorite film, best scene, tears in the rain. I want that collectors set, all 4 versions. I didn't know Hauer made that up or about kinship. 'all those moments will be lost in time....' Thank you so much!!!! Great!!!! this theme of robots and thoughts was started by Asimov and continued with Data, and this movie. If something artifical has a heart, is it really artificial then? Do androids dream of electric sheep?
Rutger Hauer is amazing ... the "tears in rain" part wasn't scripted and was improvised at the end by himself, Ridley liked it so much it stayed... greatest sci-fi movie ever made , hell its one of the best films in history !
@disengagejam I can't agree more. And as far sci-fi flicks go, it is up there with 2001 A Space Odyssey. Okay, now I'll have to head to the library and borrow this gem.
@oscar6123 -- good choice, but i'd recommend purchasing the collectors set on dvd or blu-ray (i got mine for under $20 ) -- you'll have all 4 versions of the film !
When Roy catches him and lifts him he yells out "Kinship!" which is hard to hear but appears clearly in the captions. Adds a lot to the scene to know that line exists.
This movie sums up what the 80's were all about ... a great period of time where the alchemy was right in about everything ! Blade runner is a perfect alchemy between a great and deep script, terrific music, excellent actors, futuristic special effects, genius director, etc ... That's why Blade runner is so touching !
@BigHashTouraj Sorry for you, mate . Or you never saw the film actually ? , or you didn't understood the story ? , or simply you're stupid ... Almost of the critics found this few minutes the clue of all the film who gets the magic until the very end ...sorry for U , mate ...
@BigHashTouraj Sorry sorry about that ... probably I've made the wrong answer ... let's the magic of the scene goes on. It's so beautiful this scene ! . Bye and cheers
Batty is a combat replicant class A (mind an body high ranked means a shorter life) he easily catch Deckard with his nailed hand in one fast movement. R. Hauer final words are pure acting improvisation and thats why Avatar is far from epic Sci-Fi movies. Just see "Turk Fruits" R. Hauer's best film and debut and don't misunderstand sci-fi is not about expensive fx is about to get out from reality and get closer to humans feels.
This movie wasn't exciting like Star Wars or Star Trek, but it didn't need to be. It was a little boring at times sure but it had an ending you remembered and stuck with you. It made you feel for the characters. And really... what more can you ask from a movie?
@Soliloquy33 I think Ridley wanted the movie to be soaked in little by little. Sometimes, rushing a movie isn't a good thing. Just need to take it in little by little.
I remember watching this when it came out, we were totally blown away. Even Harrison Ford acknowledged it at the time as a possible "cult film".
The sound track was perfect, created by the legendary grandmaster Vangelis - still very popular today within the "New Age" music realm. Perfectly crafted, the music builds slowly in this scene with a final drum beat signifying the death of Roy Batty, who loved life so much that instead of killing his enemy, he saved him.
@crypto2zoology I'm not embarrassed. This scene says so much about what it means to be human, to live and to die. The tragedy of life is worth a tear. Priceless.
What I find interesting about this movie, aside from its amazing visual and emotional impact, is the way the ideas of Philip K. Dick are transmitted to the screen. I have never been able to understand why people claim he is a great writer. Actually his work is almost impenetrable. But his diffident cynicism and tremendous creativity lend themselves to the screen. Thanks for posting and thanks to Rutger for the brilliant ad lib about tears in rain.
This scene was burnt into many an impressionable adolescent mind in the early 80s. Beautiful. Still resonates, coz these days most of us feel like we're replicants.
My theory is Roy Batty, Gaff and Deckard are all replicants. And, Roy Batty > Deckard> Gaff. Think about it, thats why Gaff sends Deckard to kill Roy Batty and the others, because he is an outdated blade runner. Berhaps Gaff, is the oldest replicant model in the movie. The unicorn in this end indicated that Gaff not only knows about his dreams which makes Gaff a replicant, but also that he let Deckard and Rachel get away. He didn't "retire" them and everyone lives happily their remaining years.
One of the greatest movie scenes of all time. One of the greatest films of all time. With 3 of my favorite actors of all time. It couldn't get any better if it tried. Thank you for posting it as a "full length" version. =)
whoa there, thats a stretch. First off, comparing E.T. and Blade Runner is apples and oranges (if you know what that means). E.T. and Blade Runner are both brilliant from 2 brilliant filmmakers Scott and Spielberg.
no offense..but E.T sucks compared to this movie.......Blade Runner has a far deeper meaning about human existence...and is on a greater level than E.T
@konnoman321 I'm not a fanboy belive me. But E.T was for kids this wasn't so theres kinda a big gap there and really shouldn't be compared. you know what I mean?
Me personally, Im not sure that Deckard is a replicant. I mean every time he had an encounter with a replicant he physically got his ass kicked. He wasnt able to clear the gap between the two roofs when he jumped. If he was a replicant then he must be a lower model to the nexus-6 bunch. But then again if your gonna make one a blade runner then shouldnt he be more advanced to deal with them. I still think he was human. But all the clues to say he isnt still have a good point. I dont know lol
In the book its clear he's not a replicant(do andriods dream of electric sheep?Phillip K Dick). In the movie it Ridley Scott made it more abiguious . He said he thought Deckard was a replicant. I think they added the unicorn sceene to put that out there. I think in the movie he was a replicant. I go back and forth on it though. Thats what I good movie will do to you!
I just don´t wanna know the truth. For me Deckard is a Human who falls in love with a replicant: Rachel. All the symbols, signs and mysteries hidden behind the movie´s story is less important than my own point of view. There is not an only truth.
no even if ridley scott finally under pressure just resigned to say deckard was a replicant all movie & specially original version(1981) indicates, deckard must be a human.
Batty's salvation? His first scene IS his dying hand, his 4 yr life-span is just about up. He sticks in a nail to keep the dying hand alive a tad longer (the right hand- not left). Saving Deckard with that very hand itself. (quick close up of that hand to make the point). At Batty's death, that white dove flies from his hands, and up to (in the original film) a patch of BLUE sky.(A rare shot in which a primary color is very significant on the screen) soul symbol? hmm.
What really tripped me out is when I figured out that Gaffe is Commander Adoma in Battlestar Galactica. I was thinking no f**in way I thought he looked familer.
Do women like Blade runner?

Certain ' Roy ' says " Attacked " past tense, as in, have been or he attacked the [star]ships setting them alight near Orion.
He also refers to " Sea beams " as in light refracting off water, in this case reflected moon light as it " glitter[s] in the dark...".

Rutger Hauer is amazing ... the "tears in rain" part wasn't scripted and was improvised at the end by himself, Ridley liked it so much it stayed... greatest sci-fi movie ever made , hell its one of the best films in history !
disengagejam 1 year ago 3
@disengagejam I can't agree more. And as far sci-fi flicks go, it is up there with 2001 A Space Odyssey. Okay, now I'll have to head to the library and borrow this gem.
oscar6123 1 year ago

TheDrLecter 1 year ago
No one ever comments about Batty catching him with his dying hand with the nail through it.
20Avalanche06 1 year ago 4
This movie wasn't exciting like Star Wars or Star Trek, but it didn't need to be. It was a little boring at times sure but it had an ending you remembered and stuck with you. It made you feel for the characters. And really... what more can you ask from a movie?
Soliloquy33 1 year ago
@Soliloquy33 I think Ridley wanted the movie to be soaked in little by little. Sometimes, rushing a movie isn't a good thing. Just need to take it in little by little.
ShadowGunner82 1 year ago
I remember watching this when it came out, we were totally blown away. Even Harrison Ford acknowledged it at the time as a possible "cult film".
The sound track was perfect, created by the legendary grandmaster Vangelis - still very popular today within the "New Age" music realm. Perfectly crafted, the music builds slowly in this scene with a final drum beat signifying the death of Roy Batty, who loved life so much that instead of killing his enemy, he saved him.

@konnoman321 what?? i never said anything about E.T though...??? :-S
filmgeek22 1 year ago
My theory is Roy Batty, Gaff and Deckard are all replicants. And, Roy Batty > Deckard> Gaff. Think about it, thats why Gaff sends Deckard to kill Roy Batty and the others, because he is an outdated blade runner. Berhaps Gaff, is the oldest replicant model in the movie. The unicorn in this end indicated that Gaff not only knows about his dreams which makes Gaff a replicant, but also that he let Deckard and Rachel get away. He didn't "retire" them and everyone lives happily their remaining years.

This scene was probably far more touching than the whole of E.T.
mccarthystuart 2 years ago 94
whoa there, thats a stretch. First off, comparing E.T. and Blade Runner is apples and oranges (if you know what that means). E.T. and Blade Runner are both brilliant from 2 brilliant filmmakers Scott and Spielberg.
And just my opinion-
E.T.-4 stars out of 4
Blade Runner-3.5 stars out of 4
AVGN92 1 year ago
Okay, maybe I was stretching it a bit, there
-I initially compared these two films as they
came out in the same year (1982)
I just find E.T to be too saccharine for
my liking. On the other hand, this
particular scene from BR is even
more touching to me on a deeper
lever.
I hope that clears things up.
mccarthystuart 1 year ago
@AVGN92
no offense..but E.T sucks compared to this movie.......Blade Runner has a far deeper meaning about human existence...and is on a greater level than E.T

I dont know lol
strummerjones82 2 years ago
In the book its clear he's not a replicant(do andriods dream of electric sheep?Phillip K Dick). In the movie it Ridley Scott made it more abiguious . He said he thought Deckard was a replicant. I think they added the unicorn sceene to put that out there. I think in the movie he was a replicant. I go back and forth on it though. Thats what I good movie will do to you!
Rafa38 1 year ago 2
I just don´t wanna know the truth. For me Deckard is a Human who falls in love with a replicant: Rachel. All the symbols, signs and mysteries hidden behind the movie´s story is less important than my own point of view. There is not an only truth.

Batty's salvation? His first scene IS his dying hand, his 4 yr life-span is just about up. He sticks in a nail to keep the dying hand alive a tad longer (the right hand- not left). Saving Deckard with that very hand itself. (quick close up of that hand to make the point). At Batty's death, that white dove flies from his hands, and up to (in the original film) a patch of BLUE sky.(A rare shot in which a primary color is very significant on the screen) soul symbol? hmm.
