You know me n my son found out about geocashing just because I happen to spend ALOT of time wandering woods n such we happend to run into a cannister ontop of the mountain in Iron Mountain Mi so we took some trinket left a note and a little flag from my truck that was 5 yrs ago i think huh... nice review but Id like to know the best one for a trek from upper mi to alaska ? Via boot power =P
REI has eTrex Vista HCx on sale for $149.99 (retail price $250). I bought one yesterday and found my first 3 geocaches today! Love the Vista so far and just wish the wrist strap was shorter. I don't think it was meant to be used as a wrist strap... maybe a neck lanyard?
What a cool thing to do with the kids. I will be going to Uganda soon and Im looking for a hand held for there will this one do it ? looks like an easy to learn unit. Thanks
@scream412001You should look on ebay ,fuck all those electronic stores they are ripping everyone off. I had to learn the hard way, ebay is putting everybody out of buissness, because of one reason only. BETTER PRICE$'S. P.S. fuck Best Buy especially.
@TheFugiapple12 Look on ebay ! Spread the word better prices on everything , and please boycott Best Buy!!!!!!!!!!! What ever you find in there worth buying take a second look on ebay befor buying it , you'll find it for less than half the price.
Good video!....I started doing Geocaching with my girlfriend.. We've been using phone Gps's. (Android and Iphone) Not very accurate..Handheld is the way to go, evidently. I did document our first find on Youtube.. Thanks for the review, I've been looking at this model series..Thanks
@cheapgeek1 while I'm looking at picking up this Vista or the Venture, there is a great app for the Android phones called c:geo that makes the GPS a lot more usable for geocaching. It's still no replacement for a dedicated GPS unit, but we have had complete success with the app so far.
I still find it amazing that this is now so much easier with an iPhone, I can do a search for nearby caches, log visits, add pics, all directly from my phone. Of course I still bring a gps, for where there is no cell signal.
Interesting that you don't demonstrate the compass navigation screen for geocaching, Many geocachers consider it to be the key tool on a unit for geocaching. It makes it so much easier. Follow the arrow and watch the distance count down.
@xlr8rzz stop whining You should be so lucky to get such an expensive gift. What's wrong you don't like going outside? be happy you have parents or a roof over your head ... go do your damn chores without being asked while you're at it .
Fun! Except that is not the Garlough Park cache that you found, is it? I know, because I am "Knowschad". I tried to figure out by the signatures in the log which cache it really was, but ran out of patience.
most will work but just make sure you have one with the pacific area information and not the pacific or americas, but im sure you can download the extras anyways

I found a geocache last year by accident, without a gps, was a bunch of shit and a movie inside lmao... i contacted the owner via internet and he wanted it back but i never gave it to him... LOL geofags
I have the Legend HCx and am having difficulty with it. I am new at geocaching and the user manual is not great. Do you follow the pink line to the cache or do you use the compass, b/c the compass takes me in completely different direction. Went with other cachers yesterday, using the older model legend b/w and found 3 caches in 20 mins where with HCx I have searched 4 times for same cache with no success...any help would be appreciated.
This is an excellent hobby. Land/sea navigation has gotten to the point that it's specialized. Few people know map reading, shooting a bearing or using something as archaic as using a compass.
We used to do that in the scouts, but this is a nice modern spin on a pretty handy skill.
Thata a nice unit. Does it go blank and lock up untill the batteries are removed? I should have saved a little more for a color unit instead of the eTrex Legend (B/W). Seems much easier to read and has more memory and a better cable interface.

Not entirly, sometimes, and we do it all the time with cache we use paper for our puzzles, the search on coordinates is easy on etrex for sure

okay. I found something what will do the paperless 4 me :D
it's called cachewolf it does all the things and you don't need to be a premium member and it loads them as a POI

Just make sure you take the turn by turn off when looking for the cache. The model should also have a compass on it that some people likes to use.
