  • do u have to be a premium member to download caches?

  • How do I get it to go straight to map where it says "go to" and it has option for follow road or off road @214.

  • Great video. I actually picked one up at Frys today brand new on clearance for 49.99. Now I just need to learn how to use it.

  • Great job on the video, thanks for posting.

  • I admire this function where you draw out your routes on the laptop and send it to the GPS. Do you know if any of the etrex has this function?

  • @GeorgiaRVInstitute use the garmin mapsource. click "send to device" icon. garmin mapsource is compatible with autocad

  • You know me n my son found out about geocashing just because I happen to spend ALOT of time wandering woods n such we happend to run into a cannister ontop of the mountain in Iron Mountain Mi so we took some trinket left a note and a little flag from my truck that was 5 yrs ago i think huh... nice review but Id like to know the best one for a trek from upper mi to alaska ? Via boot power =P

  • What is the battery usage you get? How long before the batteries drain?

  • @udupiboy 25 hours battery life

  • good video

  • Good review. Thanks for sharing.

  • very informative and useful. it's a shame you haven't uploaded more since!

  • REI has eTrex Vista HCx on sale for $149.99 (retail price $250). I bought one yesterday and found my first 3 geocaches today! Love the Vista so far and just wish the wrist strap was shorter. I don't think it was meant to be used as a wrist strap... maybe a neck lanyard?

  • jew catching?

    im listening

  • send your kids off into the scrub first...i like the thinking!

  • What a cool thing to do with the kids. I will be going to Uganda soon and Im looking for a hand held for there will this one do it ? looks like an easy to learn unit. Thanks

  • how much would this be?

  • @TheFugiapple12 i went to the other store they were about 200 to 300 bucks for the good ones.

  • @scream412001You should look on ebay ,fuck all those electronic stores they are ripping everyone off. I had to learn the hard way, ebay is putting everybody out of buissness, because of one reason only. BETTER PRICE$'S. P.S. fuck Best Buy especially.

  • @TheFugiapple12 Look on ebay ! Spread the word better prices on everything , and please boycott Best Buy!!!!!!!!!!! What ever you find in there worth buying take a second look on ebay befor buying it , you'll find it for less than half the price.

  • Good video!....I started doing Geocaching with my girlfriend.. We've been using phone Gps's. (Android and Iphone) Not very accurate..Handheld is the way to go, evidently. I did document our first find on Youtube.. Thanks for the review, I've been looking at this model series..Thanks

  • @cheapgeek1 while I'm looking at picking up this Vista or the Venture, there is a great app for the Android phones called c:geo that makes the GPS a lot more usable for geocaching. It's still no replacement for a dedicated GPS unit, but we have had complete success with the app so far.

  • YYYEEEEAAAAHHHHH southrn minnesota baby thats what im talkin about!!!!!!

  • I still find it amazing that this is now so much easier with an iPhone, I can do a search for nearby caches, log visits, add pics, all directly from my phone. Of course I still bring a gps, for where there is no cell signal.

  • can the gps switch from standard to metric?

  • @Iwiehavo Yes. "Units" in the setup menu, and select metric vice statute

  • where can you buy it

  • @Bakugan01

    On Ebay of course

  • holy shit i have a dino just like that i found in a cache today lolz

  • Interesting that you don't demonstrate the compass navigation screen for geocaching, Many geocachers consider it to be the key tool on a unit for geocaching. It makes it so much easier. Follow the arrow and watch the distance count down.

  • i got this for my birthday im 14 it was the worst gift i ever got.

  • @xlr8rzz stop whining You should be so lucky to get such an expensive gift. What's wrong you don't like going outside? be happy you have parents or a roof over your head ... go do your damn chores without being asked while you're at it .

  • @xlr8rzz Dont just say it was the worst gift ever! BUt tell us why it was the worst gift ever... That might help the rest of us.

  • @xlr8rzz give it to me then, it will be the best thing i've ever got.

  • i tried to buy one but best buy is sold out of them

  • any one know af any good water proof gps's to avoid or that are very good

  • I had This Etrek But Without Colour Display!

It Broke It back Like 10 years Ago!!

Soo Sad! IWant it back !!

  • how much does it cost?

  • @kstone6196 About 200 LVL!!

I Dont Know How Much USD it is Actualy !!

  • can anyone help me with a software for USA map download ? I got a etrex C and only shows the freeways.

  • Great vid and looks like the kids are haveing a blast. I'm doing reasearch on what gps to buy. My two boys are going to love this goecaching!!

  • What I love about them is the signal reception, size, and waterproofing.

  • I use the iPhone app for geocaching but it's horrible. I think I'm going to have to invest in a GPS.

  • It's over a million caches worldwide now.

  • Thanks for the review. I have the venture hc and am looking at upgrading to the vista hcx

  • very very good. thank you

  • Thank you! Very informative.

  • how is this gps for geocaching...it can't do paperless...is it still good enough?

  • This works fine with geocache, special made for it

  • well it can't do paperless...

  • Not entirly, sometimes, and we do it all the time with cache we use paper for our puzzles, the search on coordinates is easy on etrex for sure

  • okay. I found something what will do the paperless 4 me :D

it's called cachewolf it does all the things and you don't need to be a premium member and it loads them as a POI

  • Just make sure you take the turn by turn off when looking for the cache. The model should also have a compass on it that some people likes to use.

  • Great review ... thanks for sharing

  • Fun! Except that is not the Garlough Park cache that you found, is it? I know, because I am "Knowschad". I tried to figure out by the signatures in the log which cache it really was, but ran out of patience.

  • I have an etrex summit hc and I want to buy the UK Memory map national parks. If I do buy them can I upload the detailed OS maps to the GPS?

  • no ,, use a Satmap unit for that

  • what kind of GPS device do you recommend for traveling in europe, india and china?

  • most will work but just make sure you have one with the pacific area information and not the pacific or americas, but im sure you can download the extras anyways

  • Thanks for posing this; it was exactly what I was looking for. Well done.

  • will i be able to use this with a free account?

  • yup

  • very good video! just starting geocaching!

  • gukfrytu

  • I have the Legend HCx and am having difficulty with it. I am new at geocaching and the user manual is not great. Do you follow the pink line to the cache or do you use the compass, b/c the compass takes me in completely different direction. Went with other cachers yesterday, using the older model legend b/w and found 3 caches in 20 mins where with HCx I have searched 4 times for same cache with no success...any help would be appreciated.

  • what software are you using for the maps?

  • Thanks for your review. It's very helpful. 5*

  • thanks a lot man u helped me a lot with setting up my gps! =)

  • This is an excellent hobby. Land/sea navigation has gotten to the point that it's specialized. Few people know map reading, shooting a bearing or using something as archaic as using a compass.

We used to do that in the scouts, but this is a nice modern spin on a pretty handy skill.

I use an HC and I have to admit it, it's fun.

  • Thata a nice unit. Does it go blank and lock up untill the batteries are removed? I should have saved a little more for a color unit instead of the eTrex Legend (B/W). Seems much easier to read and has more memory and a better cable interface.

  • Nice little unit. I have the older black and white version. Love the small size. More pocketable than my other 60CSx.

  • I need software to the e-trex vista c topo...anyone has a copy?

  • ya, they still have some of the software on the garmin, com site

  • Thanks for posting...I am a newbie to geocaching (In New Zealand) and I am looking for a device to get started.

It looks like a fun hobby!!!

  • It is. but you're doing the right thing by researching gps units.

  • you are a brave father

  • when you found the box i thought it was ammo in it:) btw cute kids and 5 stars from greece friend...

  • go ahead boys

  • I use the same GPS in the video you see in the video response...

  • I just got the exact same one but in yellow!

  • WATCHOUT: VERY COMPLICATED USER MENU!

its not user friendly at all. unfortunately, there is no much alternative to it.

  • It's like anything really, just takes a bit of getting used to. Spend a day or two getting familiar with it...

  • Great review. Seems like a good product, just not the type I am looking for. Thanks for straightening me out!

  • 0:58 wind almost took that chip away lol

  • Thanks! very informative video.

  • do you have to upgrade the map in order to effectively geocache? straight out of the box, does it have enough streets to find the caches?

  • I got an eTrex Venture HC for christmas, and I love it! The thumb-stick is built so much better than the one on my old eTrex Legend. The color display and high-sensitivity antenna are great, too!

  • Cool video! Now I am super glad I bought a Vista Hcx model-as it appears to be super awesome for geocaching! You are a cool dad too, for finding a great thing to do outdoors with your kids.

  • I just bought a Vista. Thanks! Can't wait to use it!

  • hi there does it tell your live speed i.e mph eg as i'm buying one mainly for marine use? great vid :)

  • On researching the Garmin eTrex Vista HCx at the manufacturers website, the unit does not appear to have a feature for displaying current speed. Also, the unit is waterproof, but will not float if thats important. For more detailed information, I might recommend you visit Garmins website.

  • In searching for a product recommendation for you, I found that the Garmin eTrex Vista (and most GPS navigators for that matter) have a speedometer function. So, my prior remarks were incorrect and I apologize for any inconvenience.

  • Very nice video! Easy to follow! I own an eTrex Legend, although the thumb-stick no longer works.
