I'm sure this song describes how a lot of people feel in Canada and America. Even though I live in a small country town the message is still true. I was a nerdy kid in school who didn't have much money or the women but I've always gotten by with the close friends that I had knowing that what my parents taught me about life would be worth more than all the things that the rich people received.
@brawlins30 You are 14....and who cares...do you think that if you are a kid and hear some kind of music you are "better" than other kids?!?!?!?! JAJAJAJAJA EGO TUBE!
One of Rush's best videos. Very retro yet modern. Such an issue, even in today's schools. Interesting to note that it is Peart, not Lifeson who sang the 'Subdivisions' line in this song.
im 26 and still live in scarborough or the Subdivisions i have seen some videoes that are about scarborough gangs i with there where cool one like this agian
I saw Rush in Jacksonville, Fla. in March of 1994...opening for them was Candlebox. Rush played every hit except this..I kept yelling out "SUBDIVISONS!!!!"..."PLAY SUBDIVISIONS!!!!!!", but alas, to no avail...no SUBDIVISIONS.
well ABBA is in it´s core a folkmusic band or atleast bjorn and benny started as such, Accordion, piano, violin, fiddle, guitar, harmonica are instruments that benny of abba plays as well as composing the 1984 musical "chess" and lots of swedish folkmusicals and mamma mia of course-so dont be too quick to judge others -know your music first!
i dont think rush sees themselves as better musicians than others simply because they know it would be a false idea.
Rush is one of those bands you can actually /listen/ too. It isn't just noise like all too much modern pop fluff. Rush's songs are so carefully crafted that if you tune into every detail, every lyric, you actually come away from their songs feeling like a more enlightened person.
Great. I saw Rush in 1977 The Farewell to Kings tour. I remember when this came out I was sationed in Norfolk, Virgina. I was on board the USS NIMITZ. It brings back memories.
@bobsptg1 Don't worry, they are appreciated, just not by the plastic bullshit mainstream media. If given enough exposure and perseverance on the part of the musicians, raw talent always shines through.
This is me and my best buddy's song. HE COMES HOME TODAY!!! after being away in the navy. We always jam to it. He can play neil better than anyone. I play my synth and sing geddy's part. The only thing I never understand is that at the guitar solo there is no synth. So, they play this song way too difficult like. If Alex played synth, Geddy could just play bass the whole time and not have to use pedals or midi.
@TheBrendoMan Hey, buddy! Although I agree that Rush is more deserving than ABBA to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's just that the next time you emotionally insult ABBA like that, I swear I will cast you to the treacherous swamps of the lice invested internet to kick your scrawny ass! You hear that ma'ma's boy! I ain't got shit in my hair! I'm a dancing queen! So don't you forget it!
@TheBrendoMan ... RUSH is ABOVE that Cleveland shit hole! They don't need hat place to tell them they're good. Ironic though, cuz Cleveland is the city these guys broke into America from!
I was 16 when this came out..I remember hearing it the first time one morning while I was getting ready for school..I can remember just how it felt to be young...at the time I thought I was kind of cool, and had real friends..now I know I was and still am the outcast.
@MrJacknjill12 I agree. I read this comment on another Rush video, it said "Most rock songs are about sex, drugs, violence, etc. Instead, Rush sings about Anthropology, Diversity, etc." That right there should put them in HOF, period. If they can sing about subjects that are much more likeable, that should put them in the HOF. Plus, they have the BEST bassist ever, the best guitarist ever, the awesomest drummer ever, cool keyboard sounds, and SO MUCH MORE!
@martianrum Record company's do not decide who gets in and who does not. The people who decide are complete morons its all music critics that feel like they need to get people in every year. Either that or the bands they choose suck. How do you put ABBA in and not Rush come on.
@InlineFury1 i was watching that metal show with eddie trunk and he said thier are record company execs. that vote, all people inducted get a vote, and yes music critics, i totally agree with you
Perfection on the drums...any kid who aspired to be a drummer around 1984 tried to get this song down lick for lick and when you weren't banging on a real drum set you tapped this out on the dashboard of your car when it came on the radio or air drumming...whatever you had to do to get to be 1/1000th like Neil Peart.
Sometimes we read too much into the song. I'm a product of a small Beach Town near San Diego. I'm sure there are people who hated it, just like my 2 don't like Chesapeake , Va. . Sometimes I dream I'm walking up my street, and can hear my mothers violin coming from the window. Did I wan't to leave ? Sure I did, but just to be my own person, not because I hated it. My 60s neighborhood was full of hotrods, surfers & bikes. The place is still there, but it has changed with time.
So talented, and amazing live. These guys are probably the best three man band out there. Thank you Geddy, Alex and Neil for creative such inspirational tunes.
I went to high school when and where this video was shot (L'Amoreaux CI in Scarborough, ON). Sad part is that they didn't pick any TRUE RUSH fans like myself, only the Drama class for all the roles except for the lead kid (he was an actor). The Drama club fools barely new RUSH at all!! I remember it being a huge deal to us fans, but sadly they only hand-picked the on-camera people. The housing part was filmed in an area called Brookmill where I used to live, and downtown on Yonge St.
@getpoked That's a funny anecdote, thanks for sharing...Unfortunately sometimes productions and band don't have full control over this... Or perhaps they really wanted non-rush fans for the high-school scene...Often times casting for background extras, production will seek and recruit aspiring actors (makes sense they'd target people in the drama club)
@getpoked Being as he is my brother, I can say for sure the lead kid wasn't an actor; just another ignored outcast in the drama class. He did attend L'am and pretty much lived this part for the entire time in Scarborough. Lives a happy life now just outside of Toronto.
@retrospect1983 May i correct you? I'm pretty sure 1974 when their first album was released till now, and so on into the future albums is BETTER than sex.....
I remember watching this video on MTV when it first came out, back in the mid 80's and recall getting absorbed by the video and the song... didn't catch the title of the song at the time and didn't know it for a long time but what really got stuck in my head was the video ending in "Game Over" on the screen of the arcade game. Unfortunately this scene is not included here. One of the best pieces by Rush together with The Trees and Red Barchetta.
I'm a teenager and only recently heard this on a classic rock radio station, but I can't help but feel nostalgic when I hear this, as if I was there. I get the same feeling from "Tom Sawyer", also by Rush. Something about their nerdy epicness is just awesome. They are truly amazing compositions. Rush and many other musicians just kick your ass inside-out. The world would be missing a significant chunk without music. It wouldn't be the apocalypse, but damn would we be depressed.
Eh.... 80's Rush. Amazing drum, guitar, and bass solos and grooves in the 70s. Something about the 80's infected the majority of musicians, and they just forgot how to play their instruments as well.
just heard this song on the way home on the radio. omg it just blew me away and just now found out its rush too many of there songs i have found out were good. time to listen to them let the cd collecting comence
@sonic10shadow No other band can match the musicianship of Rush -- all three of them are masters of their craft. If you ever get to see them live, you won't believe that that much awesome music can come from just a trio. Rush is AMAZING.
@adwatts1966 Live Rush....most amazing thing I've ever seen, The fact that they're so under appreciated with regards to their talent....it's such a shame, but at the same time I love having Rush among my group of friends whilst most people not knowing of them. 'Tis quite the conundrum.
honestly ima fairly new rush enthusiast. im an american and quarter full french. now i get why GSP represents George rush St. Pierre. i need to leave to canadaalready and be with my people!!! PEART is why i drum!!!
rush has so many genres. i listen to this song and get fucking goosebumps all over. i listen to afterimage, and i get so fucking pumped i dont know how de fuck neil does it. <3 you guys
I'm from a Metropolitan City Philadelphia, PA but I can relate to this description of the song being a teen grieve-stricken twice 1st a friend from 7th and 8th Grade, then my grandma passing away from Cancer, being 15 to me was like hell and I was afraid that no one will understand luckily I saw this video on VH-1 Classic and my emotions were released even at quite nights I cried.

Just 3 band members..... EPIC SHIT!!!!!!!

I love this song. Alex looks like he should have been playing with Duran Duran in this video.

Such a great tune. Like most RUSH song's this one brings back a vivid memory. Walking through the snow in the winter, listening to this on a Walkman.

One of my favorites! What a time capsule of a video. The hair, the video games, the jean jackets.

Thank God for RUSH.
