This song "American Pie" is totally fucking awesome!! He does this song better than Madonna's version. Rest in peace to: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper, Whitney Houston, Davy Jones, and more those American legendary artists that we've tragically lost in all these ups-and-downs years in life we share with them all. You all always have a special place in your hometown and great legacy.
Remember singing this at the top of my lungs until my throat hurt and is smiled so hard I couldn't feel my face... I didn't get what the song meant at the time but I am still missing those days... But don't we all miss them??? Like if you agree.
why is music more about looks now a days than talent? The musicians from the 60's and 70's were butt ugly (a lot of em anyway), but I think we can all agree that was the best era of music.
Shouldn't music be more about god given talent and creativity, not how pretty someone looks on camera.

Man memories, I was 14 when this song came out, I smoked a joint and celebrated life, and love, I miss all my friends from my Chelsea neighborhood in Manhattan, they were the best times of my life, love you all !
@Garth53035 study this songs lyrics, youll be shocked how he's talking about a anti-revoluntionist country, and that country is suppose to be america. not an american classic.
Thank you for sharing this, and in such excellent quality. One of the most enjoyable moments in my young life was when two buddies and I got home after a night of partying (at about age 16, in the early eighties, in the Bay Area), and this came on over the SF rock station (either KMEL or KFOG) just before we were going to get out of the car and head to our respective homes in the neighbourhood, so we, instead, remained in the car singing along to the classic tune.
When he talks about Satan he is referring to to Mick Jagger at Altamont. "No angel born in hell (the hell's angels) could break that Satan's spell." The angels were working security at the concert when Meredith Hunter was stabbed to death and Jagger was prancing all around the stage...this song is so beautiful in so many ways. It's not just about the death of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens & the Big Bopper, but the death of the illusion of innocence in America.
@DiogoCysne today is the day a lot of stuff died. The American AAA credit rating, the dollar as the common medium of exchange, the American dream, American dominance in the world and the death of our American culture inn general.
u.u remind me how we went from this piece of wonderful poetry to the shit that exists now pieces of beautiful lyrical history something that can never be truly replicated or replaced how could we go from that to something like black and yellow the music is dead and I cry for it rest in piece music of the generations
In 1971 a now unknown DJ took a piece of each reference made in this song and spliced it into the song. It took about 30 minutes to play and was to me at 24 the history of my life.
@TheOldpoop and thankfully we have lived that era not today and how blessed we are to remember the music of those decades from early 60s, 70s,80s and 90s where the music are very soulful and with a heart! What a sound tract of our lives!!

Catchy song. However, its message is right wing reactionary tripe. It is basically saying that the pure clean emblems of early rock and roll played godly music. After the death of the holy three musicians, rock turned into the devils music. This is illustrated by Mclean's disdainful lyrics directed at Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones.
@TommaDonna The fact you're calling me a simpleton over my views on a music video says not that I am the simpleton, but rather he who called someone else out due to anger and rage from just a very bad day. Have a nice day.
On February 3, 1959, a small-plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, killed three American rock and roll pioneers: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, as well as the pilot, Roger Peterson. The day was later called The Day the Music Died by Don McLean, in his song "American Pie". The plane crash has been called the first and greatest tragedy rock and roll has ever suffered.
Was 13 when this tragic accident happened - We were a generation " lost in space"- heroes didnt dare die - they lived forever WITH US-,- a year later the Viet Nam build up started - 4 years later our president was murdered-10 years after this happened I was flying a Cobra gunship in Viet Nam- killing people by the hundreds- -- All that really happened on Feb.3 1959 was " Reality" saying "Hello"- like many generations before us..Many thanks for posting.
When I was a kid, my friends always hated me for listening to this song and the others similar to it. They would always listen to the boy bands on the radio. They would tease me for this and laugh. Now it's on the radio, and they realize that it was one of the best songs of all time, and still is.
im 14 and i was litteraly brought upto this song, i woke u with it and ent to sleep with it and now i got sme money so i brougt it and im doing the same agian and no body i know has ever heard this song but i absolutley love it :)

@RightWingHunter666 Or people who misclicked or just don't like the music. Most Justin Bieber fans wouldn't even know how to find this kind of music on Youtube.
@atfatw Pop music was not yet invented it was all considered rock n roll in the time of Buddy, Rictchie and JP.
Pop was born from Rock, the earliest instances of pop used as an acuall seperate genre was in the 1960s. modern pop was invented in the 80s it all stemed from early rock n roll.
If you wanted to think that way.
Jackson dying didnt effect rock or metal or rap so its not that signifigant.
Thats stupid way of seeing it lol
The day the music died is legendary others are just tragic
@TexianPrideWith total respect to the memory of J.P Richardson, who was basically a DJ with a novelty hit, and Valens a talent on the rise at the time, from a rock n'roll standpoint, Buddy Holly is really the focus of Mclean's song, obviously.
@TexianPride I'm so glad that someone knows about the background story of this song. especially because I listen to this song today. And today is "The Day the Music Died". Your comment made me so happy and thank you for that. Keep up listening the real music and what more can I say? They are long gone but their music is here for us.
ive loved this song as a child, and it brings tears to myheart and soul. why this has not been remade?i know not one wantta be thinks he she can do it better. 1966 in an old green pickup us-three brothers singing this as loud as we could. Dad was a very happy father that time he passed the house=we squelled and went back to singin. yOU TELL me has their been another time in your life when all seemed right with the WORLD?
I was a junior attending a small New England college. I can't begin the number of times we drank ourselves into oblivion singing this song at the top of our lungs. This is one of those songs that is unforgettable. It's genius is in taking what is by any definition a tragedy, the Death of Buddy Holly, and turning it into a wonderfully happy melody.
There's some personal stuff about McLean in it too. The Levy was a bar in his hometown that closed down, so he and his friends would go to the nearby town of Rye and drink whiskey, so it's not "whiskey AND rye" it's "whiskey IN Rye." I don't remember where I heard that, so take it with a grain of sodium chloride.
Whenever I listen to this song, it reminds me of my father and all the times I spent with him when I was little. He loved this song.. and I love it, too. Makes me cry now when I listen to it.
@huthicle . American Pie was written 9 years before Lennon died. It's about Buddy Holly and the plane crash that killed Buddy, Richie Valance and the big bopper.
me: Hey dad, im out to kill 18 people.
dad: WHATTT? NO!
me: its ok, i have 2,193 people. also they disliked american pie.
dad: take my gun.

I somtimes wonder how many fans of this song knows what its about and how fewer are familier with the heros of the songs music
Ladies and Gentleman I ask you to look in to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper.
Please they were the fathers of modern rock.
There deaths are argueably the most signifigant event in music history.
If you love music look in to hollys Peggy Sue, Valens Come on Lets Go and Big Boppers Chantilly Lace.
Do it for them your modern music is there legacy you owe them

@TexianPride I seriously doubt the deaths of bopper & company were the most significant event in music history
atfatw 1 month ago
@atfatw The day the music died effected the world.
I said argueably meaning some people might agree some might not.
I and most people who know music history know that The Day the Music Died is world famous it devastated music and millions mourned.
Elvis, Jimi, Joplin, Morrison, Lennon all signifigant, none matched there deaths though
TexianPride 1 month ago
@TexianPride these 'some people' you always hear about are the stupiest buttheads
that have ever lived on this planet, the Classical music world was not devastated nor was pop music, whatever thats worth.
atfatw 1 month ago
@atfatw Pop music was not yet invented it was all considered rock n roll in the time of Buddy, Rictchie and JP.
Pop was born from Rock, the earliest instances of pop used as an acuall seperate genre was in the 1960s. modern pop was invented in the 80s it all stemed from early rock n roll.
If you wanted to think that way.
Jackson dying didnt effect rock or metal or rap so its not that signifigant.
Thats stupid way of seeing it lol
The day the music died is legendary others are just tragic
TexianPride 1 month ago
@TexianPrideWith total respect to the memory of J.P Richardson, who was basically a DJ with a novelty hit, and Valens a talent on the rise at the time, from a rock n'roll standpoint, Buddy Holly is really the focus of Mclean's song, obviously.
17865329 1 month ago
@17865329 Buddy was the established star, so Its not surpriseing the song would focus on him more.
However J.P was a very talented man, he was a riseing star, and I believe he could have been somting.
Sadly his career was only 6 months long, hard to tell if he was just a DJ with a Novelty song or a star in the makeing.
I think Holly, Valens and J.P were all tragic (not sayin you dont think so)
I think that most see them all as equally signifigant.
There deaths has been immortalised

ive loved this song as a child, and it brings tears to myheart and soul. why this has not been remade?i know not one wantta be thinks he she can do it better.

Let's weed out hate in our hearts and souls, and become worthy of occupying the American Dream and grabbing that slice of the American Pie.
weedouthate 4 months ago
There's some personal stuff about McLean in it too. The Levy was a bar in his hometown that closed down, so he and his friends would go to the nearby town of Rye and drink whiskey, so it's not "whiskey AND rye" it's "whiskey IN Rye." I don't remember where I heard that, so take it with a grain of sodium chloride.

@huthicle . American Pie was written 9 years before Lennon died. It's about Buddy Holly and the plane crash that killed Buddy, Richie Valance and the big bopper.
