That's simply incorrect. Type "Batman" and "Orson Welles" into Google, and you'll find numerous accounts of his interest in the project, and why it never got made.
I just looked it up, and the best that this can be filed under is "unknown". However, the fact that the story mentions the Riddler being cast when the character was not created until a year later makes me lean towards thinking that you may be correct.
There's a great novel called 'The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay' about two fictional comic book creators who create 'The Escapist' a Batman/Green Hornet/Houdini hybrid. Eventually it becomes really popular in 1940/1941 and they meet Welles at the Citizen Kane premiere, he suggests interest in a Superhero film but it never goes anywhere. Really is the comic 'What If' to end all.
Very interesting What If story about Orson Welles and if he got the rights to do a Batman movie as far back as 1946. Had he been given the opportunity to be the first to do a film of DC Comics' greatest superhero, Welles would have gone on to be one of Hollywood's best actors/directors during that time. Not just for Citizen Kane, but also for movie projects like this.
No, the Millar article was a prank that he posted online a few years ago, complete with concept art. Google "comic book urban legends batman orson welles" and you should get it.
Anyone interested in a copy of this trailer: I am making it available for download via Limewire. Search for 'Orson Welles Batman' and you should find it. Film is a bit over 1.6GB though!

In a parallel universe, this is the best film ever made.

The bat Bruce saw here as inspiration was - as much I could see it right - a Franquet-flying dog, a pretty big one amoung the batspecies.

Edward G. Robinson would have made an awesome Penguin.

This would have been the greatest movie ever made. Orson should have actually done it.

Welles never considered a Batman film. Get over it.

Though, Orson Welles was probably the only director who could have done justice to say, "V for Vendetta".

It´s a shame, that would have been epic. "Batman-an Orson Welles film."
Nice...=)

It's clips from over films. But at one point Wells was going to do a Batman film, but never took off.

Very cool. Didn't Frank Miller invent the whole "Mark of Zorro" thing?
nelipotfootfree 2 years ago
Good, but one small quibble... It wouldn't have been a WB picture. Warners didn't own DC until the 70s, and back then Welles was with RKO (?)
wookie72 2 years ago
theoretically you could argue they had to do it at warners' to get edward g.!
j43ms 2 years ago
Good point, although Dietrich was with Paramount at the time. It would probably have to involve someone being on loan.
Have you read the original Mark Millar story about this? He cast Gregory Peck as Batman, which is perfect.
wookie72 2 years ago
yes, it would have cost a few bob to involve paramount, rko AND warners.
i'll check the mark millar story, sounds interesting. was it an actual planned version?
i can see peck as bruce wayne, but i'd get someone like woody strode to double for him in punch-up scenes!

Sweet job, One interesting thing is that alot of the early Golden Age (1938-1945) Comic artists were really influenced by Citizen Kane
especially Bob Kane, Bill Finger & Jerry Robinson three of Batman's creators.
But there were lots of others as well
Will Eisner who created The Spirit and countless others were all impacted by Kane to an extent.

You did a very great job , on this trailer from a movie that was never made, but could have been.
Must have taken time to do, made as if Orson did it(which he did) GREAT EDITING
I am very much interested in getting a copy of both parts.
Please let me know , if you have a copy on dvd or the old vhs
Thanks

Obviously a fake from the first second, since Columbia Pictures used own The Batman movie rights during the 1940's.
