Probably their best song, but yes i agree the video cxould have been better. At least they could have made it in some african safari location or something like that. But they are still amazing!
This has to be one of my favourite songs of the 80s and the one I most remember. Unbelievably great song! They should've shot the video with the band playing outside in the African desert though, that would have really suited the song.
@hackit1234 You must be twelve. This song is a little less than 30 years old and there have been plenty of music videos of just the recording in progress, especially from that time period.
@cradlelover23 I think the story behind it is that he wanted to go to Africa real bad but couldn't and so he wrote a song about it. So the idea here is that he's "day dreaming" about it. Hence the globe and being in a library where he's probably reading books on Africa. Make a little sense, now? haha At least, that's my interpretation based off why he wrote this song. :D
@cradlelover23 The reason this song was made was that they heard about Africa and the problem that exist there, The drummer and keyboard player I believe were the writers they had seen a documentary about it, And they even knew people would just think things like "Just some white boys singing about Africa, never been there blah blah blah" Up to my knowledge they did make a trip to africa since then, But i could be wrong.
@cradlelover23 after reading your post i watched the video 10 times. im not sure what its trying to say, but i think hes trying to find the book with the torn page of which the corner he has. when the book is burned, i think it symbolizes he will never "do the things we said we'd do", as the song states. but i dont know. thats what i got out of it. good song though.

And the moral to the story, kids??
If you ever find yourself in a library in Subsaharan Africa, beware of random, spear-throwing natives!
WTF?

My favorite song of all time. Everytime I listen to it, I hear something new. It is so relaxing and serene.

The song is about reuniting with a long lost lover than with the dark continent per se. It is a pretty romantic song. So lovely.

I have always thought this song had concerned about AIDS epidemic in Africa or the poverty and drought of Africa. How wrong was I.
