Man that belt thrashing brings back some memories when my dad used to whip me with his belt he also had the same build and style of clothes as shep Shirt tucked in, Blue jeans and boots
My only (ONLY!) complaint about this movie is that they couldn't find a bad ass-looking native American who can say his own lines. What's up with that?
I worked with Native Americans and my daughter is 50% Blackfoot. Most are good athletes and I loved them. The ones I knew had great sense of humors and were smart people
I love the look on Shep's face and the one word answers. If you are able to run this part in slow motion you can see very plain the stunt man used for Steve Buscemi.....when Shep tossed him from the bed
that is one mad big ass native american....he beats the shit out of buscemi and the black dude that knocks on his door.....oh man, this movie is such a classic.
@IoSonoUomo. Yes there are. Minnesota is Lakota/Dakota land and still is, however the Ojibway relocated there long before the European arrival. Minneapolis like Winnepeg has a large Native population. Also, the American Indian Movement- AIM was founded in Minneapolis. I know this because I'm Ojibway.
@powerslave710 not trying to give you a full report...but this movie was basically about a bunch of dishonest people trying to trust one another in a staged kidnapping...but everything falls apart...people involved either died, or got arrested and never cashed in on any of the desired ransom money...
shep beat him bc buscemi ran his mouth and that resulted in that nosy cop questioning him...shep was angry bc he naturally didn't want to go back to jail...it's not that complex, dude
@powerslave710 the coen bros' films always get high ratings...personally, i never saw the high appeal of their movie, "the big lewboski" but fargo was just a great dark comedy...the dialogue was authentic and entertaining...the acting was flawless...and the storyline was cool...there really isn't any deep underyling symbolism...it's just a pretty solid overall movie

I worked on the postproduction on this and the Coen's thought Shep's voice was not demonstrative enough so they had Bill Macy dub over his scenes since they did not have anybody else to do it. If you worked in the industry you will find this happens often.
I find that very hard to believe because it sounds like Steve Reevis' actual voice. Yeah, clearly some of his dialogue was added in the editing room (most notably during the belt whipping), but that was probably because the Coens weren't completely satisfied with the scene. Dialogue is often added in the editing room.
Shep Proudfoot is what we refer to as a BFI, BIG F&*CKIN Indian! Love the way they wrote his string of profanity, been so angry myself you can't say something fithy enough to express how angry you really are.
First scene where i honestly felt the guy was beating someone like someone truly pissed off, not movie drama. I'll say this, I'd think twice about cutting that guy off on the freeway.
Anybody ever notice all of Shep Proudfoot's vocalizations are all dubbed in? Even his "yeps" and "nopes"....but especially all of his cursing during the beating...all dubbed in.

bagonmyhip 2 years ago
Well, if in fact you're telling the truth then, I must say, they did a really good job of duplicating the actor's voice.
Must be interesting working with the Coen Brothers; they're two of my favorite filmmakers!
Beale64 2 years ago
Shep's voice was dubbed by William Macy in post-production since his voice wasn't menacing enough.
