  • Which Airport is it? It's look nice!!

  • The last time I flew on a DC-8 was about 1988, a Delta flight from Miami to Little Rock. I remember being surprised that the cockpit had been modernized and had some flat screen displays, it was not all mechanical gauges.

  • I worked for Sky Chefs in MKE in the late 80's. I saw a guy take a DC-8 and took it almost straight up. It looked like it was standing on it's tail. Wish I had a camera. I never knew the big jobs could do stuff like that!

  • Great video, fantastic sound!

  • Ahh. The days of classic 4 engine jet liners. Never forget those beautiful planes.

  • @TheJesseMD there still a lot of 4 engined airliners around, 747-8, Avro-Rj, Bae 146, airbus a340's, a380's, and posibly more just cant think of their names. but the old was quite nice but was loud and dirty and not as comfy as todays planes, thomson are offering hd entertainment and broadband internet access on their boeing 787 dreamliner from january 2012

  • So UPS doesnt use Dc8s anymore !? :(

  • are they her original engines?

  • @hargohargo2 The earlier DC-8s mounted turbojet engines or early turbofans (the model was JT3D if I remember correctly) which were much more slender, while the latest models like the one in the video were equiped with more efficient and thicker high-bypass turbofans.

  • @hargohargo2 they didnt look like them, looked like they'd be replaced with newer cleaner ones.

  • If u could put jet engines on a stork it would look like this ...great machine..

  • One smooth take off.

  • the 2nd sexiest commercial jet next to the 787 :P

  • I find it extremely sad RIP

    :(

  • P&W JT3D-7???

  • @ositamisha No, those are the CFM-56 engines.

  • they stole the design from XENU

  • @pietzeekoe This is the greatest comment ever posted in the Galactic Confederacy.... well, at least on YouTube.

  • :( :( :( Sad

  • it really gets to people like me when you see beautiful flyable aircraft get dismissed :'(

  • @youngglasskid Yeah but they are replaced by more advanced aircraft that are considered air worthy !

  • was very sad wen Aeromexico retired there DC9/MD80 family last year

  • One of my fav moments to be had around September in Tucson Az was to watch the 7PM depature of one of these birds from TUS around sunset. Now the only freighter that stands out is the 5PM arrival of the FedEx A-310.

  • Ah, so this is the plane that Xenu, the Galactic Overlord used to transport the alien Thetans to earth 75 million years ago. Yes, many people believe this. Tom Cruise does. I dont know whether to laugh or cry. Hail Xenu !

  • @stayjit1 Yeah, but Xenu's interstellar DC-8 had no 'fans' so it was not nearly as cool as the real thing.

  • Do you live in Louisville? I live in Lexington, home of the dead Bluegrass Airport.

  • God, she's a sexy bird. I nearly cried when I saw this, so sad to see them go. I'll just have to purchase one later in life, have it re-furbished. Thanks for this.

  • @VIR092 4 GE GEnx-2b engines, new wing and interior and avionics and u'll be sorted

  • Got that right. Last of the classics.

  • @aviationwingnut so all the DC8's for UPS are retired now? How about the 727s?

  • @NIGHTWHMAN I'm nearly sure that FedEx still flies the 727. I'm not too sure about UPS. The US Postal Service may still fly them also, as well as DHL. But, I'm just guessing at that. I do think nearly all of the DC-8's are now retired. The last time I flew on one, it was a United flight and the Captain told me they weren't going to bother with updating the cockpit due to the plane's age. That was in the early 80's as I recall.

  • CFM engines give these planes 13,000km ranges! Compare that to the 4000-7000 of the Conways or JT-8d's!

  • thats a nice sounding plane ....thanks for posting..

  • The Dc-8 is the best aircraft ever!!!!

  • @ZMOA2006 787 dreamliner is the best ever, phone calls allowed onboard, hd entertainment onboard and broadband internet access with WI-FI, LED Lighting and new filter systems to get rid of jet lag, special systems that detect turbulence and iron the bumps out well in advance, state of the art composite fuselage, engines and wings, dimable windows, larger windows than any of todays airliners. it takes a lot to beat that dont you think?

  • @guitarplayerforu those wings espesially are crazy strong

  • Wow! When I was travelling every week on prisoner escorts, my favorite aircraft back then was the DC-8 " cattle car".

  • These updated DC-8's were among the prettiest of the UPS fleet too me. And as others have noted, the engines sound amazing. I used to watch these things all the time in Ontario, California back in the mid to late 80's.

Those are CFM56 series engines right?

  • those engines sounded very nice, clean and new

  • @TheRclementefan21 thx for watching!

  • @Jon5700 this was a good video BTW thanks for subbing

  • @TheRclementefan21 They are retrofitted CFM 56's, the ones used on Airbus A320's and 737's

  • @TheRclementefan21 It's because in the 1980s, a bunch of DC-8s were re-engined with more modern CFM56, as shown on the two UPS DC-8s in the video. Wikipedia says a total of 110 DC-8 were converted.

  • those engines sounded very nice, clean and new

  • What a shame to see those birds go.

  • What a beautiful bird.

  • Comparing the DC8 to the A340 is wrong. These are cargo lliners not passenger liners.

  • @jrkeen01 They were once in passenger service with, among others, Delta and United. My first flight was on a Delta DC-8 refitted with CFM56s. I wish the videographer had zoomed in to get the registrations of these planes. These are sad flights, going to the boneyard to be parts planes or worse, to end up in some third world shithole.

  • They will be missed.I started for Emery Worldwide in 1990 and remember the DC-8s.

I am still with UPS-SCS as a driver.

  • wow i thought it was much smaller

  • I used to fly United Airlines Chicago - New York on super dc 8. And I'm still alive.

  • I used to do load planning for UPS' DC-8s at Boston Logan (BOS). As old as they were, they were reliable workhorses that paid for themselves a dozen times over. UPS replaced them at BOS with Airbus A300-600F freighters(sometimes substituting a 767-300 or 757-200 PF depending on the time of year). My 1st flight on a 4 engined jet aircraft was on a United DC-8-71(Super 71) flying from Orlando International (MCO) to Chicago O'Hare (ORD).

Farewell old friend-you will be missed.

  • Worse aircraft I ever been on. I used to dread when I had to get on a dc 8. Noisy and they shook alot. I was going to p.r. on one flight and I swear everyone on the plane was either crying or praying, I was talking to this young gal and I knew I was scared and wondered if she was also. I'm not a big mcdonnel douglas fanatic

  • may very well have seen one of these hauling out of DSM over the Christmas rush a few years ago. Would love to have heard with the original engines RR Conways or P&W Jt3C - earsplitters! The last new DC-8 left Longbeach CA in 1972 or so - these two have greatly surpassed the original lifespans. (CFM-56? I think are what these were carrying) End of an era that started these ships in 1960!!

  • Bunky, oh yeah - the original 'stovepipes' on these would pierce the best headsets!

Faster than anything now, though, as they'd redline it all the way, coast-to-coast, as that's where they were most efficient.

And re-engined in the 80s, they kept going for dang near 20 more years. Great, classic, airplane. Lotsa character, that one.

  • Nice catch, sad to see them go!

  • UPS DC-8 is looks like A340...Beautiful aircraft

  • Except the Diesel 8 was a much sleeker aircraft. You are very correct in that the 340's resemble the 8. A classic absolutely.

  • they will be missed

  • great aircrafts!

  • So long fair soldiers!

  • What Camera?

  • WHAT THE FUCK YOU GAYD UDE O.O

  • Long Live the DC-8!!!

  • all depens on the tail #.but to the moron who thinks it"s a dc-8 with airbus engines, you don't have a clue do ya.those engine are in fact cfm-56.the pylons we're moded for these by camcorp starting in the late 70's.

  • You are right, lol. There's no such thing as "Airbus" engines, or "Boeing" engines for that matter. There's only GE, PW, RR, and... IVAE (which is GE and PW I think).

  • IAE (International Aero Engines - A Conglomeration between RR and PW)

    :-)

  • I flew 2 AA jets out to Roswell a few months back, must have been 20-30 of these jets parked there.

  • Ive heard from several mechanics that DC8s are always in for maintenance. Is that true?

  • It probably is, because it's such an old plane. It's from the 707-era I think. It's a good thing to see that they're still flying after this much time, show's their good build quality.

  • The DC-8 may look similar to an A-340 but they are designed a lot better, the vertical stabilizers don't fall off the aircraft in high turbulence.

  • Awesome to have it back up Jon! 5*

  • man the dc-8 and the

    a340 look just alike maybe

ups should order some of those

    lol

  • That was either a -71 or a -73. The 72s had shorter fuselages. Been to Roswell, what a sad place :( Kmentt you're kidding...right? I worked on UPS 8's for 13 years. We all miss them here at SAT. Now we're stuck on MD-11s or A300s...what turds.

  • Moron.

  • I doubt anyone would spend a few hundred million dollars to make a "fake" plane.

  • Dude...go pop some smart pills and then come back and take a closer look at this plane.

    Ya damn Donkey!

  • Airbus engines lolwut

  • Is that a DC-8-72?

  • BAX international still using them in US, as well as African International, another cargo carrier.

  • Long live the DC-8!!!

  • looks kinda like an A 340

  • The 340 is an 8 on steroids!!!!:):):) The 8 rocks. the bus doesn't.

  • Agreed!!

  • GReat plane ;(

  • its really sad when they retire great aircraft like F-14. hey u guys no Boeing postpone 787 first flight so many times, now I'm starting to put trust in other aircraft

  • there it goes!

    great plane

  • Bye bye birdie... Great video. Thank you.

  • I always find it sad when they retire aircraft. Especially when they retired the F-14. :(

  • @legendofwayne There are still F-14s flying.................... in Iran though :P

  • @gt5004life Yeah, if they have enough working parts for them, that is. XD

  • gr8 looking planes. i will miss them :( haha

  • very good plane I liked it better than the

    B-707, I was DC-8/43 flight attendant late 70's and 80's

  • 707 was an Icon, I liked them as opposed to the DC-8

  • 200th Rating! LOL

  • Such a pretty plane, I've always liked the Stretch 8. I live close enough to Ontario California to see them departing.

Is UPS flying and DC-8's anymore?

  • There's an Ontario in Cali? Wow! I live in Ontario Canada. Except my Ontario's a Province (State) not a city. LOL

  • ///RANDOM FACT///there is this place called tom's down the street from ontario airport. best chili cheese burgers ive ever had

  • No, UPS retired all 44 DC-8's. They may have been good planes, but they were a pain to load and unload.

  • Great moment in history!

  • What a great looking plane!

I remember seeing Air Canada's DC-8s here at YYZ.

    Thanks for Posting!

  • grand mom !!!

  • hey mangood vid i was just wondering y u like UPS so much thanks

  • LOL, Why are you so obsessed with UPS?

  • they still fly, no need to retire them, these retirement flights should be done on simulators when the aircraft won't fly anymore! just kidding

  • Very nice video!!

  • lol computers which would handle that will be aviable in 100 years

  • Very nice stuff man. hey I know a tuber in Kentucky and now two!! Thanks for sharing...

    RR

  • I see you really like UPS Jon. Great videos!

  • hey nice vid they were like the 707 and is up getting a380s

  • how did u find out about this

  • Nice Video Jon. Great camera work.

  • Nice video Jon!! There goes a classic plane, to the dumps i bet.

  • I've seen a UPS DC8 at Philadelphia airport in April 2009.

  • that may be your last to see them

  • Great footage, this is a great aircraft. Too bad one of these aircraft for UPS was destroyed in a fire at KPHL.

  • What's gonna happen to them at Roswell? Will they be scrapped/recycled or just sitting in the desert thinking of their olden days?

  • hopefually they will go to a museam

  • Both, as well as the possibility of being fixed and flown for another company, depending on how much more life the plane has in it. Considering that fact that these babies are around 40 years old, they'll most like be used as scrap metal and spare parts.

  • what a beautiful aircraft!!!

  • Thanks so much for subscribing and Great job on the video you made the perfect angle of it.

  • Incredible... It's such a beautiful aircraft. Great footage should be lucky it's on film.

  • Comment removed

  • when i started watching i expected the plane to be animated lol

  • Excellent footage, Jon! Interesting to see a DC-8 from UPS. Faved!!

  • there aren't many dc8 vids in HD on youtube.

    this vid is unique =)

  • i never new there was a dc 8 o.0

  • There's still UPS A300's and DC8's flying out of KBWI every morning.

Is it just these DC8's that are retiring or is it the whole fleet?

  • probably just these. He would show a 50 min video at least if it were the entire fleet xD

  • btw so did they discontinue all their dc8's

  • Theres something about this plane that look modern....... Whne did this plane come into produuction

  • Jon, how did you know for where to where was the flight? Do you have a radio or something?

  • he knew some ups pilot

  • They still use(used) DC-8's?

    I thought Airlines didn't use DC-8s anymore?

  • They do on some poor or cheap airlines but is rare to see one on UPS.

  • DC-8, gone, but not forgotten

  • this gonna be rear video for years

  • Haha plane spotting

  • Remember to do the flight in the bahamas

  • AWESOME!

  • wow

    thats one big pane!!
