The last time I flew on a DC-8 was about 1988, a Delta flight from Miami to Little Rock. I remember being surprised that the cockpit had been modernized and had some flat screen displays, it was not all mechanical gauges.
I worked for Sky Chefs in MKE in the late 80's. I saw a guy take a DC-8 and took it almost straight up. It looked like it was standing on it's tail. Wish I had a camera. I never knew the big jobs could do stuff like that!
@TheJesseMD there still a lot of 4 engined airliners around, 747-8, Avro-Rj, Bae 146, airbus a340's, a380's, and posibly more just cant think of their names. but the old was quite nice but was loud and dirty and not as comfy as todays planes, thomson are offering hd entertainment and broadband internet access on their boeing 787 dreamliner from january 2012
@hargohargo2 The earlier DC-8s mounted turbojet engines or early turbofans (the model was JT3D if I remember correctly) which were much more slender, while the latest models like the one in the video were equiped with more efficient and thicker high-bypass turbofans.

One of my fav moments to be had around September in Tucson Az was to watch the 7PM depature of one of these birds from TUS around sunset. Now the only freighter that stands out is the 5PM arrival of the FedEx A-310.
Ah, so this is the plane that Xenu, the Galactic Overlord used to transport the alien Thetans to earth 75 million years ago. Yes, many people believe this. Tom Cruise does. I dont know whether to laugh or cry. Hail Xenu !
God, she's a sexy bird. I nearly cried when I saw this, so sad to see them go. I'll just have to purchase one later in life, have it re-furbished. Thanks for this.
@NIGHTWHMAN I'm nearly sure that FedEx still flies the 727. I'm not too sure about UPS. The US Postal Service may still fly them also, as well as DHL. But, I'm just guessing at that. I do think nearly all of the DC-8's are now retired. The last time I flew on one, it was a United flight and the Captain told me they weren't going to bother with updating the cockpit due to the plane's age. That was in the early 80's as I recall.
@ZMOA2006 787 dreamliner is the best ever, phone calls allowed onboard, hd entertainment onboard and broadband internet access with WI-FI, LED Lighting and new filter systems to get rid of jet lag, special systems that detect turbulence and iron the bumps out well in advance, state of the art composite fuselage, engines and wings, dimable windows, larger windows than any of todays airliners. it takes a lot to beat that dont you think?
These updated DC-8's were among the prettiest of the UPS fleet too me. And as others have noted, the engines sound amazing. I used to watch these things all the time in Ontario, California back in the mid to late 80's.
@TheRclementefan21 It's because in the 1980s, a bunch of DC-8s were re-engined with more modern CFM56, as shown on the two UPS DC-8s in the video. Wikipedia says a total of 110 DC-8 were converted.
@jrkeen01 They were once in passenger service with, among others, Delta and United. My first flight was on a Delta DC-8 refitted with CFM56s. I wish the videographer had zoomed in to get the registrations of these planes. These are sad flights, going to the boneyard to be parts planes or worse, to end up in some third world shithole.
I used to do load planning for UPS' DC-8s at Boston Logan (BOS). As old as they were, they were reliable workhorses that paid for themselves a dozen times over. UPS replaced them at BOS with Airbus A300-600F freighters(sometimes substituting a 767-300 or 757-200 PF depending on the time of year). My 1st flight on a 4 engined jet aircraft was on a United DC-8-71(Super 71) flying from Orlando International (MCO) to Chicago O'Hare (ORD).
Worse aircraft I ever been on. I used to dread when I had to get on a dc 8. Noisy and they shook alot. I was going to p.r. on one flight and I swear everyone on the plane was either crying or praying, I was talking to this young gal and I knew I was scared and wondered if she was also. I'm not a big mcdonnel douglas fanatic
may very well have seen one of these hauling out of DSM over the Christmas rush a few years ago. Would love to have heard with the original engines RR Conways or P&W Jt3C - earsplitters! The last new DC-8 left Longbeach CA in 1972 or so - these two have greatly surpassed the original lifespans. (CFM-56? I think are what these were carrying) End of an era that started these ships in 1960!!

It probably is, because it's such an old plane. It's from the 707-era I think. It's a good thing to see that they're still flying after this much time, show's their good build quality.
That was either a -71 or a -73. The 72s had shorter fuselages. Been to Roswell, what a sad place :( Kmentt you're kidding...right? I worked on UPS 8's for 13 years. We all miss them here at SAT. Now we're stuck on MD-11s or A300s...what turds.

Bunky, oh yeah - the original 'stovepipes' on these would pierce the best headsets!
Faster than anything now, though, as they'd redline it all the way, coast-to-coast, as that's where they were most efficient.
And re-engined in the 80s, they kept going for dang near 20 more years. Great, classic, airplane. Lotsa character, that one.
