Oh it's so nice to hear this song without that crappy fake echo they used in the 50's reissues that lasted for decades. I sure played this record to death and dreamed and romanced. There will never be music like this again.
It can't be impossible to get the tom and jerry version of the manhattan serenade. Maybe someone can ask WB for it, or maybe someone can use pieces of the song in this clip and reconstruct it or so. Plz put it online if it works. Or contact me
@Harryhoodz The movie recording version was re-done. There was no vocal either...VERY clever to use a Tommy Dorsey tune to accent the Johnny Fontaine character...While historically, there is NO connection to Sinatra getting the part in "From Here To Eternity" THAT way! FS actually remained friends with Tommmy Dorsey and even worked together in 1956 at The Paramount Theatre in NY!
I think I'm correct in saying Jo Stafford was barely in her 20's!!! when she recorded this. And that wonderful Dorsey trombone!!! Thank You very much.
Everyone and his brother and sister recorded this gem but it's inexplicably little known today. Dinah Shore had the hit record, I believe. I love her recording, and certainly love the great Jo Stafford's version, but I think Helen Forrest did the definitive version. The melody and lyrics are SO evocative of Manhattan in the 1930s and 1940s. But just try to sing it! The range involved is Olympian!
@svendiamond Chill, bro/sis. It's on spotify under Jo Stafford's name. And yes, indeed, the Dorsey ver is umpteen times better that the Godfather ver - lord knows why they didn't use it outright, but even the bloody syncopation is wrong. But then, 'I AIN'T NO BANDLEADER!'.
@svendiamond Sorry, misread yr 3rd line. Movie version is certainly newer, clearer, and there are differences (no strings), but (despite what IMDB says) I have never thought moviewas TD's band - he recorded Manhattan Serenade in '43 and I don't think he revisited it- either it's a TD tribute band (like under Sam Donahue, who took it on in the mid-50s after TD's death) or a studio orchestra playing Dorsey's arrangement. It isn't on the soundtrack album, since it was just a tag, wh is annoying.
@wpl955g Ah, yes... it must be a studio orchestra playing it. Sucks that it's not on the soundtrack... oh well, we have this recording. I've been jamming to it for a few days now! ha!
@svendiamond Funny you should say that, I've just transcribed the chords (more or less) - from G in the instrumental to C# in the vocal, with that 3 bar turnaround between where the rhythm section drops out... Now if I can just arrange the damned thing for the swing band I'm in...
just to show you that I'm not a hard-hearted man, that it's not all dollars and cents... She was beautiful, she was innocent... SHE WAS THE GREATEST PIECE OF ASS I'VE EVER HAD... AND I'VE HAD IT ALL OVER THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!
@bkMatelot The "Godfather" had a lot of great period stuff - the art director of that movie really captured the feeling of the period (40's) very well - the music, decor, locations, manner of dress, attitudes, etc. He took advantage of a number of real NYC locations (restaurants, hotels) that were very much of the 40s period that had survived into the early 70's.
nah man....godfather when he goes to california....this is it...this is the song they just do the intro boys....this is it....you gotta watch the movie.
Your gonna have some union troubles, my client can make them disapear. Also one of your top stars has moved from marijuana to heroin
Are you tryin' to muscle me?
Absolutely not!
OK lemme lay it on da line for you and your boss, whoever he is,Johnny Fontaine never that part! I don't care how many dago-ginny-wop-goomba-greaseballs come outta da woodwork!
I'm German Irish
Well lemme tell ya somethin my Kraut Mick friend, I'm gonna make so much trouble for you, you won't know what's hit you!
@666DILLINGER no, i've been looking for the godfather version for a while but was reminded today that i'm gonna seriously look this weekend. if i find it i'll email you it. same for anyone else on here :)
such a beautiful piece. this is truly the one song i could listen to over and over again. the beginning intro/instrumental, such a beautiful piece of music followed by the singing of a beautiful voice and woman.
Now you listen to me ya smooth talkin' son of a bitch! Lemme lay it on da line for you and your boss whoever he is, Johnny Fontaine never gets that part! I don't care how many dago-guinea-wop-greaseball-goombas come outta da woodwork!

Mr Woltz I am a lawyer, I am not threatening you
I know almost every big lawyer in Noo Yawk, who da Hell are you?!
Wonderful Song ! Close your eyes and you can see Mr. Woltz, telling Tom, "Ok, my Kraut Mick friend, You tell your Goomba Boss, I aint no bandleader, yeah I heard that Story !!!' Beautiful !!!!
Great song, but not the same recording as from the movie. No strings and no trumpet hesitation as in the wonderful recording used in the film. I've been unable to track down the exact recording yet, so I'm still in therapy, bkMatelot! No arguments about the Quality of THIS recording from me; it's still great!
Shut up and listen to perfection, ya bunch of blabbermouths.

Is this the actual version that is used in The Godfather though? For some reason I remember the melody being played with more brass instruments
