S.W.E Shift at 0:52 made my mind collapsed like soufflé hit by a black hole. If this sleight can look that good, I should pick up my deck, Erdnases book and then lock myself up in a cave for 20 years practising just that. ^_^"
Why are all these people saying stuff like "Ohh its just "this" move "here" and "that " cut "there". Unless your craving attention or recognition that you know some sleights, You fail to realize that, THAT is exactly the point. If you can fool someone with the simplest or basic moves, then you've done your job. Most of the simple moves get great reactions from the spectators...you can do a great magic trick with a false shuffle and a double lift...Its all in the "Presentation."
How does Jay (when he's doing ACTUAL riffle shuffles) square the deck up so cleanly, quickly, and neatly? When I do it, the cards take about 5 or 6 more seconds to square up than normal and the bottom 3 of 4 cards get all stuck together. Thanks in advance.
@JochemsKristian yeah i noticed that too also hes in boogy nights, and mystery men, he pops up in quite a few movies and in those movies theres always someone else that does a magic trick in the movie even if its just in the backround.
So strange to see Sam Elliot with out his famous mustache. I wondered why he shaved it off for this movie? I wonder what would Jeff Foworthy look like with out his mustache?
Anybody can learn the flourishes or a move or two here and there... but ricky jay performs with such finesse and elegance that it is simply beautiful.
How is that 'obvious'? To a layman, the process appears quite regular (at least when they it is being done by an expert operator), I can assure you that.
I love this clip and this movie...thanks for posting. However, I never could understand how Ricky Jay can have mastered so many moves but still has a real ugly second deal (at least in this clip).
what i was saying is in order for the camera to be able to see whats going on from the angle it was at he had to tilt the cards at an un-normal level (so the camera has a clear view) and this angle makes the second deal harder
But most amazing is that he can second deal, bottom deal and the third one that is the hardest, which I just forgot XD center deal I believe.. I don't remember
Actually strike deals are easier do than push-offs, at least in my opinion. Strike second deal and Benjamin Earl's bottom deal are probably the easiest false deals.
And Jason England is maybe better in gambling moves, otherwise he is nothing compared to Ricky Jay.
I think Jay is more better with gambling themed stuff, but I surmise it's a matter of subjectivity. Do you think the Erdnase second deal grip/method is useful and good?
@superchef78 in this video hes using a dealers grip which is the way marlow often did it except deeper in the hand(masters grip) but as far as grip the only people who give a crap are magicians watch all the ways lay people hold the cards dr elliots deal were all from strattle grip and even though there rarely used by anyone they look great.
@JochemsKristian what are talking about strike seconds and bottoms are much easier to learn than pushoffs or kickouts, why the hell would he do a greek deal in this vid, or centers i know he does suedo centers in other vids but thats just because they happen to looks better that the real deal, its for entertainment not for education, ricky jay probly can do centers, but even if he cant, its kind of a pointless move unles your realy a card cheat.
It's in the video information on the right of the screen - 1995 movie "The Ranger, the Cook and a Hole in the Sky," starring Sam Elliott, Jerry O'Connell, and Molly Parker
Of course there is editing, it's a movie. But the editing was not done to facilitate the effect of what he did, just to cover all the actors reactions. I can tell you this from fact, Ricky Jay could very very easily perform the four ace production, the five hand deal, and then the next four ace production, right there in front of you after each other.
after the guy did the cut, I am almost sure that ricky did a "pass" you card guys out there knwo why I am talking about right??? And I am pretty sure that there wasn't any editing, that's true skill
Take brian tudor "generation extreme" for an example...Cheers!
I don't think he did because the cut he did before he aparently did the "pass" was the Vernon cut but he doesn't finish it off by cutting the bottom to the top so he leaves the deck stepped for the other gut to cut at that point. Sorry non magicians if you can't understand the jargon but thats kinda the point. You card guys know what I'm talkin about right? :)
Yes I do. A similar method is explained in Erdnase, I believe it is under the heading/caption, "To indicate the location for the cut." To those who are arguing the sentiment, "It was a false cut", it wasn't. In actuality, it was a true cut. A false cut is a cut that IN ITSELF retains the order of the pack (or at least some stock/portion).
@superchef78 No, all I'm saying is he started off by doing the Vernon false cut but instead of completing the end part of the cut he stepped the deck in order for Jerry O'Connell to finish it.
I'm not saying he isn't a genius but remember this is from a movie not a live show or TV special, meaning that there could be numerous edits and setups to make this look better
Quite easy, quite easy. People who make "Quite easy" comments; "Oh, I can do that..." "That's nothin..." show their insecurity. Hey, direct us to your card magic videos.
One thing though... to keep his hands soft.... does he use Palmolive?

@superchef78 Just a matter of practice. You need to shuffle the cards over and over again until you get it

Actually , he can't do the center deal.
The second and bottom deal are not THAT hard to learn, especially push-offs.
Also, i don't see him doing the "greek deal", wich would complete the arsenal.
He is still a master though... look up Jason England, he is a modern Ricky Jay, but better.
