CFL bulbs are superior get over it you stupid people, after all your silly old inc. bulbs will soon be illegal ha. Green is the new thing.....I enjoy every single one of my cool cfl bulbs lighting my home and enjoy having low energy bills and a great piece of mind helping save the planet.
I suggest that if and when we are compelled to buy these great energy savers (which are only produced in China) we should pack up all used bulbs in a box, trot them down to our local EPA office, and leave them there for them to dispose of.
The average household has 50 light bulbs, with an average life of 10 years. Each CFL bulb contains 20mg of mercury, so the mercury waste from one household is 1 gram every decade. With a toxic TLV of 25 microgrammes per cubic metre, that is potentially 40,000 cubic metres of toxic mercury vapour.
There are 30 million households in the UK alone, so that represents 30 metric tonnes of mercury released every decade, enough to pollute over 1000 cubic kilometres per decade.
just wondering of you realize that if you break one of these bulbs, you have to pay a few thousand dollars to properly get the mercury cleaned up.....well at least that is one mother had to do, the bulb broke in her baby's bedroom.
Flourescent lamps have been getting broken for decades in peoples homes and other places before this "mercury scare" came about. the mercury is the size of a pin head. you get more mercury in your system from eating fish.
yes, this is true, but the point i was making was that if it happens in a child's room, extra measures must be taken to clean it up. mercury is more harmful to babies, and pregnant women (well, the babies inside anyway). when i was preggers, i was told to stay away from certain fish (due to mercury levels) and not to clean up broken energy saving bulbs...but whatever, i don't really feel the need to explain myself but i did anyway :p
You are correct. I wouldnt want any baby to be exposed to even the slightest amount mercury. In truth I prefer old incandescent bulbs, but the government is cancelling them in a few years. Compact flurescents will be the only thing available..
@FarangBalls im with you on that one. I prefer incandescents. However, compact flourecents are not going to be the only choice of lighting. In fact, there is no actual ban in light bulbs in the US.They're making more efficiency standards in them and MANY incandescent bulbs will meet the new standards such as the Halogen bulb. Also, incandescents under 40 watts, over 100 watts, flood lights, specialty lights (such as candelabra and globes), rough service, colored and 3way bulbs will not be banned

Let me try some numbers:

For what it's worth, you don't even need the meter. Just put your hand on the bulb and feel how much heat it is generating.
