just have a question. what is your opinion on that new to be released Dave Smith tempest. i am thinking on getting either the one you have used or that Dave Smith. it's quite costly tho. You think the drum machine part will be similar to yours?
i can see some amazing beat slicing and some really nice glitchy IDM stuff on this machine... i am looking for something to create my own glitches and slice drums... i have an mpc1000 but not quite sure how i could do it...
@ThePhillips85 There is a lot of gear out there and this is something that I saved all summer for and it was worth every pennny. I just got a Monomachine to go with it and holy @#$% am I blown away. Endless possibilities.....

To end the debate on what is better, hardware or software.
With a computer, a large majority of electronic musicians will employ several applications, whether that be two sequencers rewired with plug-ins or one main sequencer running several plugins etc. Basically, in this situation you are not only trying to mix the sounds in your work, but also all the sources you are getting your sounds from.
Software applications/VSTis etc, are all coded differenly, and as a result sound....cont
.....either better, worse or just different. Ultimately, it is the fact that they are different that makes mixing sound a more difficult process.
With the amount of options available, computer based electronic musicians are spoilt for choice, which can negatively affect the creative process, rather than have a comparitively limited pallet of sounds to develop a sound that is our own.
Less is more, and restrictions can breed great creativity. All this adds up to 'sound quality'
why can´t some one re-build this drum machine here so we can use it as a instrument for native instruments reaktor 5??? please... is there a genius who´s able to do it? this sounds so cool here... best drum machine of the world...
I am after one of these as I love the Monomachine so much, but is it worth me getting the latest model as I already have the latest version of the Monomachine? I've heard the original one had issues with the outputs, but damn, you can get it for near half the price second hand. Any ideas?
i always thought that grooveboxes wont be good to make IDM with because they dont have enough possibilities to control several tracks at one time and change thge patterns fast enough.i hav the korg electrive EMX which is a nice groovebox for making all other kinds of electronic music.but compared to his its just a toy i guess ;(
I think one of the things that's really important for IDM is the ability to play with loops and stutter them, chop them, stuff like that.
Once you get a machinedrum UW sampling itself and then retriggering the loops, the possibilities are pretty endless.
As for your emx, it's a great machine with a great sound, but for IDM you'd be better off with the ESX electribe... I have been using one of those for hip hop instead of an MPC for about 6 years. I would NEVER trade it in for an akai.
Sounds fun, but am I the only one here who prefer the capabilities of a lets say Gobox drum machine from Reaktor? What does this machine do that my gobox couldnt? I can say loads of things Gobox can do that this cannot though, but hey, this is a fun toy no doubt...
One thing you will never get from Reaktor its the sound quality this machine has. Working with vst plugins is not even close to work with hardware....... and this machine is a bomb......
I love the machinedrum mostly because it's great to work with. However, the machinedrum isn't hardware in the classic sense (analogue), it's a dedicated drum computer. Plugins CAN sound just as good and some do, in my opinion.
@xpressunith dont; kid yourself, it's an S&S based unit, there is nothing you can do with this that you could not replicate in the software domain, in fact, the DSP power of a desktop loaded with apps pisses all over this thing, you could absolutely achieve more interesting results with a computer. This box appeals to a particular type of user so I can see why some would be interested, personally I could think of better ways to spend €1000.
With this, the OS/sequencer, synth, and control interface were made for each other (literally), which makes the music-making experience better.
So yes, you could replicate the same sounds, but not necessarily make better music (in fact, I would argue the advent of computers/software has hurt electronic music - most of my fav electronic albums are from the 80's and 90's).
@ballersack I think it's a cop out to blame technology for the drop in quality, blame the lack of invention and imagination in the electronic dance music scene, more imitators than innovators out there now, but there are artists/musicians in other musical domains doing fine with computer based DSP. This box is essentially designed to rehash exactly the music you mention, music from the 80s, the period that EDMs foundations are pretty much built on.
@xpressunith the machinedrum and reaktor are both just software running on a microprocessor. There's nothing inherently better about a digital synth running on a processor stuck inside some little box over one running inside your computer. Now a real analogue synth, that's a lot harder to match with software.
@usernameunavoidable in older digital instruments such as the DX7, the cheap d/a converters add a different quality to the sound, with aliasing and other digital distortions doing their thang, but in modern equipment with high-quality converters the only difference between hardware and software is the interface and hands-on approach.
@xpressunith I used to feel this way -- and I'd still concede that the tone of a hardware modular beats almost any sound in pure timbre alone -- but listening to people like Tim Exile have changed my opinion greatly (Youtube up "Mushroom Santa" or "Don't Think We're One" for reference). Many VA synths (hardware or otherwise) suck in the sound quality department but Reaktor is amongst the exceptions.
Thnx for the info but i honnestly believe that most of the great results you listen out there are due to post production in good studios. You can even send them a crappy track with shity quality and they´ll do miracles.
All i say is that after years working with software i know.......by experience......that rhe sound quaity is not the same....or even close!!!!!!!Some people think the oposite and i respect that.......
i there.....iam xpressunith but my other youtube account has been hacked........
Just to say that you should have more respect with who you talk to man......ignorant is a very strong word to call someone you don´t know!!!!
The thing i wrote is my opinion and if don´t agrre the best you can do is follow @Anarchosyn example and send some usefull info about this subject!!!!!
if you dont know the difference between analogue and digital circuitry, and you are involved in music production, then i would say it is fair to say that that person is ignorant.
there isnt any 'opinion' to it. its science, and its facts.
the machinedrum sounds great. but it is digital. it outputs 16bit at 44Khz.
nothing magic about it being in a 'box'. my computer is in a box also, and outputs a far higher sound quality.
Yeah. Im so tired reading that software synths do sound just as good as hardware.. Doesnt make any sense at all for me. That said. Some software synths has incredible sound. Im having a big problem using my hw with ableton. The recordings just sound awfull compared to when the synth ius connected directly to my speakers. I just cant find any answers for it. Is it possible to make a recording in ableton without loosing any quality?
@xpressunith Reaktor has it's merits, so does the machinedrum, but one should never think one is better, they have their fair share of positive and negative sides.
No guys this isn't a sampler this is a real deal synth based drum machine, the machine is priced at the range of 2000 bucks. It can perform glitch type music flawlessly with the amazing analog type sounds and modern if you prefer.
Can you get the controller signal out to use it as a sequencer? I have a Vermona and i'm wondering whether you could play this and also use it to trigger the Vermona.
one could build an imitation in MaxMSP, or perhaps reaktor. But youd get none of the hands on control, the sound engine would be different, and it would take an extremely long time. Your synthesis algorithms would probably fall short, too.
No. I don´t mean it this way. I mean, Native Instruments just should try to create a emulation, so the sound goes the same paths and in the same type of way. This will sound of course different, but that´s great. Its not about creating the same sound, but it´s about to create the same way you can program beats trough knobs and stuff.
I bought the UW MKII a year ago thanks largely in part to this video. And what a fantastic piece of engineering this is! I consider it a piece of art really...the best kind, functional :D
I worked at the venue (Bologna) where Autechre played last year here in Italy. Rob Brown was using a Monomachine, while Sean Booth played a Machinedrum.
That's it. No computers or other stuff.
Just a mixer and the two machines...
I've actually bought the machinedrum two days ago, I just can't wait... Then I've got a Mac, a bass and I'm looking for an Akai mpc 2500. I'm really into stuff like Boxcutter/Barry Lynn

@klikk0 To get good quality recordings your audio interface has to have good quality inputs. Are your levels good, do you have proper gain-staging?
Also, if you don't set your sample rate and buffer sizer properly in Ableton, you may get lots of clicks or distortion when recording.

Soooooo sick. I need to get one of these.

Can you get the controller signal out to use it as a sequencer? I have a Vermona and i'm wondering whether you could play this and also use it to trigger the Vermona.

I woke up with the same question this morning ...
Are you using samples ?
jdelgoulet 2 years ago
can you use this to make your own beats like on an MPC.. or is all the buttons your press already pre made tracks that you are just putting to gather.
Im trying to decide what kind of equipment i want to buy but don't know why i would want this machine!

A W E S O M E !
Ive been looking at getting a hardware sequencer / synth for a while. EMU XL7 was top of the list. BUT THIS!
Can I ask, how is it for controlling other synths?
The X0X interface is something ive grown up with. This just looks aces. Great sound, well done :)

why native instruments don´t create a software-emulation of this drummachine here?
konjunktion26 2 years ago
one could build an imitation in MaxMSP, or perhaps reaktor. But youd get none of the hands on control, the sound engine would be different, and it would take an extremely long time. Your synthesis algorithms would probably fall short, too.
MachineGunBallad 2 years ago
No. I don´t mean it this way. I mean, Native Instruments just should try to create a emulation, so the sound goes the same paths and in the same type of way. This will sound of course different, but that´s great. Its not about creating the same sound, but it´s about to create the same way you can program beats trough knobs and stuff.

this is fckn cool, freqc ! i will buy u one.
its a great machine and art , YES.
