  • My only criticism of this otherwise beautiful performance was that he could have been a little closer to the microphone. The orchestra tended to drown him out in places. Otherwise, it was wonderful.

  • Muito bem.Bravo! ...

  • @improvvisamente1 I think music is more to be heard and enjoyed than watched ??? and criticized if he holds a notebook or not.....relax, enjoy and do not make much fuss about it......love from Peru....country prodigious in tenors since back in the 1930s with Alejandro Granda and others like Luis Alva, Enesto Palacio....and more to come.

  • This is a lovely performance from Florez... sometimes I feel he's more suited to oratorio than opera.

  • @flaze3 I agree

  • @improvvisamente1 Then I feel vindicated :)

  • saw him in Vienna, and Garanca ,too. just breathtaking. these x-mas concerts in Vienna are worthwlke a trip there.

  • does he make a mistake just before the end on the first of the last two 'servus'? - he is singing in B flat which is unusually high (its normally in A for tenor), and, instead of going to the E flat he sings two D's on the 'us' of 'servus' - never heard that before, maybe a special version : ) anyway a lovely voice , very expressive and beautiful legato. Yes he should know it by heart as I'm sure Domingo does but often the music is held or just there as a prop : )

  • If you notice, the choir is holding music as well. Maybe he is holding it so as not to alienate them.

  • As a Catholic I know I read all the hymns at church or elsewhere, I don't know anyone who memorizes Latin so I will let this go...

  • beatiful panis angelicus thanks....

  • was is really a christmas or the new years concert?

  • x-mas in Vienna, not to be mixed au with the new-years concert in Vienna. which is more dedicated to "typical" Viennese music, Strauss, Lehar, Lanner etc.

  • Here's the second and last verse you almost never hear:

    Te trina Deitas

    unaque poscimus:

    Sic nos tu visita,

    sicut te colimus;

    Per tuas semitas

    duc nos quo tendimus,

    Ad lucem quam inhabitas.

    Amen.

  • Here's the first verse:

    Panis angelicus

    fit panis hominum;

    Dat panis caelicus

    figuris terminum:

    O res mirabilis!

    Manducat Dominum.

    Pauper, servus et humilis

    Very short, book not required.

  • i have the lyrics

  • he needs a text?

  • What's wrong with that? :)

  • it is a very well known hymn in the Catholic church that someone from a Catholic culture such as JDF might be expected to know

  • I know that it is a very well known hymn. But as a singer myself, I know that you can't possibly remember all well known hymns.

  • I will by the way say that he should have practised some more, so he could get more in to the performance, instead of looking in the notes all the time :)

  • It is really strange that he holds the notes in his hands. Watch Panis Angelicus with Elina Garanca, Concert Dresden, she is singing free.

Of course the voice of Florez is wonderful - with notes in hand or not :-)

  • it's so high!! this versions

  • that's most likely cuz he's a high tenor!

  • Juan Diego Florez = ♥♥♥ x347!
