These songs are to busy and incomprehensible to be brutal. I think the problem with this type of metal is that there is no discernable rhythm, the tempo never really changes, and there is virtually no space in the music. It's like one long cacophonous sound with someone shrieking over it. A better example of good "extreme metal" musicianship, I would say, is Cannibal Corpse. They manage to NOT be monotonous (at times).
Lol i remember the first time i stumbled onto a bm vid and started talking shit because i didnt understand. hahaha
But i lovez allz goodz metalz whether it be cannibal corpse sfu deicide burzum immortal dimmu megadeth pantera you know....prolly gonna catch hell for that but i dont care COME TOGETHER METAL COMMUNITY!!!! RULE THE WORLD!!!
are you joking? black metal is EXACTLY supposed to play this way. raw, unpolished and cacophonous is exactly what bm is all about. I don't understand if you are just provoking here or if you're only too young (or naive) to understand. I suggest you to read some books like LORDS OF CHAOS, you'll get the point. I also listen to a lot of tech death metal but bm is something completely different (i'd rather use the term "opposite").
@koripley It's not supposed to necessarily be "brutal." Black metal is all about theatrics, sonically and visually. You have clearly missed Quorthon's point in making this album.
Nocternal Obeisance reminds me of some very dark, possessive ambient music from Silent Hill somehow. I don't know, that's what I always picture everytime I give this album a listen.

This is the music necromancers listen to in nocturnal rituals. It just always makes me think of black and white movies with skeletons and wizards.

Metal is not always about musicianship.

... first off, this is SUPPOSED to sound that way.
if you don't like it, then you can go listen to your cannibal corpse.
.... and its not ANYTHING close to "extreme" metal.
true black metal is supposed to sound this way.
