  • I hate tri coat BS

  • I don't really get the difference between Primer, Filler, And Sealer ?? Could you help me please ?

My car is down to bare metal, I shot Epoxy Primer on it, Then 2K Acrylic ( primer i guess ? ) , but what is the sealer ?

    Thanks you

  • @MrJordyOL Sealer is used to have a good coating before you go into your top coats.

  • @MrJordyOL Thanks for watching. All of the different primers can be confusing. But like game... said it is to provide a good uniform coating to help with hiding before basecoat. I have a detailed guide that may help you to prep a car. Visit CollisionBlast(dot)com/AmazonBooks Thanks for watching

  • @ButlerCollision Thanks you very much for your answer ( thanks you game.. also ), i get it now, So the sealer is not obligatory right ? Yours books seems really interesting ..

  • @MrJordyOL Correct, you do not have to use sealer. Only if you need help hiding the color underneath. Basically for hiding. Thanks for watching.

  • holding the spraygun so close can make "lines" in the final product. These guys have a lot to learn.

    Great vid

  • Hey I am planning on painting my mustang all black how many coats of the color do your reccomend? What does overlap mean?Is that the type of paint being used or something?

  • @jsmooth181 The coat of paint needed are until you fully hiding. This could be 2 to 4 coats. You do not want any light spots showing. Overlap in the amount one coat is overlapped with the next spray pattern. You want to overlap each pattern half way of each pattern.

  • parabens muito bom esse video ...

  • @pixolin2 muchas gracias

  • U should be walking length of car not doin panel by panel u end up with build up of paint were panels meet

  • Any body still using metal cups is way behind upgrade to plastic lids and liners 3m product and wow guy in vid cannot paint

  • I give you some advice about your application! 1 = It seems you are applying your base color with a lot of air pressure! why is cloud that takes the paint, 2 = water based application always starts from the bottom up! If you start you can generate upside breeze on the underside of the base characteristics of the water passes this!, 3 = two coats of color is more than enough for that and apply a separate background color and painting always begins the outlines of the capo .. Greetings!

  • im about to paint my 75 chevy caprice convertable this weekend,do i paint it with top up or down.that color is similar to what im gonna paint it.by the way, nice job .

  • @DunkRider662 Thanks for watching the video. I would have the top up. This will give your masking paper or plastic something to lay against. Thanks gain for watching and let me know if you have other questions.

  • im intrested in this trade but i hear there's dangers with the fumes over a period of years even with proper safety equipment, mask ect. is this true? Im real keen for this type of work

  • @prod929292 If you don't use proper PPE it is dangerous. However, new technology keeps improving the hazards. Low VOC, HVLP Guns, Waterborne Paint, etc. Also more vinyl wraps coming. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any other questions.

  • I was wondering if you took the car back to bare metal or if you just roughed up the original before you laid down the primer?

    Thanks

  • @GLPlumleeIV If the paint is in good shape, not peeling or cracking, or if the paint is not too thick, over 12 mils, you can sand the surface with 400 grit and shoot your primer sealer and paint. Thanks for watching.

  • i see you are using very low presure for best results

  • @rashlaninburhan Yes, low pressure produces less overspray, which can land back onto the surface causing a dry appearance. This is an Iwata gun, which does not take much pressure to atomize properly. Some guns may use a little more, but I would try to keep it as low as possible. Most hvlp guns are 20 to 28 psi. Experiment with it and see what works best for your spraying technique and the gun you are using. If the pressure is too low, you will get heavy orange peel.

  • good video!

  • @buyojj Thanks for watching. I just upgraded my channel to the new YouTube look. Let me know what you thing:) Thanks, Donnie

  • I notice when he is spraying the door or the fender, he passes over to the next panel and then returns. cant this cause a start up spray blast on the unwanted areas.? It could make the coat on the door too heavy if the front of the door is overlapped too much, Please explain. Thanks

  • @62imperial62 Thanks for watching, when you are realigning your gun to make the next pass, you will need to trigger you fluid trigger. If you let off the trigger half way, you are only spraying air. This will eliminate the heavy mills on the edges. Donnie

  • Hi can you please tell me what you mean when you say wet coat or full wet coat??

  • @RAJSTA81 medium wet coat is a even coat that is not too wet or glossy. Full wet is heavy, thick, and glossy. Thanks for watching, Donnie

  • how much base do you mix in clear to tint it

  • @bigchev9999 This depends on the color code. The color code will give you the amount if you are trying to match a color. If you are just doing a custom paint job, you may just look into candy colors. Other than that just experiment a little with the amount and how many coat are applied to get the desired look.

  • Hi man. Sorry the question. What´s the color code of the mustang paint ? is a ppg paint ? thanks

    regards,

  • @cristolucero Not a problem, I don't mind any questions. I think the paint code was E9, which is the OEM code. We used PPG, but that code should work for all paint brands. Thanks for watching and le me know if you have any other questions. Thanks, Donnie

  • What Gun are you using?

  • @dropkneeage In this video we are using the Iwata Extreme with a 1.3 tip for all 3 stages. It works great.! For more spraying tips you can visit CollisionBlast(dot)com/Iwata Thanks for watching.

  • hi guys great video...questions here. how many coats of paint and clear would you recommend on a dark metalic blue? should I do 50% over lap? and what brand paint and clear should I get?

  • @o0Sp3cia1K0o Hi, thanks for watching our videos. You want to spray base coat until you achieve hiding. In other words, just enough to fully cover the substrate without being bale to see through any where. 2 to 3 coat usually cover well without any light areas. Two coats should work for clear coat if they are full wet coats. If in doubt, you may want to put a 3rd coat of clear. Yes, solvents use a 50% overlap. We use PPG and Shopline. Shop Line has a new European clear that works great.

  • Question what size cans of each should I buy to paint a car. Primer base and clear. Car is a coupe like a 1995 to 1999 Mitsubishi eclipse.

  • @DALE97DSM It depends on the brand you are using. Generally two quarts should spray a small car. If you do not paint a lot, it may take a little more. 3 quarts would definetely be enough I would think.

  • ...and, I'm amazed by how slow and thick the clear goes on at the end (about 7:40) - if I sprayed that slow, I'd get huge sags and lines of runs! No wonder I have a hard time getting enough clear on for it to flow out; I think this is again a problem with spraygun atomisation but also perhaps low temperatures (typically 10-15 degrees C).

  • @alexshepherd Thanks for watching. We use an Iwata, which does an excellent job of atomizing the material.

  • This is a really impressive video - camera work and commentary is superb, you can actually see the paint going onto the panels. One thing that is amazing to me is just how easily that basecoat covers - huge spray fan, sharp fan edges. No wonder I have so much trouble - largest defined fan I can get is 3" and adequate silver basecoat coverage takes 8-10 coats with a high chance of a run. I have a Devilbiss GTi but it obviously isn't working right (12CFM/35psi). Will study the other link now!

  • hi Donnie, does orange peel primarliy happen with the clearcoat, and you would typically not see orange peel on a base coat?

If you have a car with orange peel (from the factory or a body shop) and you want to level it out yourself, do you need to worry about certain things like how far down you go? thanks

  • i'm not sure if this has been asked yet, but do you sand after each coat? from primer to clear coat?

  • @kmjejsenlf No, once the car has been sanded and in the booth, we did not sand. The only reason you may have to sand is if the paint time passed the window time. For example, in the base coat goes longer than 24 hours, you may want to lightly scuff it. Other than that, there is not need to sand between coats. Thanks for watching. • I notice that you are not using the swivel head bucket. Looks like you guys did not need that on the gun. So, how critical is that? Can hand technique overcome the need for that?

  • @Vfried I am not sure. I have never used one. Does this help?

  • first,i would like to say thanks very much for good explaning,, but after i made the clear coat it looks there is small waves..i mean its not stright like yours..wait your answer..thanks

  • @zeidooon It sounds like you may have heavy orange peel. You may try increasing your air pressure a little.

  • ?which sice of spray gun is that

  • @zeidooon We use a 1.3 for base coat, mid coat and clear coat. Some prefer a 1.4 for clear coat. You can learn more about spray gun size, techniques, etc. at CollisionBlast(dot)com/iwata Thanks for watching.

  • Nice job on the Mustang

  • @1aauto Thanks for watching!

  • can i just use the base coat pearl, and clear it? no mid coat.

  • @robertdeuce Yes, you can add pearl to your basecoat. Many of the colors from the factory have pearl in the paint. However, if it is a tri-coat from the factory and you are trying to match it, you should follow the paint recommendations.

  • how many coats of mid coat would you suggest for a long beach blue pearl? you said the more coats you spray the different the color gets. i dont wanna mess up the color. please reply. love your vids btw

  • @robertdeuce This is something you want to test first. I would get some small test panels 9x10 is probably big enough. Spray 3 or 4 of them with base coat. The use (pearl) 1 coat on the first one, 2 coats on the 2nd one, 3 coats on the 3rd one and 4 coats. Then clear all panel. Once dry take them out side and see which one you like the best. Thanks for watching.

  • Looking Great! What spray gun is that?

    Thanks

    J

  • @Sleepy56chevy The gun in this video is an Iwata. You can learn more about Iwata's at CollisionBlast(dot)com/Iwata

  • They can be in a number of places. All Fords place theirs on the driver side door. Others makers may be under the spare tire cover in the trunk, glove box, console. What kind of car do you have?

  • Where do I usually find the car body color code for cars? I've lost my manual, unfortunate.

  • Title text here

  • im going to job corps to learn how to do this

  • @THE6PLAYER9 Awesome...Good Luck On Your Training. Be sure to visit Collision Blast and share it with your class mates. A lot of good resources and training there for you.

  • @ButlerCollision alright thanks man

  • @ButlerCollision What presure do you paint? I paint at 40 to 45, and after clear do you use a tri coat or something? thanks!

  • @manuelagrasrodriguez - I use an Iwata spray gun and only use 20-22 psi. I have notived that too much air pressure will cause too much overspray and land back onto the surface causing a dry effect. The tri-coat or mid coat is applied before the clear coat. The clear should be the last product you apply.

  • @ButlerCollision Thanks you!!!

  • @manuelagrasrodriguez You're Welcome!

  • @ButlerCollision WOw I see the difference now hahahah Now I can see my face clear! I love youtube and you vids, add to fav+like !~ :)

  • @ButlerCollision Nice I just learning now.. to set up the gun the trigger must be pressed at the time for chaking the air pressure right? because I used 22 psi of presure with trigger pressed.

  • how much paint was used to do the whole car, looks like you only used 1 full cup per coat? but then again didnt get to see any changeovers.. also, what do you think of eastwood companies concours guns if you have ever heard of them?

  • @Munky332 This may depend on the paint brand used. A car will take 2 to 3 quarts depending on the size of car. (this is unreduced) As far as the paint gun, I do not know much about that gun. Iwata or SATA work good.

  • @ButlerCollision i would hope they work good, they're 600$+ guns. if they didnt work good i'd say you got gypped. lol. unfortunately the every day hobby guy has many many other things to spend that money on, so for me, its a toss up between the eastwood guns and devilbiss. eastwoods guns have lower CFM requirements.

  • @Munky332 I understand what you are saying. I am familiar with DeVilbiss. We have used one for priming, but they cave tips for base coat too. In fact I wrote a amazon review about this gun. You can read the review about this gun at CollisionBlast(dot)com/DeVilbiss The eastward gun probably works good too, I just have never used one.

  • @ButlerCollision outstanding. thanks. i would assume that the eastwood gun is mostly like the devilbiss. they say in their own video they essentially took all the features of known guns and made their own, for the hobby user. which means to me, they stole the devilbiss design, and lowered the CFM rating. maybe even threw on some other features from other guns. its good to have reviews from guys like you, who understand the hobbiest mindset. thanks. i'll review eastwood if i get it.

  • would you recommend doing practice runs with sanding and painting like other videos on pieces of metal or just going straight in to paint. reason im asking is cuz i need a repaint on my 73 riviera

  • @mynamesnick1 Yes, I think it is a good idea to do practice painting before painting your car. This will give you a feel for the gun. Thanks for watching.

  • Nice, awesome work!!!

  • Be sure to click the link in the description to learn more about paint gun adjustments and spraying techniques. Thanks For Watching!

  • orange air cap or chome air cap? what the defference....

  • @elrob502 The orange is a 1.3, which can be used for base coat or clear coat. The silver is a 1.4, which is designed specifically for clear coat. Thanks for watching!

  • i am going to a technical school for high school and this is what i hope to learn for a career. Thanks for showing how the painting is done.

  • @MsAutobodyman Thanks!

  • Hi, can you please list the paint coat and clear coat stages as bullet points and also how much does it cost to spray one panel altogether, Thank You

  • @FordEscortRS1600 visit TeachMeHow . info I have free training that will give more of the details like that. Thanks for watching.

  • do you guys lay the medium coats of clear so the wet coats stick better.i was always taught to spray 2-3 wet coats which could run really easily

  • @fsca72 we just sprayed a light first light coat to prevent the two full wet coats would not run where the painted stripes were.

  • the iwata looks like its putting down the base down pretty good ..what PSI is it spraying at?

  • i see mottling on tha hood

  • Yes, were are located at the El Dorado Campus.

  • is this the butler community college in kansas?

  • I like the iwatas and devilbiss for base and love the sata rp 3000 digital for clear.has anyone tried the new iwata starnova yet I know its out in europe.every one has different set ups and techniques so each gun is different for everyone happy painting

  • @ZRSKUSTOMPAINTNBODY No I have not tried the new Iwata. I would like to though!

  • @ButlerCollision the new iwatta has the exact same functioning the old one had, but it has different ergonomics and looks more elegant

  • @ButlerCollision Not bad- I still prefer my Sata 3000RP digital (1.3) and 3000HVLP digital (1.4) better though. But I do love my Iwata Kustom airbrushes. BTW, is that E9 Ford Laser Red Met. they are shooting on that Mustang?

  • @CragarShinoda sata is a good gun too. i do not remember the name of the color, but the oem number was e9. It is a factory ford tri-coat. thanks for you feedback!

  • 3m just bought out a company called accuspray. GREAT gun for the money@CragarShinoda

  • @josh863114 Their is a contest at CollisionBlast . com for 3M #Accuspray Contest. Check it out. I like also like the 3M guns that they quit making several years ago. Thanks for watching the video!

  • @ZRSKUSTOMPAINTNBODY I prefer iwata for clear, sata for base and devilbiss is junk lol BUT i got a devilbiss tekna that works well and the Iwata supernova looks bad ass!

  • In my opinion Sata 3000 RP is way better than iwata for clear, much easier to keep a wet edge, and a lot faster then iwata

  • i have worked with iwata, devilbis, and the sata they all have their pros and cons but personally the iwata works best for me

  • After painting with the iwata lph, i'm guessing with the 1.3 orange peel was non existent, did u guys wet sand and with what grit and buff? plus the sata you guys tried was it the sata 3000 ?

  • Hello, nice job!

im curious, What size tip 1.4 or 1.3 and my other question is how come the orange cap used for everything specailly clear? is the orange cap better for clear?

how come you guys didnt use the purple cap?

  • @jeetkunedoground I believe that we are using a 1.3. The ring is the one that came with the gun when we purchased it. It is an Iwata JP 400 1.3 After testing it, we found it to work excellent for base coat and clear coat. On the clear we adjust the fluid needle to allow full fluid and narrow the pattern slightly. We had the same experience with Sata, we only used 1.3.

  • @ButlerCollision An experience painter may prefer a 1.4, but it pour it on a little heavy for students. We recently purchased the gun and I do not know a whole lot about Iwata. However, they work well.

I am not familiar with the purple.....should I give it a try? Do you like it better?

  • We used to use SATA, but we purchased an Iwata LP 400 with a 1.3 tip and love it. We all like it better than the Sata's. The Iwata is what we are using in this video.

  • what type of gun is he using?

  • ohhh well, iv'e painted my car, done my research, not done but hey im 16yrs old, im pretty sure ill learn in college, fix mistakes which are pretty minor, this channel doe's teach me something, at least i didin't paint my dad's truck =D
