you have it exactly the opposite. she's a great writer but doesn't have a great voice. but who cares about the voice (think bob dylan & neil young) when you can write. songs like 'the divorce song', 'fuck and run', 'ant in alaska' and 'headache' are fantastic. there are many others. exile in guyville is and deserves to be on many "greatest albums of all-time" lists....
She is a really bad lyricist, but her voice is incredible. I've never heard anything like it. That's why she will always have her own category, above Vanessa Carlton/Sheryl Crow/ and all the other poppy women of modern music. Dare I say it, she is the only one there. I'm not going to lie, her sexual appeal and enigmatic persona are a big reason she gets so much attention. However, I refuse to let this overshadow her wonderful voice.
