For update for fellow did video are been for years now i found a 1968-69 one at a refurbs. place sales fellow redid paint new motor clutch n runs like new as was bought.....very nice he sales them for 300 dollars...
This washer brings back so many memories of my childhood. My grandmother had one almost exactly like this. i used to love watching it run. I remember though that the little holes in the filter-flo basket became clogged from her putting the detergent in it at the start of the cycle. During agitation, the water would flow up and over the filter-flo basket instead of being dispersed in the tiny holes at the bottom of the basket.
My mother had a 1978 Whirpool for a couple of years, then around 81 or so my dad bought from her because she moved and couldnt use them where she was at. My father had a old Kenmore that looked to be from the late 50's or early 60's at our cabin in Crestline Ca. When we sold it, it was still working just fine. Wonder if they still use it? Wish I had it. They dont want large appliances to last anymore. They make them cheaper, with the precise timeline in mind for them to break and be replaced.
@packardnut That's no lie. We had one of these old GE's when I was a kid, I think ours was a 1981 or 1982 model. It had the mini basket and filter-flo. It was an awesome washing machine and I loved it.
I agree with you, the new washers of today aren't half the machines the old ones were, and they don't interest me like the old ones do.
Why they can't make appliances like this today, I don't understand. I say bring back the chrome, style and quality!
@Gaygarious I'm with you, I wish they would bring these back, also. I loved the older GE washing machines like this one in the video. They had quality and style and were built to last. A lot of this new stuff they make today isn't worth hauling home.
that machine is in exceptional mechanical order! most of those had a lot of transmission and motor bearing noise in them.. esp during high speed spin.. we had the same machine as a kid only in a 2 speed model... only difference I remember is when ours was set for high speed agitate.. it would first start in slow then after a few seconds shift to high speed.. also seemed to jump up to full spin speed a little faster than yours.. but then i was a little kid and our machine was almost new
I agree with PWC except for one thing: these machines "ate socks" and clogged the pump so often I wouldnt be a bit suprised if thats where the expression came from. From my experience the most reliable GE automatic washers ever made were the ones with the one speed clutch and two port pump. I'll bet there are still a bunch of em out there in service
GE washers with filter flo and mini wash were the best ever. Too bad such a great combination was discontinued. I wish I could go back in time and get another GE washer with those features! I had one for years and years, and that way all the lint didn't go down the drain, and eventually clog it.
@peeweecee If I could go back in time, I'd buy up all of the older GE washers, too. I don't know why they discontinued these. I loved the filter flo GE washers, my mom had one as a kid and I was fascinated by it.
I owned this washer (in white) and dearly loved it. Left it in a place I sold. I agree with others; they should've kept this design. I actually owned a later version of this same one for over 10 years. Great machines. LOVED the Filter-Flo, LOVED the mini-basket!
@johnr556 Why they did away with these older design GE washers is beyond me. I loved them, too. I was fascinated by my mom's old GE filter flo washer.
I miss my mom's 1980s GE filter folw waher I grew up watching that wahser be used it never needed repair at all. I remember being very noisy specially when it comes to a stop I will buy one used filter flo washer I own a whirpool from the 80s
but all in all ge still makes the best washer around(the old ones that is)they go and go with out fail like a maytag needless to say they dont make them like that anymore!!!
if only GE where *smart* they would have kept this design and just incorporated some new designs and super capacity they would have stayed just as good as this washer! its how old? and its still running! all of my friends still have there 77-80ish filter flo's!!!!
That is the Jet-Swirl fabric softener dispenser. Notice when the spinning stops no softener deposits onto the clothes. It is rinsed gradually into the water when the filter flo water splashes up against it. Pretty cool idea.
Tuthill, I will do a video of the 3 different speeds once I get a part to repair the transmission with. Right now I only have medium and normal. I want to do it with all 3 if possible
Switching speeds PERIOD (regardless of whether it's in spin or agitation) ruins the clutch. The end result is the machine operating on only one speed, either Normal or Gentle. If you know how to operate these machines PROPERLY, and turn the machine off before switching speeds, there won't be a problem.

Boy, they sure dont make machines like this anymore. New ones are pure junk. These really are quiet too. Take care of this machine.

Why don't the manufacturers re-evaluate some of the "old" mechanisms and bring them back?

it seems like the water level wasn't as high on the rinse cycle as it was on the wash cycle.

Looks good runnin needs a paint job of green in spots......other wise very nice flowin

Hey, what's the spin RPM on this machine? Looks pretty fast, faster than a Whirlpool/Kenmore, but can't really tell by how much.

lol it was a joke... i'm not totally sure but i think if you switch speeds while it is spinning you ruin the tranny. but IDK
great vid btw

You're right. It's quite enjoyable...
but... is... this a video of a washing machine I just watched?
joertjoert 3 years ago
could you show us it alternating between the two speeds on the spin cycle?
Tuthill99 3 years ago
I plan on doing an edited video with all speeds once I get it working. Obviously, yes, you will ruin a clutch switching it during a cycle. :-)
