heard that some guy from drum island is accusing röyksopp of stealing this track and releasing it under the name "a higher place". the tracks sound quite alike but i don't think röyksopp guys would do something like that knowing that this would come up eventually. any info about this issue??
It's Torbjørn's old band mate Rune Lindbæk. They both share writing credits for 'Lift'. Röyksopp used the same vocal sample for 'A Higher Place', but to my ears, that's where the similarities end. Rune wants writing credits for 'A Higher Place'. I, personally, don't think he has much of a case.
Both songs also sample a Jarre track, but again, I'm not sure how Rune would need song writing credits based on samples from other songs that Röyksopp have already cleared from the original artists.
@mushroomsmokev2 i heard that there was a 10 page article in a newspaper about this. what is wrong with the norwegian media?? it seems like they're trying to stab röyksopp in the back.
@BCE86 Basically, Rune Lindbæk had nothing to do with the creative process of this song, but he's trying to claim rights he doesn't have. The sounds used in both songs were sampled by Svein Berge and Gaute Barlindhaug when they were in another band with Torbjørn Brundtland, called "Aedena Cycle", before they even knew Rune Lindbæk.
You have to keep in mind samples and sampling are including in what's considered composition these days.
IMO i can hear the heavy influence of LIFT within Higher Place let alone using the exact same samples Drum Island used to begin with. To the extent that you can contend that Higher Place is similiar enough to be a remix of LIFT. Considering that some remixes are further removed from the original then these two purportedly "completely different" songs. Rune deserves his due.
as mushroomsmoke mentioned, drum island sampled jean michel jarre's woolloomooloo in the first place and if röyksopp guys were ever to pay royalties that must be paid to jarre. the songs sound quite alike but wasn't torbjorn a part of the duo drum island with rune which would means that they produced the track together?
we only heard the rune side of the story and we don't even know if drum island paid for royalties to jarre so the best thing would be to let the court decide.

Röyksopp is Norway's biggest musical export. It's a big story over here.

I've been looking for Drum Island CDs, I can't find them anywhere.
One of the sounds in this track sounds like parts of "A Higher Place".
