I haven't seen Gen. McCrystal's remarks, so I won't comment on them directly. I will say that NO active Military personell should be playing in Politics in public. They should be aware of them, and take them into account when dealing with Politicians. The Commander In Chief is (or should be) the ONLY politician that can make Military decisions that affect currrent conflicts. I guess WE have forgotton the mess that Politicians made of Viet Nam. The Prez needs to stand behind his decisions.
McChrystal did not go into politics. he just gave his assessment of the situation and he did it right. really, the situation is not controlled by allies and it's getting worse. by increasing number of troops McChrystal wants to put more areas under american control. i doubt it will work successfully. but getting some local advantages can help to form a government of national unity or so (including taliban).
By giving a "Press Conference", he did take his position into public politics. His remarks may have been factual or opinion. But he should have stayed within the Military "Chain of Command". We really don't need more information being passed on to the terrorists about what we plan. That just gives them a better idea of ways to attack.
obviously, staying within *Chain of Command* for 8 years did not help military in Afganistan. He broke that tradition a bit. but thereby he clearly expressed his concerns about the situation. otherwise, that waste of money situation would last for ages.
WELL, the dixie chicks said the general doesnt know what he is talking about.
