@Zealix - yep, you can hear the toe nails on the floor. It's a hassle but nails should be clipped to where they dog isn't bearing weight on them, but on the pads of their feet. If you can hear them tap when they walk, they're too long.

Corgis sometimes have splayed toes, which can result in long nails that can be heard on the floor even when properly trimmed. Also, some dogs just have longer nail beds so they can't be trimmed that short safely. My corgi Luke is like this.
