I do not want to "bum" you guys' out but this is NOT a vertical takeoff.... it is an evasive manuever practiced with a turn to the right.... sorry, but been there.
@nastasepatrucase Maybe we should just use the Saturn V for all our problems, then. Just have it filled with like 800 AMRAAMS. Nothing could shoot it down since it's a gigantic flying brick, and it could kill every aircraft in the sky in one flight.
The f22 is not getting phased out I hear about this all the time the f22 funding stopped it doesn't mean they are going to scrap it now that be a wast of money if look at the b1 lancer they stopped that then continued it later
BAC Lightning - designed in the 50's could do this, it could also supercruise and intercepted Concorde at full speed and the SR71. Still love the mighty Eagle tho'
The only way the Lightning could intercept the SR71 is if the SR71 is flying rather slowly. Max speed on the F.6, the fastests of the Lightnings was Mach 2.0. The F-104 flew before the Lightning and could fly just as fast as the Concorde too.
@gregrutz I can read just fine. However, I strongly disagree with you. I believe that the F-15 would fare just fine against an F-22 and win most of the time.
@nexus1g I saw a F-15 make a 9 G turn at an air show, the Raptor following it squared off the corners.
The F15 took off and went straight up through the clouds, the F22 went straight up and stopped or did a flip and a flat spin and then flew off. You don't know what a $137,000,000 jet can do.
It made the F15 look like an antique.
The Raptor can take on 5 other planes with no problem, they can't even find him.
@gregrutz Too bad we never use the 22 in combat. You can't call it the world's best fighter when its never seen action. the 15 is undefeated so until a better fighter comes around and beats its 180:0 kill ratio...the 15 reigns supreme
@gregrutz lol get a life? its called the Air Force so nice one. I merely said the 15 has an incredible track record and the 22 is un-proven. You do realize the 22 is getting phased out right? So it will likely never see any combat. 22 is an incredible piece of engineering but you cannot compare it with battle tested aircraft when it hasnt seen a single combat mission.
@WyldeBLSdrummer5 F-22 is not getting phased out.. it was just put into service in 06. And the 22 has been spanking the F-15's in combat exercises like its nobodies business...
@OlderG0ds Actually it's production is cut down just to 180 planes or so. Mainly because of the high maintenance costs and unreliable technology. It's a fancy plane but at the moment it is just a fancy plane, not a practical alternative to the ones USAAF already has. It doesn't matter if it beats F-15s in exercises, the last I heard the F-22 needed 30 hours of maintenance per one hour in flight. That is not just practical for a military plane.
@Streptokokki Lockheed Martin says it's 18 hours of maintenance. And for a stealth jet not even 30 is that bad. You know F-111 had nearly 200 hours needed per 1 hour flown? That's a military plane. Also half the reason it was retired along with the F-14 but still.
F-15 takes 11 hours of maintenance , if Raptor really has gone down to 18 hours then that is extremely good considering the most work is because of the radar absorbent materials.
@Streptokokki a computer pilot is the way to go, imagine 360 degree visual acuity with eyes that can see in the visual spectrum 15-20 miles out and if just one pixel moves your detected. thats just for starters, it can track an infinate number of targets at real time speed doesnt care how many Gs it needs to avoid a missle, can turn into a missle if needed.
I couldn't be an F-15 pilot....I'd have the world's biggest boner the minute I got in the plane and I'd pass out from lack of blood to the brain....

The RAF Lightning STILL holds some time to altitude records over the F15, and the Lighting was a 50`s/60`s child.

This is a vertical climb not a vertical take off.
Only Harrier and now F35 could do that.

@EvilxMerlin Read accounts where lightning intercepted SR71, Lightning's top speed was kept a secret, M2.0? No she'd have reached farther than that.
shredjoe1 11 months ago
@shredjoe1
While it MAY have been kept a secret, the Lightning has been out of service now since 1988. It has no more secrets.
