Dibaba can be really frustrating to watch sometimes. She insists on stalking the leader until the final lap where she suddenly sprints a sub 60 lap to win. I'd love to see her run a 29:30 10k as she undoubtedly could...but the prospect of running half the race on her own means she never will. Shame. She should exploit her talent more.
The cameras caught him saying something to Kosgei and when the media asked him what it was that he had said to Kosgei, Barmasai said that he asked him to slow down in order to let him win his share of the jackpot. Barmasai was excluded from the share of the jackpot for bringing the sport into disrepute. What Defar did was good for her and even more importantly, good for the sport.
On another note, we now have Dibaba, Defar and the small Vivian Cheruiyot.
Defar was perfectly within her rights to win the race. Colluding can be very dangerous and could even lead to disqualification. I am Kenyan and I remember that in 1999, Bernard Barmasai was about to win the golden league jackpot. In the final turn, at just about 150m, he was flying home neck and neck with his countryman Christopher Kosgei "Jogoo" when he asked him to slow down in order to let him (Barmasai) win. Cont........
It is a magnificent race. I go back to watch it time after time. You seem to be irked by the "money lost", but I fell proud to see my country runners not being corrupt by money and staying true to their sportsmanship and competitiveness to seek the ultimate award - recognition and self fulfillment as the best athlete from the rest.
It is such a shame that these two are possibly the greatest female track distance runners ever and they almost barely race each other. That is why track is such a dying sport.
If they raced each other all the time it wouldn't be nearly as interesting as when they do now. In 2007, the single most exciting event at the World Championships was the Mens 100m because it was the only meeting between Powell and Gay. This is the case when Defar and Dibaba race. One non-championship clash a year is probably enough (and probably all the circuit can afford).
Let us give her the benfit of the doubt, probably she did not know that the 124000 jack pot is at stake. Trust me had she known that there is a prize for her she would have let her win the race.
That is hogwash. Defar would not have let Dibaba win a race because of the money at stake. I am a Dibaba fan, but I highly disagree with anyone who criticizes Defar for beating Dibs.
Of course they both knew what was at stake. They have the same manager. But they are athletes and competitors. It would be a sham if Meseret let Tirunesh win. What you saw here (and will see again) is cold blooded competition. It's what makes it exciting.
This has nothing to do with jealousity. Meseret is just honest athlet. Athletics is all about competition and I would have been ashamed of her if she had let her win by running under-capacity. We have to believe in a geniune way of winning.
I can say if the act of Meseret Defar on Tirunesh, who lose the jack-poy,was a good idea,in fact, but that was an amazing race. And Tirunesh had revanged with the world record at 5000m,"stolen" by Defar...so,that's life:)
I had never gotten over this race, nor will I get in the future. That bitch Meseret just spoiled her teamates 1million jackpot win. Meseret didn't win none of the other 5 races, while Teruye did impressively, aiming at the jack pot. Evil bitch.
You have no idea what you're talking about. Meseret is one of the nicest, sweetest, and most endearing people you could ever meet. You should be ashamed of yourself.

No 53 second lap. It was 57+ seconds. Pay closer attention to the clock because it stopped early.

Because they're athletes and they're competitors. They don't make deals to cheapen their sport.
