The track needs to be listened to in its entirety (preferably late at night). I play it every time I complete a long jounrey or task, especially if I wonder if it a wise one to undertake.
" I thought I would singing, but I'm tired, out of breath".
One of the best rock tracks ever written..... did The D maybe make the reference to the greatest song in the world... this is it, not Stairway!!! LIsten to the little 'Tenacious D' chord influence right at the very end!
I understand that Rush isn't too proud of this album because they were smoking a lot of pot and hash while recording it...but so what? Yes' greatest albums were recorded the same way...same with plenty of other truly classic albums from the 70's. This album is indeed a classic!!!

Thanks for breaking this up ... the CD treats it as one long song so you can't just snip it and put it on your computer/iPOD. This is one of my favorite Lifeson solos ... simple but fits the song perfectly.

The Fountain of Lamneth, which I find to be 6 distinctly separate songs rather than part of an epic, is much better than The Necromancer on the A side of the album. Also, there are Secret Moslems in the Noisefolk Regime.
@acebailey60 Exactly! I have never heard them say they hate it. Geddy said "I think we were pretty high when we made a lot of that record" in the RUSH documentary, but nowhere have I seen the word hate...
this song is brilliant like being in a dopey daze floating on a raft in the middle of the calm ocean.i wish this song is so great i just played it like 7 or 8 times in a row surfing the net.
if his voice wasn't like this it just would not be rush you know?? what do you want michel jackson to sing for black sabbath next??it just wouldn't work
@wordupassholes No no rush loved this album when every one else hated it.They called it down the tubes tour because they became openers for other bands.they stayed true to themselves and said no you cant tell us what to write or what kind of music we make.thats how 2112 came out and blew everyone away..your welcome...
@wordupassholes Well, I wouldn't say that Rush hates the record, but he is right in that it's right in the middle of Fountain of Lamneth. That's probably the one reason why they omitted it.
@wordupassholes they don't hate it, but the topics are kind of heavy, and many people just can't get it, but it's an amazing record with extraordinary songs
@TheGuitarist6677 Not entirely true...this song is part of...or a "chapter" out of Fountain of Lamneth...but I think the boys also intended each of those songs to also stand alone as individuals, too. JMHO though!!
I was once on a Whale Watch and this song kept echoing in my head. It was then that I realized how evocative of rolling ocean waves the music was. Rush is fantastic, but this song in particular is magical. It’s not only an appropriate Song-of-the-Ocean, it’s also got Alex Lifeson’s most emotive guitar solo EVER; not his most challenging one to play from a technical standpoint, but the one with the most FEEL. Wow! I have not heard this since my older brother bought this album in 75. To put this record on when he wasn't looking and put the head phones on was an eye-opener for a ten year old. Just finished watching Rush Behind The Lighted Stage. I can't figure out why this album didn't sell well. Oh well. Thanks for posting on youtube.
@MrUtahagen ya i know it they said the record company didnt get this album i was like why the heck not..this is truely a work of art and not to many bands even come close to rushes worst albums
Maybe it's been pointed out but the song is actually Noone at the bridge. I don't know if it's a typo but Webster Dictionary (one of them.. several revival versions have been released by other family members). But it's sort of old britanian low germanic for some spirit of the unknown. Sort of a voice or emotional voice that can not be seen. I think it was webster... I may have read it somewhere else. It was like 30 years ago at some older womans house I was hanging out at. I was like 15.
It has to be the best one overall from the pre '2112' era (though 'Anthem'is right up there too),very well constructed song painting a picture of bleakness and Lifeson's double tracked solo is so perfectly tasteful.
If someone was searching for a gay bar video they might find this video instead and go "man aren't I glad I found this song instead of a video about gay bars"
@wordupassholes You would know where the Gay Bars are ,,,huh? Music is music so I hope you end up in jail with a bunch of gay guys as boyfriends, but you would like that too much....
The first time I listened to this I thought "WTF?" I put the album away for several years, focusing more on their other releases. As I grew older, my appreciation for this album grew more every time I listened. Into the Darkness, and Return of the Prince at the end of the Necromancer is quite simply amazing music.
Funny thing is that this was almost Rush's *last* album. When it came out, nobody "got it", and it sold very poorly. The record company was ready to drop them and told them they'd better produce some hits on the next album. Instead of caving in to the "hit machine", they decided, "If we're going to go down in flames, we're going down on our own terms" and they wrote and recorded 2112. The rest is history.
@jfnunez1973 Agree with you that this is a brilliant and dark piece of work. Not sure it blows away 2112 but for me, the fact that Rush were taking such a huge step forward with this album makes it more interesting in many ways than what would come later. Just like AC/DC's Powerage and Flick of the Switch, albeit for very different reasons, these 'transition' albums produced some of the bands' best music. Great post wordupassholes
@amcnewmanusa 2112 is an awesome album. But for me personally, I love CoS. It's so raw and metallic. 2112 is much more refined. Rush was so far ahead of their time and they played like it. How many bands would have the balls to play music the way they wanted rather than listening to the suits at the record companies? Not many. That's why I love this band. A "f*#& you, we're playing our kind of music" attitude is what wins die hard fans like me.
@jfnunez1973 You'll get no argument here. I love the fact that, after the reception CoS got from the critics, the easy thing to do would be cave and write an album the record company wanted. Instead, the guys went back to the studio and wrote another concept piece. And if nothing else, 2112 made CoS more accessible for fans who found Rush later on. Cheers
I remember to the later parts of the 70's playing this in my car and my uneducated passengers asking why I listened to " This music ". Funny how when Permanent Waves came out how they suddenly changed their minds !
First Rush album I bought was this one. Knew nothing about their music until I bought this. Became a huge Rush fan because of this Lp. Geddy's vocals are raw, piercing and awesome on this. And the songs. themselves, are phenomenal.
I will have to agree completly, we can always relate so easily to the bands that we love... music seems to have this property to brings up such a strong connection between it's essence and us and Rush are probably one of the best at this. Their lyrics are so pure, so sincere, you get this feeling inside of you that tells you it comes from the heart and I can relate to The Fountain of Lamneth so much as well, it's incredible. :O I agree, I think critics just been blinded by it's excellence ;)
I think one of the aspects of Rush I like best are the lyrics. I can always relate to them in one way or another and I can relate to every single part of Lamneth, it amazes me. Caress of Steel might have tanked but I think it's a masterpiece.
First RUSH tune I learned. Fantastic album still inspiring !! Art in music, almost unheard of in todays music scene !!!!

As I grew older, my appreciation for this album grew more every time I listened. Into the Darkness, and Return of the Prince at the end of the Necromancer is quite simply amazing music.

Thanks for posting. I love this song, and the album. I'm not sure why a lot of people rate it low.

If I had to choose one band to listen to for the rest of my life it would be Rush.

Brilliant album, brilliant band

YetAnotherMovie89 1 year ago
I think one of the aspects of Rush I like best are the lyrics. I can always relate to them in one way or another and I can relate to every single part of Lamneth, it amazes me. Caress of Steel might have tanked but I think it's a masterpiece.
