Kinda sucks that the C5M's aren't using the TF39 engines. They had such an awsome sound. The C5M's sounds like generic plane with no personality. With the old TF39 engines, you know it's a C5 when you hear it comming in from 3 miles out.
@Astromchaser I completely agree. Although they rarely came around the city I live in, I always knew when one was around. I'd stand outside and watch it and listen to those engines. I'd then get over to the airport to see it parked there and hope I'd get to see it take off to hear them again. I hope they haven't converted all of them yet. They should leave a few for us enthusiasts.
@StrongEnough78 Aside from them making C5M's, they will be converting remaining C5B's and C5C's to C5M's. The C5A's however are NOT getting thoes shitty sounding new engines, they will receive only the avionics upgrades so they'll still have the old sound but they're also going to be the very first ones to retire. I'm really going to miss the old sound once all the C5A's are retired, and C5B's and C5C's are all converted to C5M's.
@DBMarlin Yeah, I still refer to it as McChord AFB though, I've lived near the base well before the base merging happened. It'll always be McChord AFB to me.
@DarkestHourRock I feel the same way, for 26 years of my career it was McChord Air Force Base and now it's just McChord "Army Air" Field on Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
Yet, nobody cares if you say "Ft Lewis" when talking about the US Army side of the Base, but you get all kinds of BS if you say "McChord AFB" instead of "McChord Field" when talking about the USAF part of the Base.
It should also say the Twilight of "Old Thinking" using 20 year old derated CF6-80C2 engines and pawning them off as "New". The C5 would have been an equal performer with the C-17 of they had used the GE-90 engines I recommended to the USAF back in 1999.
