Maybe it's not the best cover, but you can see they're having a great time and for me it's enough. Music it's not only doing things perfect, it's also about having fun
I bought this in 1987. A year late. Tom shows just how hard it is to play. A complex song. Then, a chart full of showbiz, and other good musicians. This was magic. A pretty hard cover to do right. Marr layered the sound, with the producer. Especially hard to make, even harder to cover.
Radiohead is my favorite band next to The Beatles, I guess the Smiths are next. Radiohead lacks two things: Morrissey's timbre and Marr's guitar strumming. Both are unique, Radiohead might be an overall better band, but they lack those 2 magic things.
There is a reason why "The Smiths" are "The Smiths". That reason has a name. Johnny Marr. Without Marr, all covers of "The Smiths" are just attempts to copy something without equal .-
Good cover but you cant compare to The Smiths! Please have a look at my channel and and let me know what you think to my original songs and covers x JA x DiscoKiss
Its a cover, a great cover and a fantastic tribute from Radiohead to one their influences on their own music! I think it's important that bands continue to play songs from bands that inspired them, allows a lot of the new generations to start looking at all the great bands in the past.
The Smiths' original was mournful, reflective, elegant, and majestic. Yorke manages to take the same song, and make it sound bitter, vicious, and vindictive.
@ToneGarvey The words, yes; not the way Morrissey delivered them, though - it more sounded to me was like he was reflectively grieving his childhood. Yorke, in contrast, sounds like he's planning to kick the head in of his old teachers, and enjoy watching them gurgle on the ground.
What a horrible muddy/dead guitar effect. Yorke doesn't enunciate the wonderful lyrics clearly enough - ruins the cover. Not a patch on the original although I'm a huge fan of both bands.
Not as good as the original (less range) but I suppose if you were a Radiohead fan (which I am not, I've tried but I just don't "feel" them) I guess you would like this.
I love The Smiths, but, I had to vote down the top comment. Radiohead is far superior to anything The Smiths ever did. (sorry to say...I love them both).
Not to deny the obvious greatness of Yorke, but "one Thome Yorke = 3 Morrissey" is the most laughable statement I have ever read on a YouTube comment section ... An that's saying a lot.
@thecooltactition81 They're very different... Radiohead and The Smiths are my favourite bands, I probably like Radiohead more but that's very difficult to say - I like them in very different ways since they make very different music and have very different agendas. The ways in which I love Thom and the ways in which I love Morrissey are so different it's impossible to make quantifying statements like "one Thome Yorke = 3 Morrissey" :/
I saw an interview with Johnny Marr where he said Producer Stephen Street layered up to 15 of his guitar parts on top of one another on many tracks. Even Marr himself couldn't reproduce that live, so any comparison of this performance to Marr's studio recordings are invalid. Both Bands are great. End of.
It's not a contest folks. It's a labour of love. A tribute to a band that lent Radiohead some of their flavour. The very idea that Greenwood/Yorke even know this song by Marr/ Morrisey is a testament to the long, flowing tradition of british avant garde rock. Kudos!
@kileblade They're quite different guitarists. Marr is all about the complex, clean riffs, whereas Jonny loves to hammer his guitar and produces a punchier sound.
I also like Rowland S. Howard from 'The Birthday Party' and Russell Lissack from 'Bloc Party'.
@RussellThePumpkin I'm also a big fan of Lissack, you can really hear bands like the Smiths and Radiohead coming through in his playing, but he still keeps it original and fresh.
Thom Yorke is so very talented and employs so much in his craft, but Morrissey is the better singer. As for best lyricist is a dead heat, i think ? There again could Morrissey sing Creep or No Surprises ? hmmm ?
@SiberianTrapsReeves LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL No comments.
Didn't he get the lyrics wrong at the beginning 'defy life as a bad mistake' is at the end correct? and the beginning is 'defy education as a bad mistake'.
nope, this is from an earlier webcast in november 2007 titled 'thumbs down' (they also covered new order's 'ceremony', which should be in the 'related videos' column at right)
I don't like Radiohead, fucking love The Smiths but have to admit that was an absolutely brilliant cover almost impossible to cover the smiths well but fair play them they did it very well.
@adiosboss guess You are a big fun of the Smiths, and I like that :) but I think, you would't say what you 've said if you knew radiohead as well as the smiths :)
@SilvioZappaStratos I don't know about 'so much' better... I mean either way, it's gotta be close. I'd personally say Marr edges it. It's just because he pretty much invented a style of guitar playing and showed another side to its importance in rock music... and no-one has come near to replicating it. Greenwood's unbelievable, but I find Marr impossibly hard to better. Then again, generally (not in terms of guitar skill), Greenwood's probably got the upper hand (because of the ondes etc).
So I just picked up a short biography of radiohead at the library as I've always been interested in their story and beginnings (moderate fan since highschool). I also just purchased Meat Is Murder last night and fell in love with it (been loving the Smiths for about 3 years now, this is now my most beloved album). I love this song especially, so I look it up to see if they performed it live and I find this. The 2 major bands in my world for the last 2 days colliding. Thank you!
@Damalycus Thom's voice is very different from Morrissey's. I think he did a great job achieving such a low tone, once he's a crazy ass tenor and morrissey's an authentical crooner.
@FriedChickenofDeath6 that's why i was surprised to see radiohead do this cover, and with some anticipation waited until Tom started to sing. Anyway they do justice to the original in overall.

@TheThespian23 yeah!! Well, like a cross between Julian Casablancas and Morrissey... but then, I reckon without Morrissey there'd be no Casablancas as we know him. To me, if you replaced Phil Selway, Radiohead would sound like a completely different band live. Phil has this kinda stiff (but laid back) feel that really works for their music. And his fills are recognizable too.
@mootbooxle That's very true...Veeeeeeery influential vocalist for modern singers. But yeah, as soon as Thom started singing, I was like "woah..." hahah. And I agree, one of those musicians that don't need to be overly technical, he's just very good at the simple way he plays.
I like Radiohead covering Joy Division....but for me this cover of the Smiths doesn't quite work. I do find it interesting though...and love when good bands cover other good bands.
They can't play the tune and that muppet Yorke just about edges them on the vocals - what a annoying little c*nt he is - what the f*ck does he look like!
