  • The drummer looks like he is struggling or concentrating really really hard on that repetitive beat.

  • @maccantuono I wouldnt say "Masterpiece" i would say that this version has the energy and lacka the tension that the other has,Id say that "this night has opened my eyes" or even "Asleep" was more of there hidden masterpieces, but its your opinion and i respect it,at least your no damn idiot that has chosen "charming man" or "heaven knows im miserable now" as theyre masterpiece song, what instrument you play man?

  • Bloody brilliant!!!

  • Yup.

  • Are you crazy?

  • Maybe it's not the best cover, but you can see they're having a great time and for me it's enough. Music it's not only doing things perfect, it's also about having fun

  • the smiths = best band of all time

radiohead = good band but overrated

  • One of the guitars is super out of tune.

But the version is really good! Thom seem s to be having the best of times!

  • My favourite video on YouTube

  • This version is just fantastic!

  • I bought this in 1987. A year late. Tom shows just how hard it is to play. A complex song. Then, a chart full of showbiz, and other good musicians. This was magic. A pretty hard cover to do right. Marr layered the sound, with the producer. Especially hard to make, even harder to cover.

  • Im a huge smiths fan but i have to say this cover of the song is much better than the original

  • @AtheistSummer

"this cover of the song is much better than the original" ?????!!!!!!! what????!!! oh my god !!

  • @maccantuono well i dont know if you listen to alot of music but there is such a thing as a bad cover of a song

  • @AtheistSummer

the smiths song is a MASTERPIECE. this version of radiohead is not bad

anyway i listen many many music and i am also musician..........

  • The best Smiths cover. Ever.

  • THE SMITHS RULES

  • is it just me or when the guy in the pink shirt comes in doesn't look like it just randomly cut to some teenager playing guitar in his room? lol

  • Radiohead doesn't cover songs often, but when they do they do a damn good job. Great rendition.

  • @nabilmedrano27 They did Miracle Legion very well. All For The Best live is killer.

  • Love the cover...wish they would try meat is murder (although I am not vegetarian nor vegan)

  • Radiohead is my favorite band next to The Beatles, I guess the Smiths are next. Radiohead lacks two things: Morrissey's timbre and Marr's guitar strumming. Both are unique, Radiohead might be an overall better band, but they lack those 2 magic things.

  • guess that out of tune guitar really bugs 149 people

  • such a great song! please check out my cover :) would mean loads!

  • The only band capable of doing a Smiths cover...?

  • Thom Yorke was born to do this Smiths cover.

  • Good cover but you cant compare to The Smiths! Please have a look at my channel and and let me know what you think to my original songs and covers x JA x DiscoKiss

  • drummer is (wicked, or cool maybe even the shit is a bit old to say fandab) playing drums.

  • Covers are more of a "tribute" to a song that is loved by the band! They did it justice!!! :o)

  • ahh

  • Burberry

  • im drunk and its new years, and im crying inside over how true this song is about boarding school

  • Moz must approve, right?

  • Goosebumps............ thanks :)

  • the smiths more than a band .....a lifestyle

  • The Smiths > Radiohead

It's an ok cover though, nothing special

  • @Blackmilk81 lmao

  • @Blackmilk81 I love The Smiths but seriously shut up. Don't fuck up with Radiohead like that.

  • When I grow up I want to be Radiohead

  • Its a cover, a great cover and a fantastic tribute from Radiohead to one their influences on their own music! I think it's important that bands continue to play songs from bands that inspired them, allows a lot of the new generations to start looking at all the great bands in the past.

  • The Smiths' original was mournful, reflective, elegant, and majestic. Yorke manages to take the same song, and make it sound bitter, vicious, and vindictive.

  • @acoutts "Spineless bastards all" isn't bitter, vicious or vindictive to you?

  • @ToneGarvey The words, yes; not the way Morrissey delivered them, though - it more sounded to me was like he was reflectively grieving his childhood. Yorke, in contrast, sounds like he's planning to kick the head in of his old teachers, and enjoy watching them gurgle on the ground.

  • jonnys playing marrs guitar..the gold les paul is not his

  • What a horrible muddy/dead guitar effect. Yorke doesn't enunciate the wonderful lyrics clearly enough - ruins the cover. Not a patch on the original although I'm a huge fan of both bands.

  • Radiohead smithead

  • so THATS what it sounds like with a quality rhythm section.

top version, reinforces a great song but makes you appreciate morrissey and marr all the more.

  • Not as good as the original (less range) but I suppose if you were a Radiohead fan (which I am not, I've tried but I just don't "feel" them) I guess you would like this.

  • disappointingly excellent

    "nape"

  • I love The Smiths, but, I had to vote down the top comment. Radiohead is far superior to anything The Smiths ever did. (sorry to say...I love them both).

  • @fvalen001 I agree, all hysteria about the smiths aside.

  • There are no mistakes in Radiohead. It's all calculated brilliance.

  • only band that has ever successfully covered a smiths song

  • Not to deny the obvious greatness of Yorke, but "one Thome Yorke = 3 Morrissey" is the most laughable statement I have ever read on a YouTube comment section ... An that's saying a lot.

  • @thecooltactition81 They're very different... Radiohead and The Smiths are my favourite bands, I probably like Radiohead more but that's very difficult to say - I like them in very different ways since they make very different music and have very different agendas. The ways in which I love Thom and the ways in which I love Morrissey are so different it's impossible to make quantifying statements like "one Thome Yorke = 3 Morrissey" :/

  • Amazing cover !!

  • johnnny marr, noel gallagher, john squire>johnny greenwood, edge, johnny buckland

    manchester!!!!!

  • @NSAHAI1 You dumb

  • @MrNickMMM Yeh but least he knows good music when he hears it.

  • Excelente!

  • I like this better than the original.

  • certainly do it justice!!!

  • Wonderful wonderful wonderful

  • Favorite song when I was 16(1986). Incredible!!

  • wow!!!...my favourite band Radiohead play my favourite song of Smith! WOW :)

  • jonny has persuaded me to get a gold top les paul

  • Jonny Greenwood is more than a guitarr player , he is a composer

  • 147 people need slapped.

  • It's not a contest folks. It's a labour of love. A tribute to a band that lent Radiohead some of their flavour. The very idea that Greenwood/Yorke even know this song by Marr/ Morrisey is a testament to the long, flowing tradition of british avant garde rock. Kudos!

  • jonny greenwood is very talented, hes not quite marr though i dont beleive. but never the less BOTH AMAZING!

  • @kileblade They're quite different guitarists. Marr is all about the complex, clean riffs, whereas Jonny loves to hammer his guitar and produces a punchier sound.

I also like Rowland S. Howard from 'The Birthday Party' and Russell Lissack from 'Bloc Party'.

  • @RussellThePumpkin I'm also a big fan of Lissack, you can really hear bands like the Smiths and Radiohead coming through in his playing, but he still keeps it original and fresh.

  • @cpreston5 If only there were more interesting guitarists out there.

  • Thom Yorke is so very talented and employs so much in his craft, but Morrissey is the better singer. As for best lyricist is a dead heat, i think ? There again could Morrissey sing Creep or No Surprises ? hmmm ?

  • Radiohead & The Smiths my fav bands this is almost perfect xD

  • Johnny Jonny

    Marr Greenwood :P

  • One thome Yorke= 3 morrissey

  • @SiberianTrapsReeves LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL No comments.

  • This was a decent cover, just great. Although I love Radiohead, I adore Morrissey/ The Smiths way more. This is still brilliant.

  • Wow! I'm a Smith's fan from the beginning, never have listened to much Radiohead but this is an incredible version of this song! Almost ethereal.

  • Didn't he get the lyrics wrong at the beginning 'defy life as a bad mistake' is at the end correct? and the beginning is 'defy education as a bad mistake'.

  • @MattDranee i noticed that too....i do the same all the time gigging

  • my favorite band of all times covers one of my favorite songs..

just died and went to heaven

  • Outstanding!

  • johnny marr kicks their ass! and i love radiohead

  • Radiohead > The Smiths

  • 146 morons and counting...

  • THE SMITHS R THE BEST!

  • Wow... I didn't think they could pull it off... But they actually pulled it off REALLY well...

  • I like Thom's Morrissey voice. Good cover all around

  • this is so damn good, i've been listening to it pretty much constantly for half an hour

  • was this filmed during the making of scotch mist??

  • @5kier

nope, this is from an earlier webcast in november 2007 titled 'thumbs down' (they also covered new order's 'ceremony', which should be in the 'related videos' column at right)

  • @abandonedvideos Oh I see. Hahaha Phil is wearing the same shirt in both then! I guess that's his favorite drumming shirt...

  • An amazing cover!

  • Great cover! And Ed O’Brien looks like a younger version of Dr. House :-D...

  • Rare cases beyond the original

  • I don't like Radiohead, fucking love The Smiths but have to admit that was an absolutely brilliant cover almost impossible to cover the smiths well but fair play them they did it very well.

  • @stevebruce13 love em or hate em, nothing touches radiohead's talent

  • I love this song, and I love Radiohead.

  • 3 Radiohead guitarists = (almost) 1 Johnny Marr

  • @adiosboss 1 Thom Yorke > Universe. Your argument is invalid.

  • @adiosboss guess You are a big fun of the Smiths, and I like that :) but I think, you would't say what you 've said if you knew radiohead as well as the smiths :)

  • @adiosboss Morrissey and Johnny Marr make me proud of where I'm from.

  • @adiosboss Absolutely not. I love The Smiths, but Jonny Greenwood is so much better than Johnny Marr.

  • @SilvioZappaStratos I don't know about 'so much' better... I mean either way, it's gotta be close. I'd personally say Marr edges it. It's just because he pretty much invented a style of guitar playing and showed another side to its importance in rock music... and no-one has come near to replicating it. Greenwood's unbelievable, but I find Marr impossibly hard to better. Then again, generally (not in terms of guitar skill), Greenwood's probably got the upper hand (because of the ondes etc).

  • @adiosboss Don't hate.

    APPRECIATE.

  • @adiosboss not quite though.

  • So I just picked up a short biography of radiohead at the library as I've always been interested in their story and beginnings (moderate fan since highschool). I also just purchased Meat Is Murder last night and fell in love with it (been loving the Smiths for about 3 years now, this is now my most beloved album). I love this song especially, so I look it up to see if they performed it live and I find this. The 2 major bands in my world for the last 2 days colliding. Thank you!

  • A great track cooked to perfection, and Radiohead enjoying themselves! what's not to like?

  • One of the best covers for a Smiths song ever! Radiohead really pulled it off with a twist of their own.

  • Cover destruidora - Realmente vestiram a canção!

  • amazing cover. Very few bands can pull it off. Great job.

  • top yodeling sir!

  • They played it EXACTLY like the original. So glad they didn't try to make it their own, I hate when bands do that.

  • Dear god... Im not a huge radiohead fan, but this is epic. Marr must love it.

  • Thats a good looking Les Paul!

  • I don't know the original one. But this version is absolutely awesome O.o

  • @Riky94asr The Headmaster Ritual. You MUST listen to it!

  • The same way seeing Jonny's hands curled around a guitar wipes me out for the day.

  • Even the back of his head makes me swoon.

  • Radiohead, featuring House on guitar and Young Frankenstein on drums.

  • instremental is awesome, but vocals are off if compared

  • @Damalycus Thom's voice is very different from Morrissey's. I think he did a great job achieving such a low tone, once he's a crazy ass tenor and morrissey's an authentical crooner.

  • @FriedChickenofDeath6 that's why i was surprised to see radiohead do this cover, and with some anticipation waited until Tom started to sing. Anyway they do justice to the original in overall.

You're being right in all points, of course.

  • @Damalycus (:

  • @Damalycus Agreed. Good call.

  • I wonder if they used the same tab I used to play this song. :')

  • Is it just me or is the guitar a bit out of tune?

  • thom yorke for lead singer of radiohead in 2012!!

  • Tight as fook!

  • Good lord, these fellas are enjoying playing this track, wish i could!

  • YOU SYMBOLIZE HOPE

  • 4:12 "Morrisey's taken over Thom!"

  • Sheer genius both versions - 2 of the greatest bands ever

  • Probably the only people on earth that can get away with covering The Smiths without sounding like outright twats.

  • @Mrscuntbucket hah!

  • I love how they make the intro sound like Sonic Youth.

  • More bands should cover The Smiths and Joy Division not becuse they would be necessarily good covers but because it would introduce a new generation to 2 legendary bandsand it keeps the spirit of the music alive.

This cover and The Killers doing shadowplay are 2 of the best examples of good covers.

  • @ThecJc541spec30 Exactly. I got into the Velvet Underground back in the early 80's because, my then, favourite bands covered lots of their songs. So I had to go check out the originals. All part of anyones musical education.

  • YES. How did I miss this?!

  • just as happy to listen to this as the original. Cant help thinking of the intro music to grange hill when I listen to this..............remember the sausage penetration.

  • @poshhammers - That really made me laugh - Pogo Patterson flashed through my mind as soon as I read it!

And why did he leave out the 'spineless bastards' lyric?- the spineless bastard.

  • Thom Yorke doing a Morrissey impression makes me smile.

  • badass

  • they should cover more smiths songs :D

  • they fucking rip this to shreds...so sic!!!love it radiohead as a band and each one individually is so sexy and talented...FUCKING GENIUSES they are

  • love it

  • this is raw, they could've cranked up the bass a bit though

  • Thom sounds insanely like Julian Casablancas in this...

  • @TheThespian23 yeah!! Well, like a cross between Julian Casablancas and Morrissey... but then, I reckon without Morrissey there'd be no Casablancas as we know him. To me, if you replaced Phil Selway, Radiohead would sound like a completely different band live. Phil has this kinda stiff (but laid back) feel that really works for their music. And his fills are recognizable too.

  • @mootbooxle That's very true...Veeeeeeery influential vocalist for modern singers. But yeah, as soon as Thom started singing, I was like "woah..." hahah. And I agree, one of those musicians that don't need to be overly technical, he's just very good at the simple way he plays.

  • I like Radiohead covering Joy Division....but for me this cover of the Smiths doesn't quite work. I do find it interesting though...and love when good bands cover other good bands.

  • @SIRRUBADUBDUB i just wanted to hear how they did this tune,,,i read your comment and was laughing,,just wanted to know what you were saying,,,that all,,,cool bro, later

  • Excellent musically, not really a radiohead fan but sounds good

  • how does anyone sound that good just jammn?...f&%k i envy these incredible bastards!!

  • good cover

  • thegoodteacher(dot)com

  • Dodgy

  • their missing a chord completely, kind of cool to hear Radiohead playing songs like they are mere mortals
