.. I’ve scanned yuotube out of curiosity for different versions of this great piece of music .. even forced myself to listen to Paul Potts’ .. PAINFUL!! .. but Yu Qiang Dai is SUPERB!!
@holkin. I think Ignorant more than racist. You see, Operatic music is so beautiful but the classically ignoramus are intimidated as it is beyond them. Then Paul Potts (also endorsed by another ignoramus named Simon Cowell) came in the lime light and sing Opera arias in an ignoramus way, so therefore the ignoramus adored Paul since he can relate to them the operatic version Paul. They see themselves in Paul singing. Got it?
some works transcend and go beyond the genre altogether. many people who hate opera love this area, like people who dislike classical music in general love prokofiev montagues and Capulets. Quality is unbeatable!
Also for discogirls: When an opera house decides to perform an opera, they design the set, and decide how the opera will be presented. Then they cast singers for every role, often filling each roll with multiple singers. All of this is know as the production, and is performed with the same Set design, and presentation multiple times at one place throughout the year, often with a rotation of singers. My understanding was that Pavarotti tried to sign Calaf, but did not sing all the shows intended.
WOW !!!!!!! Mr. Dai is fabulous. Too bad the ochestra during his Vincero was so loud as it almost drowned out his aria. What a voice. Maybe the Maestro is right. We may be hearing the next best tenor in the world. There are so many great tenors out there and like the Babe of baseball, Pavarotti has set the stage. R.I.P.
Pavarotti attempted Calif once on stage, and couldn't even make it through his designated performances. He bowed out early. He did not have half the voice for a real Calif, so yes it absolutely can be done.
I don't understand, what are we talking about here? Do you mean Pavarotti couldn't perform the part? What happened. Did he not come back on stage or what. He seemed to have a great voice to me. Let us know what you mean. Thanks..
discogirls- I think your query was with regards to my statement, so I will try to answer your question. Pavarotti did not possess the natural characteristics to sing Calaf (the lead part for tenor) on stage as the opera was written. His voice was much more suited to an entirely different rep. No being able to sing Calaf does in NO WAY take away from the legendary quality of his voice. Corelli was a legend who could sign Calaf, but not Tonio like Pavarotti was able too... Different Anatomy.
ma quandi mai,ci sono 5000 imperfezioni , non mantiene le note,ha na pronuncia fisiologica e che non eliminerà mai,non emoziona, ecc...,infatti nessuno lo conosce...
I'm speechless. I'm in no way an opera-enthusiast nor knowledgeble on historical recordings or anything, in fact I'm an ignorant admirer. This version was bloody fucking awesome, the delivery was pure perfection, he didn't falter once on his voice and just... wow.
Thanks! I posted another version by Mr. Dai. It was him live in a concert. He faltered at one place, but his ending is explosive and much better than Pavarotti's version.
I am very impressed by this performance. His voice does indeed seem to have some weight and the performance is not rushed. The only thing I can think of is a slight lack of passion, but this is definitely among the better renditions of this aria I have ever heard.
My mother and I both agree with you on the lack of emotion, he has an amazing voice, but he really doesn't sing it like he's telling the story like it happened to him directly, which is what everyone should strive for when singing opera. in my opinion.
No wonder pavarotti thinks he can be the best, both have too little emotion. :P
I know opinions are opinions, but I think that Pav is the greatest opera singer (regardless of time, vocal part or age) in history. No one touches the heart quite like the maestro.
Oh, you know these people, once they have their ears tuned to one singer, they can't possibly change their taste.
As I before said somewhere, a large part is psychological. If they go in saying, "Oh they will suck compared to Pav," they probably will. People need to open not only their ears, but their minds as well.
I agree completely, I'm so glad I'm open to other tenors- if I wasn't it'd be Lanza, Lanza, Lanza. But instead I have Lanza, Corelli, Bonisolli, Del Monaco, Jan Peerce, Richard Tucker, Josef Schmidt, Alfredo Kraus and so many more.
For him, Pavarotti is the best tenor, but for others, there are other tenors. Maybe that is because everyone interprets and reacts different to a tenor, maybe even experiences the voice in another way.
Thanks! I hope somebody would let Mr. Dai know about this. I thought his Italian is not good. Could you please check my other post? That was his live version.
The reason there's allegedly "no emotion" is because (1) he doesn't have the same underdog story, and (2) YOU CAN'T EVEN SEE HIM. Were people to listen to the Paul Potts rendition under the same conditions, they would not even care.
It is also ridiculous to claim that there is no emotion in this version! You cant even see his face as he sings! People are getting way to carried away! Listen to the notes here, Potts cant hit them nearly as well! He also cant hold the notes as long! His breathing is sub par!!!!!! Its ridiculous that people are making these claims!!!!!
Thanks for your comments. I have Mr. Dai's live recording of this song. But my computer has a problem in making a DVD, so I can not post it on youtube right now. I have been trying to solve my computer problem. Once I figured it out about my the DVD decoding problem, I will post it on the site. Thanks! Paul is definitely an excellent singer as an amatuer. However, he does have some problems. For example, his jaws and mouth should not shake. He may put too much pressure on his throat.
Great voice from this fellow. I only had eard him once in Mezzo channel, but I didn't fixed his name. If he studies hard and harder, I'm sure he will naturally reach the top. Paul Potts folowers: OK, we got your point. There are also people who cry with Britney Spears songs. Every one is entitled with their emotional choice, just don't come here and say this performances are not emotional, because saying that is a total lack of sensitivity.
saying this lacks of emotion is not a lack of sensitivity , it is called "ignorance" pherhaps. they dont understand that just your "voice" is enough to express full emotions!
you may pefer Paul Potts version, but it is a fact that his version is not the better version. With X Factor style sentimentality, the pressure of competition, the sob story of his life etc etc all add to the emotion! FACT IS- HIS VERSION WAS ACTUALLY QUITE POOR TECHNICALLY!EMOTION IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WITH OUT THE STRONG VOICE TO BACK IT UP! PAUL POTTS NUTHUGGERS PLEASE YOUTUBE "FRANCO CORELLI"! IF YOU THINK POTTS IS IN THE SAME LEAGUE THEN YOU ARE COMPLETELY DELUSIONAL!!!!!
technically, quality....but I didn't get "the chills", got them when I listened to Pottsy. Don't know the difference, or the reason, just know that I preferred Paul's rendition
His voice is beautiful. He's not just belting out a performance, you can feel emotion in his singing. This is one of the best renditions of Nessun Dorma I've heard since the first time I was introduced to it by Pavarotti in '92 :)
Well, this man is a professional... Paul Potts is a cell phone seller!!! C'mon, with lots of professionnal practice he would become as great as Yu Qiang Dai!!
You can buy the CD from amazon. There are a lot of positive comments on that web site. I also compared 20 versions of Nessun Dorma by many famous people including those still alive and dead. I found Dai's version is one of the best. In fact, his live concert version is even better especially the ending high B part is so powerful and explosive. I will post it some time in the future.
Thank you for the information, I found the CD on Amazon but they didn't have it in stock, I got it from iTunes instead (even though the quality was low). Do post the live version, I would love to hear it.
