  • Thanks for the comment. The railway was set in Wales as a narrow gauge slate carrying line so small steam locos were the norm. I admit the Shay is a little out of place but it was a scratch build experiment and suited the atmosphere of the layout.

  • fantastic vid . but for some reason i think i would be better with a British loco like for example the class 153

  • What's the locomotive? It looks American outline.

  • @SteamboatWilley - you're correct. It's a Shay in 009 (perhaps nearer HOe) scale with the body scratch built onto a fully operational gear driven Atlas N scale Shay chassis.

  • fantastic!!!!.....i sewar the loco has some sort of sound fitted?!?!

  • @EWS37109 - Thanks for the comment. The sound is from an electronic "chuff" unit with speakers at various places around the layout. As this is a 009 scale loco scratch built on an N gauge Atlas chassis, it was too small to put sound on board and also, the layout is DC not DCC.

  • would you say that this feature was hard to make? cus i was thinking of making something like this for an extended part of my layout.

  • @whitehousefilm

The electronics were bought ready assembled but building the scene required considerable patience. For example, the frames of the gates were drilled to hide and route the laquered wire from the back-to-back SM LEDs used as lamps to the power sourse under the layout and the alignment of the servo drives was critical for smooth operation. It all took about a week of evenings and for me, however, it was worth the effort.

  • Please can you video the "workings" underside. That looks like an interesting project - "Hornby Magazine" are apparently looking to do an article......?

  • Hello waldenhouse - sorry, but there's no point in videoing the "underside" as all that can be seen are the two servos and the wiring. The crossing gates are connected directly to the servos by a wire rod passing through the vertical part of the gate into a plastic tube in line with and joining the servo drive shaft so no motion is visible from below. I'm not a Hornby Magazine reader but if they're looking for contributuions on the subject, I'm happy to co-operate.

  • lovely action on a tine model! Thank you for showing us!

  • Hello Admiral - thanks for the comment. You are too kind.

  • Why not glue a little man to the gates, then it will look like someone is operating them

  • Hi lolmachine27 - good idea and an interesting project to find a way to make his legs work!

  • Like it, 5*

  • Hi ay76 - thanks for the comment.

  • Like the video Doug, will you be showing any more? Cheers Dannie.

  • Hi Dannie - thanks for the comments. I've got an on board video trip round the layout but it needs a lot of work before posting. I'll get round to it one day.
