  • Did Jim just show up for this song and then take off?

  • Like this version.

  • Just so so good.

  • I have a suspicion that if Bob Dylan has heard this, he'll love it as much as the rest of us.

  • Can anyone upload the recording version , please ?

  • awesome job

  • Other than the most amazing voice and songwriting talent. Jim has a big personality, a great warm one and I'm pretty sure he can heal the sick, I got a chance to talk with him when they played in Denmark (long time fan). I hope Jim and the guys will continue to give us more mind soothing songs.

  • @gdamnn DENMARK! :D

  • I could listen to this over and over and over again...and do! Love his voice! Gets under your skin!

  • Is it the original from the Film?... It sounds great!

  • Um CBS?!? What happened to the original??

  • I love Jim James so very much.

  • i first saw these band on the movie Im Not There. What a wonderful band.Ive looked into the band for more songs, and found that they are as good singing there stuff.Everyone needs to look further into them

  • It takes courage to cover this song and you guys killed it, wow. This is just fantastic!

  • I'm a girl, and I wish I had his voice haha!

  • i love how he's just standing there with his hands in his pocket like "it ain't no thang, i've got an awesome voice. this is easy." haha. he is amazing!!!!

  • any body know where i can find the tabs for this version of the song ? .. the basement tapes version is in a different key , and progression ... i know its probably pretty simple tho ..

  • Jim James is so, so very very good!!! if you like this song check out My Morning Jacket-(his band)- check out songs, Touch me I'm going to scream-part 2,

and Knot Comes Loose, Librarian, great songs!!!!

  • Amazing.

  • this version makes stand up the hair on my arm.

what a depth! there is something mysterious, that i cant catch.

    Magic!

  • I was so moved by this song when I first heard it in the movie. I can't seem to find any other stuff by this band. Anyone know of other stuff by them?

  • @lazonda He's a singer in the band My Morning Jacket.

  • I think Dylan would like this version... Bobby if you're out there watching this someday, hope you're smilin'

  • Oh. My. God. He's. So. Good...

  • jim james is the most beautiful voice, musician, and man to have ever moved my soul and grabbed me from my mediocre musical tastes and blessed me with a fiery burning admiration for good, pure, folk. LOVE YOU JIM JAMES!

  • Sorry Mr. Dylan - Jim James OWNS this song. I get goosebumps every damn time I listen to this.

  • @TheLastNaturalist Bob Dylan's version of this is so well thought out in The Basement Tapes. I like originals better, IMO.

  • @TheLastNaturalist I think that Jim James would disgaree. Dylan will always own this song. It is Dylan's song! I love this cover, though. You should thank Bob Dylan for giving us this unique song. Anybody can cover a song, but only a few great artists can create something as good as this.

  • @TheLastNaturalist That's a bit much...

  • Majestic. Awe-inspiring. A reason to live.

  • for me, he is the best voice i've ever heard in my life.

  • Jim absolutely destroys this song.

The pipes on that guy are astounding.

  • Clearly my favorite, out of all the good songs from "I`m not there". Great song, great movie.

  • Damn that boy's good.

  • very good

  • does Jim James have a MySpace?

  • late 20's. He's from Crestwood, KY...my hometown.

  • He is great...my respect bro!

    We shall meet in Acapulco...

  • BOB DYLANNNNN

  • spectacular

  • Dang, Man's got a voice. If anyone know Jim James's please tell him to come to Flagstaff AZ.

    Ashwoodi!

    I love his music.

  • He sings for a rather large touring band My Morning Jacket

  • i was lucky enough to meet him at a show... hes so down to earth and breathtaking. His voice is like no other, and thats hard to come by these days in music considering everyone is trying to sound like somebody else.

  • awesome

  • I'll say.

  • my god, what a unique and beautiful voice!

MMJ create fantastic music, but i doubt that i would love them so much without jim james and his voice.

  • he's so beautiful!!! does anyone have any idea how old he is?

  • too old for you

  • lol. i hope not...

  • AHAHAHA I LOVE THIS ^^^

  • topppas.!!!! 10/10

  • What a wonderful and gifted man. I expect to see some greater things from him in the future.

  • i always thought Jim James was fat lol but i guess it was just his beard that caught me off guard

  • chicago:

i found these lyrics on the yahoo music page. they are different from bob's :) hope that helps

  • sheer brilliance. amazing. simplicity at it's best.

  • Well actually, the lyrical content is pretty much that of the original. With the exception of a couple words maybe. I own both versions and have owned bob's for years!

  • does anyone else know where to get the real lyrics? all the ones i find are wrong. its def not the same as bob dylans

  • The problem with the lyrics not matching up is that Dylan sings different lyrics on the "official" version on the Basement Tapes than those that he registered with his publishing company. James appears to be using the registered lyrics rather than those on the actual record.

  • absolutely amazing...and im a bob fan...

  • wow

  • This effing rocks!

  • This might be better than the original. I love this!!!! Jim James is so good where as he been all my life.

  • I cant fucking stand how good this is

  • it's rare when a cover is as good as the original, i'm really glad they got jim james to do this. great song.

  • Cuts through the soul, very beautiful

  • very very good

  • Putting some feeling!!!

  • jim has the voice of an angel. hes so perfect that it hurts

  • His voice was made for this song and this octave

  • Jim James is God

  • Jim James is probably the only performer alive who can get away with covering anybody he wants without pissing off the originator's fanbase. Jack White might be able to get away with it, but his voice/singing isn't as appealing or soulful as Jim is. He's like... the pied piper or something.

  • I dunno, some fans can get pretty pissy about anyone covering their favourite bands songs

  • best bob dylan cover ever!

  • i agree. one of the few covers of dylan that really is better than the original

  • dylans music is beyond my time regardless there is something that still attracts me to this song i have to hear this one everyday i can feel him on those notes too

  • one of the greatest jim james has ever done!! its one of my favorites... his voice is so pure.

  • this is one of my fav songs, im glad it has finally gained the recognition it deserves.. not to add Jim James completely nails this cover. Great voice and great inspiration

  • i completely agree with you. one of dylans best songs, definitely the best song off of the basement tapes anyway. and jim james nailed it, so glad that this song is getting out to the masses, for the longest time i thought i was the only one into it

  • God bless the master and all those who tread the path of his great songs. keep them dylan toones comming forever

  • What a voice!!!

  • great!

I got to know jim james only after I saw "I'm not there" .

    this performance is the highest!

  • jim james is so freakin awesome.

  • this is one of the best songs off the Basement Tapes, not to mention my favorite period of Dylan, his voice songwriting were all top-notch

  • this is one of the best songs off the Basement Tapes, not to mention my favorite period of Dylan, his voice songwriting were all top-notch

  • the song is about going to get laid by a hooker...she gives it to him for a song...no more no less...

  • seriously...

it's about weed. acapulco gold. read the lyrics. "Rose Marie gives it to me for a song." "gonna have some fun"

  • Great Job of posting this, great show and this was one of the highlights.

  • word

  • I love this song, I have never heard Dylan's original version though. I don't think it's just a song about a pie...

  • he's talking about the tune off Nashville that's like "blueberry apple cherry pumpkin and plum, call me for dinner baby I'll be there" , title: Country Pie

  • I agree it is not one of Dylan's finest moments, but worst song may be a stretch. Not all of Dylan's songs need to have some sort of deep, philosophical meaning that jumps right out at you. He wrote a whole song about pie. PIE!

  • It's an odd cover. In my opinion this is one of Dylan's worst songs... the songwriting doesn't go anywhere (seriously, it's about eating at a friends' house) and there are a lot of weak rhymes. But Jim James' voice just explodes with beauty on the recording, giving the song a depth the lyrics could never get.

  • In my opinion this song is one of his best.

This one is theatre, not poetry. And Bob masters it like he masters poetry. Beautiful. Great job by Jim James and Calexico! Thanks for uploading this.

  • I also agree that its one of the best of the basement tapes. Love how Rose Marie "gives it to me for a song". Beautiful

  • this is fuckin a-ma-zing! in lamens terms. at 1:43, simply amazing because of how little everything looks. figuratively.

  • this is a treasure. not only is the dylan original a rare forgotten recording, but to have a video of james singing his cover is just priceless. i'll be hanging in suspense to see if he brings it out on tour for my morning jacket's new album in june.

  • I was there, jaja at the Beacon theatre NYC

  • I got this song from 'im not there' movie about bob dylan.. and i love it! Im still young, but i think its growing a new bob dylan fan =) awesome song!

  • the best cover in the 'i'm not there' film.

  • fo' sho

  • mason jennings is pretty close

  • total salad.

  • jim james is

  • is jim jones the band leader in Im not there. i thought his scene is the coolest one.

  • after i saw im not there i had to track this song down. truly great cover. very reminiscent of the band's work at the time.

  • jim james is a god.

    no joke.

  • I can't get enough of this cover! his voice is so powerful...amazing!

  • Jim James' voice is pure magic.

  • that song was perfect in "I'm not there" its one of the few REALLY good songs on the soundtrack, most of them are just like similar covers. This even owns Sonic Youth's version of"I'm not there" and ya theres really great sound too

  • Love the song, love the voice. Makes me happy too!

  • this is awesome... great sound quality... what did you record this with?

  • this makes me happy

  • exquisite

  • this was a really beautiful part in the movie.

  • saw in I'm Not There. Great song.

  • ahh so good i was seating just over to your left! what an amazing night man.
