Ok I'ye done work in studio's before and i recently had the privilege of mixing on a ssl 4000 series and i wanted to blow my brains out trying to figure it out how to mix on it. I did eventually figure out the console, but i want to know the consoles that this guy has mixed on for him to say that a ssl is easy to mix on.
@shibbyshibbywhat why because i think its hard to mix on a ssl. Dude i've been doing this for 3 years sorry if you think i'm not that good. I'm trying to learn this shit so don't hold back say what the fuck you want to say so i can get better as long as it's constructive criticism and you're not going to be an asshole about it like so many other people on youtube
As i read the comments in here about who has a bigger dick, It dawned on me that in ten years, the software solutions will only exponentially improve. Look back ten years from now....we've come a long way baby. In ten more years this massive mixer will be in a trash heap...it's a fact. But why all the ego posturing in here? you guys are turning knobs and pushing buttons and want people to think you're some kind of genius. You work FOR THE ARTISTS. They create. you mix and shut up.
all these idiots talking trash about consoles need to go back to their toy box and keep working on their stupid beats.
You guys have no argument and have never used a Console like this, EVER.. AND all the music you people LOVE were MIXED on one of this. from classical to NOW DAYS HIP HOP.. SO SHUT THE .... (long BLEEP) UP.
@NYSUG yeah bitching about a SSL is dumb but a) how many sessions do you see these days that the desk is used as a glorified playback mixer, almost every mixdown session b) its the fucking people not the gear, a pro tools rig is more than enough.
@Interactivesystems ooohhh hush little baby don't you cry! daddy is gonna buy you a make believe pro tool box.. an over priced Mbox then mix it in the box with Pro tools' destructive audio engine which is always dithering in the background.
All the real studios use their consoles to record and MIX little man! Pro tools is the tape recorder and play back.. But they would do much better if they had NUENDO handling the audio files (@ native 32bit foat with NO dithering going on!)
@NYSUG Im making the obvious point that SSLs arent the investment they used to be, because people are having in the box mixed hits on lower budgets, recording budgets are slashed because of the net. look at SSLs new 16 + 8 channel range. They see how peoples process and the economics has changed, you dont need to mix on desk to have a hit nowdays. Your business would be sucking right now., get with the times or go broke old man.
Listen man! if you can't mess with this board then use your mbox and quite bragging about. Buddy my DAW software cost 4 times your PT9. If you know so much, which is it? I'll give you a hint. They invented the "in the box"
I'm sure you are one of those that think that Pro Tools is the best right?
mmmh! where do you get I'm an old man! LOL aaah right, I said hush little baby don't you cry so you thought I was your daddy right?
@NYSUG Most "real" recording studios have a range of both hardware (consoles, outboard) and software (DAW, plug-ins). There are many effects you can only achieve in the digital domain, e.g. pitch correction, quantisation, lookahead limiting, etc. (with many of these bieng staples of modern recorded music). The computer is not used solely as a digital recorder, it is often the core of the studio. Also, the new version of Pro Tools uses a 48bit floating point mixer.
@NYSUG What are you talking about? The Icon has nothing to do with Pro Tools algorithm for summing audio channels.
Most major recording studios have PT rigs. The majority of practicing engineers use PT, and not many are proficient in Cubase, Record, etc. If a studio were to adopt another DAW it would isolate itself from customers, and lose business. This has happened before.
Whether you like it or not, PT is the most widely used DAW in professional studios (Logic is a distant second)
@Md2802 "What are you talking about? The Icon has nothing to do with Pro Tools algorithm for summing audio channels." MY POINT buddy! its just a controller.. where are you or what are you reading? try not to jump on old corroborations.
I have PT in my Studio too.. don't see what you are talking about.. I have it, I can compare it to others..
SUCKS big time.. and just like in this video its mainly use as a digital recorder.
@NYSUG The price of large format consoles has fallen dramatically in the last 10 years. Meanwhile, more and more DAW software is bieng sold every year. The vast majority of music today is recorded, edited, and mixed using DAWs. It's not Pro Tools that's dying, it's the era of consoles like the 4000s, the 8048s and the 1608s.
Tue SSL consoles are useless nowadays. Why not just do everything in the box with Logic and an Apogee interface. And SSLs never sounded that good anyway, they always color audio with that muddy compression sound.
@jprincehouston Useless? Clearly you've ever heard one in person. Definitely never mixed on a real SSL desk. "muddy compression"? SSL compressors are great, especially the stereo bus compressor that's been used on countless records. Chris Lord Alge, Michael Bruaer, and many other mixers mix on an SSL desk. In fact, the vast majority of hit records of the past 20 years were mixed on an SSL. I've got the Waves SSL bundle and, while it sounds great, doesn't sound like the real deal. Trust me.
Nice video. He mentioned ProTools. Ardour is destined to be THE industry standard for all recording. With its adaptation for Mac, it cinches the deal. But, for me, I will be running a Scully 280-8 with a very simple 1970 Interface Electronics 100 board (if I even use it). Then dump the tape into Ardour. I have tracked 3 instruments with three effects, and effects on the master using only a 900mhz256meg comp. Ardour/Linux is amazing. Try doing that with ProTools. Ardour..check it out.
That's an interesting aspect on digital audio workstations when Shepherd talks about how nowadays we tend to look at the music instead of listening to it... interesting point.
at my school we have the ssl 6000 E with 3 stereo busses as well. Its really fun to use.Though since we are being taught recording we only use one of the busses
@russhurley Watch the vid. Yes he does. He says that this board is so easy to find your way around and use it's like a Fischer Price board. If you can't work on this board, you need to get out of the business!
I disagree with this guy. You can get seriously complicated with the signal flow on an SSL. That's why some people SSL offer functionality over quality (just an old cranky engineer remark on his part maybe?).
I love SSL's though. I hope they keep coming out with large format style in a small format console. They will get it right if they do.
I can make records on a M box with or without ssl plug ins. Though there is nothing like mixing on a real desk. Though I think these consoles are to normal and sound like every thing else. Though its best to know how to use both worlds
Wow. 3 stereo busses! For only $200,000 or so? Think I'll just stick to Cubase5 with its unlimited stereo busses, and SSL software channel strips on each ;-)
You can pick one up for about 50 G . Give it a go , you might surprise yourself . Us stone age guys have used both and like a combination of both. Check some of your plugins ....I bet they have pictures of stoneage gear without sounding anywhere near as good !
not being negative or anything but have you ever had the opportunity to use analog gear? i like Daw's as much as the next guy but to me theres nothing like pushing faders. unless you are using a controller then i can understand... best of both worlds! whats your set up by the way. im running pro tools 7.3 Le with an m box 2 thru m-audio dx4's. Samson co1 and sure sm57 mics and reason 4.0.... very new to reason tho. hope your success continues

there is even new developemnts for legacy products
