Nice musical arrangements by Natalie Merchant and, what a lovely voice. Put on your head set turn off the computer monitor, sit back in your most comfortable chair and float away to another place.
For some reason this has always been my favorite song from "Tigerlily", but wow, the entire album is just brilliant & timeless stuff.........it sounds better now than it did back in 1995, if that's even possible.......
Probably not the smartest thing i've ever done but I recall taking a short drive home to my house after i had been at the local watering hole...I had several beers and a few bourbons and then smoked in the alley next to the bar...On the ride home I was so captivated by this song and I found myself driving 5mph on the road...once the solo hits I am hypnotized every time.
I love Natalie and have since I was introduced to her in 1992. This song makes me kinda sad tho. Her voice is so soulful and heart-wrenching; a good and bad thing all at the same time. Love, love her.
I can't believe she has such a small following, then again most of the best out there do. I've been following her since I was 14, when I first heard and saw her-Much Music had just started(Canadians MTV) and I saw the video for Trouble Me.I've been following her ever since, for 20 years.
Thank you for putting this up for me to find tonight. I really needed this. i have listened to this video at least ten times tonight. I really Needed Natalie tonight. I have this album but i never get to listen to it. I need to say this to her and this is the only place that i can do that so here goes. Thank you Natalie for your music and your smile when you sing it. You have touched my soul so many times and you have done it again tonight.
Just a long shot, but I am trying to learn this song on guitar. Does anyone know if it is conventional tuning? I cant for the life of me learn it, maybe an open or alternate tuning? Thanks
I've played this CD a million times... somehow forgot about it for the last few years, just rediscovered it and I was surprised how very much I still like it. This song in particular brings back some memories, but the whole album is awesome really.
Actually, I thought the song was too minimalist (and slow to start), but now I see that's one of the best aspects
"If I'm on my knees I'm begging now"
This song perfectly describes the ambivalence and desperation we find ourselves in when we know our problems but don't do what's sufficient to combat them. These issues linger causing us to "deal" with them "again...
A lot of stuff you hear on YT is simply a waste of your time. This wonderful piece by Natalie on the other hand is a mood changing event. If you have never heard such fantastic composition, melody, and mind blowing vocal with her band enjoy. You will come out the other end with a different view of Natalie Merchant, something other than what is heard on the radio. Those shorter songs are nice, but where Natalie really excels is in her longer pieces.
One of those timeless songs which pass without your ever noticing that it was eight minutes. The lyrics are transcendental and the music provides the perfect backdrop. Simply magical.

This song was supposed to be in the Tom Hanks movie 'Philadelphia' soundtrack. Unfortunaely the song was eventually cut from it.

A perfect song from a perfect album. The entire CD is astoundingly beautiful, and it just doesn't age. It doesn't get old.
Actually Ophelia has the same qualities, but a little bit different production. Tigerlily is a more raw and Ophelia more lush.

This is possibly one of her best songs ever. Very meaningful and poetic indeed. Natalie I adore you terribly. All my love.

Who cares what 'genre' does she fall into! This music is great no matter how you classify it. So shut up, and enjoy it.
brsmith0898 2 years ago 2
What genre does she happen to sing? I'm still trying to figure it out.
xMelancholyLadyx 2 years ago
folk, or roots music. I would say. All the same she is just brilliant.

Along with "River", my favorite Natalie song by far. When she crys "this may be the time, but I might waste it"...amazing.
